Chapter 179: How did Devon die?
Alice went silent.
She opened her mouth, slowly parting her lips to speak when she felt an urge to throw up.
She covered her mouth and her eyes shook in confusion.
What was that?
Leo watched her and then sighed.
He got up and grabbed Alice by the arm.
“She’ll think it over.
There’s still some time before she gets contacted by the agency, right?” He asked and Devon nodded.
“Well, till then, let her think about it a little longer.
And please, do not be disappointed by her answer.
Believe me, whatever choice she makes from here on out, she takes deep consideration into it.
So, respect her wishes.” Alice followed Leo towards the stairs and though she waved her hand at him, saying she was okay, he shook his head, refusing to heed her words.
“I will wait down here.” Devon suddenly said and Leo rolled his eyes towards him.
“I am in charge of taking Alice to meet the Chairman, so when she is ready, she can come down and we’ll leave right away.” Leo nodded and turned to Alice.
“You hear that?” “I’m not deaf.” She said and glanced over her shoulder at Devon.
The feeling overwhelmed her.
She shook her head and said in a whisper, “Hey, get me up quickly.” Leo heeded her words right away and swept her off her feet.
He dashed up the stairs in a blink of an eye and got to Alice’s room.
As soon as she got there, she went straight to the bathroom and threw up blood.
She raised her head, saw her nose bleeding, and couldn’t help but cuss out in irritation.
“Fuck!” She was having that shunning and overwhelming feeling she often got when Leo told her too much information about the future or if she suddenly recalled a memory.
She cleaned her nose and rinsed her mouth out.
The memory she got of Devon that made her want to throw up at the dining table was scary.
It was quite vague but she could recall the traumatic feeling she got from it.
“Are you okay?” Leo asked and she rolled her eyes to find him leaning on the door frame of her.
“Do I look okay?” She asked, “I’m puking blood while you’re standing at the door, acting like Mr Cool guy.” “Hm, is it my fault that I appear cool to you, no matter how I look?” He asked and that got on her nerves.
Her eyes slanted and she confessed.
“That wasn’t a compliment.” “Oh yeah?” He unfolded his arms and started walking towards her.

“Then what was?” Alice shook her head.
She had other things to be worried about.
She tried to recall the vague memory.
If it had been for some other reason, she might’ve concluded it was irrelevant but this was for Devon.
Leo was about to place his hands on her shoulder and maybe give her a soothing massage when she asked, “How did Devon die?” He paused.
“Did he also die in front of me?
Was he trying to save me?
Or…
Was it a saint sacrifice as well?” “You know about the saint sacrifice?” He asked but she looked at him sternly, waiting for him to answer and not change the topic abruptly.
“Okay, I see how it is.” “What do you see?
Just tell me.
Did he sacrifice himself to give me strength, or did he just die to protect me, who was so weak?” Leo went silent.
He looked at her in the mirror.
She was filled with angst and her heart was racing.
Was it simply fear?
No, it wasn’t that simple.
There was fear but it was the fear that came with oblivion.
Not knowing how a person would die, how they looked when they died, or what they said as their last words.
Alice was feeling angst because she felt that Devon had died in her previous life because of her and to make matters worse…
She felt his death and a strong connection to him asking her to join his guild.
It might’ve been a coincidence that she felt nauseous during that conversation.
But what were the odds that it didn’t really happen?
“Okay, my head is starting to spin.” Alice said and staggered but Leo held her by the shoulder.
“I’m analyzing this thing too deeply.
Just…
Tell me what happened.
I’ve already experienced the penalty so I don’t think it would be a big deal if you told me in detail.” “Or maybe it is.” Leo said.
“Alice, you haven’t even recalled what happened yet you’re already throwing up blood and bleeding from your nose.
If I told you what happened in detail, you’re bound to bleed from your organs.” Alice was listless but she knew there was nothing she could do.
She rested in Leo’s arms and asked just one question, “Then, answer me this, is there a connection to Devon’s death and me joining his guild?” Leo went silent.
The whole point of turning back time was to avoid deaths that could break Alice and also break the world.
Devon was an important figure in facilitating Alice’s growth, but that was in the past.
The Alice right now was growing just fine without having to face loss.
At this point, if someone dear to her died before her very eyes, he did not know what she would feel.
She might just throw down the whole mission to save the world or she might become even more responsible towards human lives.
But whatever it was, he was not ready to test it out.
This was a gamble he could not risk playing for the loss would be disastrous.
“Yes,” Leo said and Alice’s heart thumped.
“He died, and you lived, but it wasn’t because you joined the guild.
It just so happened that all of that took place on the day you decided to join his guild.” He closed his eyes.
“It wasn’t your fault.” Alice gritted her teeth, hating and cussing at a world she was glad she was no longer living in.
That world had died a long time ago and she did not plan to create it again.
No one would have to die in front of her.
At least, none of the people whom she held dear.
She would make sure never to live out the title of her last life, ‘Last Man Standing’, for she planned to stand tall with all her friends.
The world would no longer be the desolate wastelands her previous self survived in.
A lonely place.
“Thank you, Leo,” Alice said, freeing her lips.
“I know what to do now.” Leo nodded and kissed the top of her head.
“Just be careful, okay?
Don’t lose any more blood.” She nodded and smiled faintly.
“Yeah, tell that to the penalty.” She said and laughed.
He laughed softly but he was worried.
