Chapter 183: Did I say something wrong?
Devon had no idea Leo would go with them.
He thought Leo was only going to escort Alice out but then he got in the car with them.
“He’s my familiar,” Alice said, sensing Devon’s questioning gaze.
“So he can’t be too far from me.” “Ah, so does that mean he goes everywhere with you?” Devon asked and Alice darted her eyes aside.
She didn’t even know how far Leo could be from her but she did feel it when he went upstairs to pick up her phone they forgot on the bed.
When he got that far, it was like she could see a string connecting both of them and it was getting thinner the farther Leo got from her.
She tried to touch the thin string but it didn’t have a physical form.
She could only see it with her special third eye.
“So, staying too far from each other could be considered a bad thing.
What happens when the string snaps?” She wondered out loud and Devon wondered what she was talking about.
But before he could ask, Leo returned.
Alice could no longer see the string, even if she tried.
Rather, all she could see was the glowing mass of energy surrounding Leo.
“Well,” Alice said, “…I take him everywhere with me.
But when I go to the bathroom to take my bath, he stands outside and says I need my privacy as a lady.” “You certainly do, Alice.” Devon said and shifted his gaze to Leo who was too busy looking out the window to care for what they had to say about him.
This was his first time in a car so he was going to savor it.
Especially since it was one of the most expensive cars.
The perks of being an Elite in society, “So, what do you plan to get the Chairman?” Devon asked and Alice took out her phone.
“I honestly have no idea.” She said.
“But you could tell me, right?
I mean, you look like you do this sort of thing often.” “What…
Sort of thing?” He asked her.
“You know, take gifts to your grandparents every year.” She said and smiled softly.
“They must be really proud of you and happy that their handsome offspring cares so much about them, humanity, and…” Alice paused, seeing the downturn in Devon’s expression.
He slowly lowered his head, his smile stiffened from trying to keep it up even when she touched a very sensitive topic.
“Oh, uh…” It was starting to get awkward, as she had no idea why he suddenly looked so…
Cold.
Leo rolled his eyes towards Devon and then turned to Alice.

*You seriously have no clue.* He said, causing Alice to become more confused.
What was it?
“Did I…
Did I say something wrong?” She asked, leaning closer to him but he shook his head and said, “You didn’t say anything wrong.
You’re just…” He gripped his hands tightly.
She could hear the latex of his gloves sliding against each other strongly and wondered if he was trying to rip it unconsciously.
Devon raised his head, smiling at her like nothing had happened, and said, “Alice, you and I are in the same boat.” He said.
“So, I’m sorry but I don’t know what the elderly like as gifts either.” Alice’s eyes widened, staring at his smile and realizing the situation.
Leo shook his head and turned his head away, focusing on the view outside the window once more.
“Ah, I…
I had no idea,” She said.
“You were…
You were an orphan.
I made such an insensitive remark and…
I’m sorry, Devon.
I just thought you had everything going well for you.
That’s why you’re able to shine so brightly every day.
I thought you grew up in a loved home with everything you ever needed.” Her face looked like she had been struck by the most horrifying news of the year.
Just how was Devon an orphan?
Then…at that time, when he approached her in her previous life when he told her to keep living, he was also alone?
“Please, don’t look at me that way, Alice.” He said.
“I never once wallowed about my situation.” “Then, just now…” Devon shook his head.
“I was only disappointed in myself, that the only thing I could do to help you right now was out of my reach.
I was disappointed that I could not help you with this simple task, even if I wanted to.” Alice went silent.
Just what was he saying?
That cold and sad expression just now was because he could not help her?
What sort of bullshit crap was that?
“It’s true.
I told you before, Alice.” He took her hand and placed it on his chest.
“My life belongs to you.
So whatever it is you want, I would get it for you and I would do anything.
Yet, the first thing you asked of me after I made that promise was something I could not do.
I feel like I’m a failure.” “Oh, would you shut up already?” Alice flared at him, shocking him as he blinked twice in confusion.
“Pardon?” “I told you, it was a joke.
I don’t need your life and I definitely didn’t ask you to become my servant either.” She got up in the car and grabbed his shoulders.
“You’re not a failure in any way.
You’re the light so many people look up to and you’re by far one of the kindest souls I have ever met.
Just because you couldn’t come up with a gift suggestion, it shouldn’t make you feel like you’re incapable of anything when you’re capable of so many great things.
Devon, do you know what I need from you right now?” Devon shook his head.
“I need you to remain bright, kind and handsome as you have been from the first day we met.” She declared.
“And if you can do that for me then I don’t need anything else from you.
Got it?” Devon took a moment to process what she said and then he came to understand things clearly.
“Kind?” The words softly escaped Devon’s lips.
“Yes, I can do that.” He slowly smiled, radiating his handsomeness.
“And I can stay bright too.
If it’s my handsome face you like then I’ll make sure nothing happens to it.” Alice smiled back at him.
Yes, all she needed from him was his benevolent and handsome face.
Complimenting her when she dressed up nicely and treat her well…
Was there anything more important than that?
‘Alice,’ Devon thought, keeping up his smile while his mind slowly darkened in despair.
‘If you knew the thoughts I was having for you then…Would you still consider me kind?’ Leo stared at them in somewhat disgust.
What was this level of PDA they were displaying when he was in the same space as them?
Please, he needed a break from all this drama.
CREATORS’ THOUGHTS Author_fredah Yeah, the PDA, even if they’re not trying, is borrowing into his eyes, lmao Okay, people, let’s go into Devon’s past a bit in the next chapter
