Chapter 1592: Reverend Madness’ new form
High above a sprawling desert, a colossal and savage battle was unfolding in brutal detail. The focal point of the battlefield was a massive fortress built into the surrounding dunes, channeling the very energy of the environment into a disciplined army of warriors from the Light Races.
Leading the Light Races was a colossal Deus Behemoth named Lucius, a silver-furred wolf-man whose bulging muscles rippled with each movement. He wielded a gigantic sword that glowed with otherworldly radiance as though it could slice straight through the very fabric of space-time.
“Keep fighting!” Lucius roared, launching a sweeping arc of sword energy that sent a group of Divine Transcendence Masters from the opposing side hurtling backward. “Burn them all! Leave no Dark Race pig standing!”
A manic laugh thundered out in response. Its source was a warrior clad in obsidian-black armor, wicked blades protruding from his gauntlets and shoulders. This was Zorcer, the Atrox faction leader who had seized command of Core Elder Karun’s forces. Channeling dark energy into his hands, he conjured two swirling vortexes of destructive power, each brimming with malevolent force.
“Futile! Your resistance is pointless,” Zorcer crowed, unleashing one vortex toward Lucius and another toward the fortress. The first vortex slammed into a leader of the Light Races’s warriors, while the second battered the barrier protecting the castle walls, weakening it considerably.
Despite the home advantage and the empowering energy towers, Lucius’s faction found themselves struggling against the brutal might of Zorcer’s soldiers. The Dark Races had brought more high-level combatants, each more ferocious than the last, and the tide of battle seemed to flow inexorably in their favor.
Yet even in the face of likely defeat, Core Elder Lucius and his forces refused to surrender. Their auras flared with renewed power, their battle cries echoing across the dunes as they clashed again with Zorcer’s warriors.
A single moment of respite was impossible in the chaos that engulfed the desert. Throughout the swirling sands, hundreds of thousands of warriors from Light and Dark Races clashed in a whirling melee of steel, magic, and raw power.
The sky itself bore witness to their fury: radiant blasts of light soared high, streaking across the heavens like falling stars, only to crash into writhing masses of dark energy that dissipated in thunderous explosions. Shockwaves rippled outward in every direction, shaking the castle’s foundations, toppling runic obelisks, and carving deep furrows into the dunes.
Above it all, Lucius’s sword arcs tore through the swirling darkness of Zorcer’s vortexes. The collisions radiated scorching heat and arcs of black electricity that splintered into the castle’s barrier. Broken runes scattered like shards of glass, and terrified defenders scrambled to bolster the fortress’s crumbling defenses. Every second of this bloodbath seemed like an eternity, yet neither side relented.
“BOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM!”
Core Elder Lucius’s sword arc clashed with the vortex of dark energy Zorcer had unleashed. The resulting explosion illuminated the sky in a blinding flare, shattering the clouds and sending shockwaves reverberating hundreds of kilometers across the desert. Both leaders emerged from the light, battered but ready to continue, their expressions twisted with determination and battle frenzy.
They were ready to clash again when a sudden, suffocating aura descended upon the battlefield. It was as if an ancient, indescribable weight settled over the desert, pressing down on everything in its domain. The earth itself trembled, and the scorching winds halted in deference to this overpowering presence.
Every combatant, Light and Dark alike, froze mid-swing or mid-incantation.
Zorcer and Karun exchanged shocked glances, each mind racing with the same question: Could it be Cain Laurifer? But almost as soon as the idea formed, they dismissed it. This aura was far older, far darker than any the young man had ever displayed.
All eyes turned skyward, where the newcomer floated in silent majesty. He was a celestial being, exuding an overwhelmingly powerful presence that set nerves on edge. His towering, hyper-muscular humanoid form was wrapped in an elaborate dark exoskeleton that seamlessly melded with his flesh, blending elegance with menace. His elongated, featureless head radiated mystery, an unsettling visage devoid of mouth or eyes. From his back spread massive, insect-like appendages—a fusion of wings and lethal pincers—that crackled with divine and destructive power.
In his clawed hands, he wielded a colossal weapon that seemed halfway between a staff and a sword. The organic flow of his armor suggested an apex predator prepared to unleash infinite wrath.
An eerie hush fell over the battlefield, for no one dared make a move until they knew whether this newcomer was friend or foe.
Slowly, the creature’s head turned, surveying the fortress, the armies, and the countless dead littering the dunes. When he finally spoke, his voice reverberated like a divine command that made the air itself tremble.
“Children of the Gu Sect,” he intoned, “hear my voice. I…am Reverend Madness.”
A wave of shock washed through the combatants. Everyone had heard the legends of Reverend Madness—the founder of the Gu Sect, rumored to have died over four hundred million years ago.
A tense stillness settled in the air as no one dared contradict the monstrous being floating above them. Finally, the creature’s reverberating voice echoed once more.
“There is no need to fight among yourselves anymore. After all, you will all become part of something far greater.”
What might have sounded like a hopeful promise in another context chilled every heart on the battlefield. An unsettling screech, reminiscent of a colossal insect, reverberated across the desert. It was a signal—one that brought with it immediate and horrifying consequences.
“CHIIIRRRRRRRR!”
The nightmarish sound tore through the silence, and agonized screams soon followed. Every cultivator below the Divine Transcendence Rank felt their Gu Insect suddenly turn against them. With horrifying speed, the insects devoured their hosts from the inside out, causing gruesome deaths in a matter of seconds.
The Divine Transcendence Masters watched in stunned horror as their comrades collapsed, limbs thrashing in the sand until all movement ceased. Yet they themselves were not spared. Their Gu Insects rebelled, too, and it took a lot of their power to keep the creatures from feasting on their flesh as well.
Lucius and Zorcer gritted their teeth, each seizing their forearms to prevent the insects within from tearing them from the inside. Despite the searing pain, the two leaders exchanged glances, seeing each other’s gaze full of terror. Each sensed that the other preferred a chance at survival over an immediate return to their private war.
“Attack that monster!” they roared in unison, their voices echoing across the silent battlefield. “Forget everything else! Kill him now!”
Their combined forces, Light and Dark alike, took flight, focusing all their remaining strength and fear into one final, desperate push. Spells flared anew, and weapons crackled with energy.
