Chapter 1595: Humble servant
The battle reached its zenith as the six faction leaders all poured the entirety of their powers at Reverend Madness, each blow resonating with a fury that would have flattened entire armies.
Yet what they faced was not a man but an ancient monster half a billion years old. Reverend Madness’s martial skills appeared inexhaustible, and his defenses were monstrous. Even the combined efforts of these Peak Divine Transcendence attacks could only dent the dark exoskeleton covering his body. Whenever a single blow came close to penetrating that shell, black tendrils of energy would emerge from beneath it, intercepting or redirecting the incoming power.
On the other hand, every counterattack from Reverend Madness brought catastrophe. Whether by swinging his bizarre weapon and unleashing massive arcs of black starlight or by hurling blasts of demonic energy from his fists, he inflicted staggering casualties.
One arc of that black starlight, crackling with unholy power, could slice through a formation of Divine Transcendence Masters, leaving twisted bodies and shattered armor in its wake. The battlefield was quickly littered with the wounded, dying, and dead. Blood pooled in the craters left behind, and the air grew thick with the coppery tang of death.
Despite the carnage, the six faction leaders refused to yield. They exchanged silent nods, eyes gleaming with grim resolve. No matter how much they hated each other, they loved living more, so Lucius, Azure, and the others fought side by side with everything they had.
Each time Reverend Madness tore through one of their lines, they regrouped, calling upon the power of their towers to heal, bolster, and strike again. Yet, with every exchange, the futility of their situation became more apparent. The monstrous swarm of insectoid creatures kept the Divine Transcendence Masters occupied, preventing the rank-and-file from offering meaningful support. And the six leaders, however formidable, could not seem to force Reverend Madness to even stumble.
Eventually, the grim moment arrived. Reverend Madness battered the Alliance’s front lines once more, bringing them to the brink of collapse. Hope wavered in the eyes of even the mightiest leaders. But just as the situation appeared hopeless, Afira closed her eyes and summoned five obsidian stones from a space ring. Each stone pulsed with a faint, ethereal glow.
Clutching them in trembling hands, Afira poured her essence into the stones, chanting words in a long-forgotten tongue. The stones shattered into dust, and an immense, spectral energy flared around her. Blood trickled from her eyes and nostrils as she pushed her abilities beyond mortal limits, forging a binding spell that spanned the battlefield.
“Soul Sundering Net!” A colossal net of soul energy converged around Reverend Madness, latching onto him with intangible chains.
The effect was immediate. Reverend Madness paused mid-swing, his body surrounded by shifting layers of ephemeral light. He tried to wrench himself free, but a flash of pain contorted his features. For the first time in this entire engagement, the ancient monster was surprised.
Afira’s face was pale, streaked with bloody tears as she poured everything she had into sustaining the spell. She roared with all her might, “Attack now!”
The remaining faction leaders were all astonished by the display of power from the Legio Eldrich woman. Yet they did not waver—this was their chance, perhaps the only one they would ever get.
Lucius, Zorcer, Karun, Olaf, and Lady Azure simultaneously ignited their life force and soul force, causing their auras to flare and their power to surge. While consuming, those forces would have dire consequences for their cultivation and potential; if they did not do it, they would die, so it was not a hard choice.
Lucius and Karun charged forward, swords raised high, their combined energies crackling like thunder, sundering space and nicotinic force merging into a single destructive slash. While Zorcer and Olaf summoned a colossal vortex of darkness, preparing to unleash a point-blank spell into Reverend Madness.
“AHHHHHHH!”
Just as their attacks were about to collide with their target, a pained scream tore through the chaos—yet it did not come from Reverend Madness. Instead, it rang out behind them.
Whirling around, they saw Lady Azure had shifted her aim, releasing the full might of a dimensional rift upon Afira. The Legio Eldrich woman, who had channeled all her strength into her soul-based spell, was left completely exposed. The razor edge of the rift cleaved her body in two before she had a chance to defend herself.
A stunned silence gripped Lucius, Zorcer, Karun, and Olaf. Before they could fully grasp what had happened, Reverend Madness wrenched himself free of the ethereal chains. With a single sweep of his weapon, he unleashed a tidal wave of black, nightmarish starlight. The onslaught struck the four faction leaders with tremendous force, sending them hurtling across the battlefield while they coughed up mouthfuls of blood.
Despite the agony, the four leaders recovered quickly. Glaring at Lady Azure, they felt hot waves of hatred and fury boiling in their chests—but also keen confusion. Why would she betray them at such a critical moment? Reverend Madness seemed equally perplexed as his gaze flicked toward Lady Azure.
The old Anima did not even glance at Lucius and the others, as if they were beneath her notice. Bowing her head to Reverend Madness, she spoke in a calm, measured tone.
“Reverend Madness, please allow me to express my awe at your power. I stand before you as a humble servant.”
The demonic figure regarded Lady Azure for a brief moment, his voice cold and detached when he finally answered. “I will consume every life in this world. Your actions will not spare you from that fate.”
Upon hearing this merciless decree, Lucius, Zorcer, Karun, and Olaf felt a twisted satisfaction bloom—perhaps this treacherous woman would finally taste despair, knowing she had signed her own death warrant. However, instead of terror, Lady Azure simply smiled.
“You may devour my soul and body as you please,” she said softly. “I only ask that you remember my actions when you return to the Gu Sect.”
