Chapter 1263: Not losing myself Chapter 1263: Not losing myself In less than three seconds, the swarm was upon him.

Each fly unleashed a tiny but extremely intensive devouring power, and collectively, they forged an invisible force field around the swarm capable of swallowing everything in its path.

Cain could feel the pressure as the flies pressed in from all directions simultaneously.

It was as if his scales and blood were ready to burst from his body at any second.

But instead of dread, he simply smiled.

The Eye of Gluttony on his forehead glowed brightly, its scarlet light cutting through the darkness.

The devouring force that emerged from the swarm of flies suddenly froze, suspended in a moment of eerie stillness.

It did not remain in that state for long.

The power of Cain’s Eye of Gluttony exploded outward, unleashing a ripple that inverted the very nature of the force assailing him.

The same energy that had sought to rip him to pieces and consume him now changed its polarity.

The swarm of flies trembled for a second before a palpable sense of terror spread across it.

The devouring power they had used to consume their enemies turned upon them.

In an instant, the flies began to convulse violently.

Their tiny bodies cracked and splintered, exuding wisps of dark energy.

Wings tore from thoraxes, and legs disintegrated into dust.

The air filled with a cacophony of shrill screeches as the swarm was ripped apart, each insect disassembling into its most basic essence.

The air darkened as millions of flies were annihilated simultaneously, their forms unraveling like threads pulled from a tapestry.

Streams of energy and vitality flowed from the disintegrating swarm, converging into a swirling vortex around Cain.

The raw life force was then absorbed into his body, coursing through his veins like liquid fire.  Cain simply smiled throughout the entire process.

The trial would have been incredibly complicated and dangerous for him before the improvements he gained inside the Demon King’s Castle, but now it was a piece of cake.

His understanding of the Oniric Truth of Gluttony and his strengthened soul force were potent enough to immediately figure out the key behind the trial.

He had taken control of the devouring force field, turning it against those that sought to devour him.

After the last of the flies was ripped to pieces and their essence nourished his body and mind, Cain moved forward once more.

He faced the massive maze of convoluted paths, using the Eye of Gluttony to find the right direction.

The scarlet dragon advanced through the tunnels, each step deliberate and assured.

The grotto’s walls pulsed subtly, veins of dark energy weaving intricate patterns that glowed faintly.  Despite the ever-present danger and eerie aura, there was a majestic beauty to the surroundings.  However, Cain was not able to appreciate the majestic environment for long.

After a few hours of flying, he reached a massive chamber deep within the grotto.

The moment he entered, a feeling of utter exhaustion assaulted him.

It was as if every ounce of stamina and energy inside him was being siphoned away, making even concentrating extremely difficult.

Cain clenched his teeth, enduring the exhaustion.

He sharpened his mind and focus, attempting to maintain a clear head.

The dangers were far from over.

The ground and ceiling of the chamber began to tremble before cracking apart.

From these fissures, strange beasts emerged.

They were massive creatures, some hundreds and others even thousands of meters tall.

What truly drew Cain’s attention was the overwhelming amount of vitality and energy within them.

These Life Monsters gazed at Cain with eyes full of hunger and killing intent, but the same could be said for the scarlet dragon.

Without hesitation, and before the Life Monsters could act, Cain flashed toward one of them.

He grabbed a massive lizard-like beast by the neck, his claws digging into its scaled flesh.

Channeling the devouring power, he began to consume its life and energy.

Immediately, the exhaustion that threatened to put Cain into a coma faded.

The energy of the Life Monster flooded his mind and body, revitalizing him.

However, the relief did not last long.

The influx of energy and life was so intense and fast that Cain’s body trembled violently.

He felt as if he were a vessel being overfilled, the excess threatening to burst forth uncontrollably.

He coughed, puking a mouthful of blood, and hastily severed the conduit between himself and the lizard as he attempted to regulate his state.

A sharp light appeared in Cain’s eyes as he understood the reason for the damage.

The life force and energy inside him had reached such an overwhelming level that he was simply not able to contain it.

Absorbing too much, too quickly, had nearly led to his undoing.

Unfortunately, Cain did not have much time to analyze the situation.

The rest of the Life Beasts in the chamber attacked him.

They charged with thunderous steps, the ground shaking beneath their weight.

Claws, teeth, and tails swung at him with lethal intent.

They were not exceedingly strong individually, so Cain was able to dodge them with relative ease, his agility allowing him to weave between their colossal forms.

But not even ten seconds later, the feeling of exhaustion reappeared.

It washed over him like a heavy fog, his limbs feeling weighted and sluggish.

“The chamber is draining my energy, leading to a crippling exhaustion,” Cain realized.

“I can overcome it by consuming the Life Beasts.

However, the influx of life and energy is so intense that it can easily lead to self-harm.” Cain’s eyes glowed with enlightenment as he pieced together the key to advancing through this path.

“It’s all about control,” he thought.

“Devouring others to advance, but not losing myself in the overwhelming surge of life and energy coursing through my soul.” It was easy to lose oneself in the power of gluttony, devouring everything in your path until there was nothing left, becoming a tainted amalgamation of power without a sense of self or ego.
