- Chapter 148 - Chapter 148 Alice's inner conflict
Chapter 148: Alice’s inner conflict Chapter 148: Alice’s inner conflict Alice let out one last pant, calming herself.
“I’m fine.
I’m fine.
You can put me down now.” She said, brushing her fingers through her hair as she sighed.
“Alright.” Micheal slowly lowered her to the ground, not the one she had destroyed but the other side, and she sat on the floor, folding her legs and arms.
She let out yet another heavy sigh and looked up at them.
But she wasn’t looking at them.
She was looking past them at the reddened sky a few miles away.
She could feel the monstrous and ominous energy coming from it.
She could feel that something big was coming from it.
She peered into the scene with her third eye.
The gate was getting bigger, and the lightning cracks around it were spreading around the area.
Just what kind of monster was it?
She faced the eclipse dragon that came out of it.
But it looked like another big monster was going to fly out.
A monster strengthened by demon blood.
One far superior to the eclipse dragon.
A monster that could destroy the city in seconds.
And of course, Humans were not strong enough to defeat it.
She…
Would have to go there in person.
Alice scratched her head, annoyed and agitated.
She couldn’t even get a minute of break?
Was that it?
She just had it that she couldn’t even live in peace?
She couldn’t follow a sleep timetable either, that was for sure.
Her face contorted as she bit her lip, restlessly grabbing her hair.
Was this what being a hero entailed?
She had to give up her little peace, her sleeping time?
She had to sacrifice her little comfort to be a hero?
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
This was exactly why she didn’t want to become a hero and live by the rules.
So why were these things always dictating her next course of action?
Why couldn’t she…
Do whatever she wanted?
If she ignored this, what next?
The world would fall, wasn’t that right?
And then who would they point fingers at?
Obviously her.
What was the most powerful person doing when the world was getting destroyed?
They would ask and she would say, she was taking her sweet time taking a nap.
That didn’t make sense, did it?
And that was what worried her the most.
She couldn’t even ignore it even if she wanted, thanks to this power that was given to her.
*I understand this is hard on you.* ‘You understand?
Ha!
I don’t think you do Leo.
I don’t think you do.
If you did, then…
If you did then you wouldn’t have placed this huge responsibility on me in the first place.’ she complained, throwing her gaze aside.
‘But I think I’m starting to understand.
I am starting to understand that, yes, I was some lucky awakened in the past, and I might’ve been the last man standing; that’s why I was able to catch your eye, but that was a different me.
In this life, I don’t feel responsible enough to actually want to be responsible and it’s taking a lot out of me.’ *Alice,* “I’m reckless.” She said out loud, and they thought she was talking to them, so they listened closely.
“Reckless and incompetent.
Right now, I might be competent because of these powers given to me, but I don’t think I have the welfare of the people at heart.
I don’t see them as my priority.
I just want to…
Eat, sleep, and feel free.
Is that too much to ask?
But I guess it is because right now, I have been given the power to save lives, and I have to do it.
Isn’t that right?” She sighed and covered her face.
“A forced responsibility.” She muttered.
“I didn’t ask for this.
Any of it.” Her anger was gradually growing into sadness.
She could not exactly tell what she was feeling from these swirling emotions.
First, she was angry that her plans, or rather, her free time, were always cut short by one sort of emergency or the other.
And then angry that this power was given to her when she never asked for it.
This responsibility.
She didn’t want to be a hero.
She didn’t want to save lives and be cheered on.
For crying out loud, she was just a seventeen-year-old girl who just didn’t want to be a dog for the rest of her life.
But yet, when she remembers the lives she saved, when she remembers the tragedies she was able to stop from happening when she remembers that Daine could live…
she feels relieved and then sad.
Why was this responsibility given to someone like her?
Her sadness…
Was it because of the sacrifices she was making to make these things happen?
Or was it because it was all at the expense of her own comfort?
Or rather…
Since she was oblivious.
She didn’t understand.
She felt she wasn’t smart enough to understand.
Did she like saving people?
Avoiding tragedies and stopping destruction?
Yes, she was sure she did.
She enjoyed dominating, being at the top, and doing whatever she wanted.
But that was the problem.
She wasn’t exactly doing whatever she wanted.
She moved when there was danger not because she wanted to but because she knew she was the only one who could stop it.
Because that was what Leo would want her to do with the power he gave her.
So, this kind of thing was like an obligation, right?
That feeling lingered and weighed her heart down.
An obligation was like a chain.
Just when she thought she was free…
Why was she just realizing there was an invisible chain choking her neck?
*Please, don’t think like that.
It’s not a chain, and…* Leo tried desperately to raise these thoughts and feelings from her heart and stop whatever negativity she was feeling, but…
‘Leo,’ she called, She folded her legs, hugged it, and dropped her head on it, exclaiming softly, “I’m tired.” In a world where the rich and powerful ruled, a world where the rich and powerful had it all and the powerful were free to do whatever they wanted, the most powerful person, the teenage girl who had both money and power, felt so miserable on a night she realized…
She wasn’t able to do whatever she wanted after all.
There was no liberation…
Even for the powerful.
