- Chapter 184 - Chapter 184 Let's sit, Devon
Chapter 184: Let’s sit, Devon Chapter 184: Let’s sit, Devon “Alice, do you want to hear a story?” Devon asked and Alice turned to look at him.
They had stopped at a gift shop and were looking around for a potential gift when Devon suddenly decided he wanted to tell a story.
“What about?” Alice asked.
“A boy,” he said.
“A little boy.” “Hm?” Alice was lost.
Why did he want to tell a story about a boy all of a sudden?
Well, maybe there was a reason behind it.
She nodded.
“Sure.” Devon nodded and looked through the gift cards.
“This boy woke up alone.” He started.
“He used to live in a small house that was just enough to care for him, his mother and father, and his newly born brother.
Every day, he would walk to his baby brother’s crib and smile at the little thing, singing lullabies and wishing he grew up to be strong and healthy.” They walked past the gift cards and arrived at the gift basket section.
“He loved his brother and took care of him so dearly because that was the only thing that made him smile like the sun.” “How old was he?” Alice asked, to Devon’s surprise, actually.
He didn’t know Alice would be interested enough to ask a question, even if it was a simple question like that.
“He was four years old.” He said.
“But he already felt the responsibility of an adult because he wanted to take care of his brother with utmost care and understanding.” “Ah, his baby brother seemed to be the world to him,” Alice said, and Devon nodded quite sadly.
“He was.” Alice wasn’t paying much attention to Devon’s facial expression but she could faintly tell how he felt through the tone of his voice.
She didn’t want to look at his face, telling herself it would be better if she didn’t see his expression.
“Then, did they live happily?” Alice asked.
“I told you, he woke up alone.
In this small house where it was easy to find anything just by taking a few steps, this boy woke up alone, not able to find his parents or his baby brother.
His memory prior to how he ended up unconscious was gone.” “Ah, what happened?” Alice asked but Devon did not go straight to answering her question.
Instead, he continued the story.
“This little boy searched the entire house over and over but there was no one.
And aside from that, everything was in shambles.
It looked like they had been robbed.
It was only after walking out of the house and going to the backyard that he realized where his parents had been all along.” Alice stopped walking, feeling intense emotions from Devon, and finally turned around, but he was smiling.
He was smiling so brightly that it contradicted the emotions she was feeling from him.
In the first place, how could she even feel his emotions?
It must be a mistake.

After all, he was telling a story, so there was no need to express strong emotions when telling a story.
“In the backyard, this little boy found a pool of blood.
The grasses were red, and the fence was repainted with splatters of blood as well.
It wasn’t just his parents he found there, lying in the pool of blood,” “His baby brother too?” She asked but he shook his head, leading her to sigh in relief for some reason.
“There were the neighbors.
It was a bloody massacre.” Alice flinched.
Ah, what was that?
It was just a story but she felt something strong from it.
“Would you two like to sit while doing storytelling?” Leo asked, interrupting them, and then turned to find him leaning on a shelf.
“I hate to admit it but I’m a lazy guy, so do this lazy guy a favor and sit for a moment.” Alice laughed and nodded.
“Let’s sit, Devon.” She said and took his hand.
“I want to hear everything.” Devon looked at her hand as she led him.
This wasn’t the first time, yet it always made him feel so light.
Leo rolled his eyes and found himself on the customer’s couch before they knew it.
There was more than enough space for one person so Alice sat down next to Leo, patting the other side for Devon to sit.
Devon wasted no time and sat down.
“So, go on.
You’re sitting to tell the story, right?
Get on with it so we can pick up a gift basket or whatnot and get out of here.” Leo said, making Devon realize that Leo had been listening as well, and though he wouldn’t admit it, he was interested in the story as well.
“Do you know what that little boy thought at that moment?” He asked Leo who wanted to be left alone.
“What else?
Fear and despair.
The poor kid must’ve been traumatized and confused.” He explained but Devon shook his head.
“I admit that the little boy was scared as soon as he saw all of that.
But it wasn’t because of the dead people and the blood, it wasn’t because he saw his parents dead, it was because he was yet to find his baby brother.” He explained.
“He dug through the piles of freshly dead bodies that were missing organs, limbs, and ripped apart.
It was gruesome but he kept at it, praying with his little mind that his baby brother was not on the death list.” Alice and Leo looked at him shocked.
Just how could he do that?
He was only four, wasn’t he?
Wasn’t that the age kids liked to be carefree and easily scared?
“And when he did not find his baby brother, he felt relieved.” Devon continued, slowly lowering his head.
“He felt so relieved that reality started sinking into his little mind.
His baby brother was not there; he was alive somewhere, but his parents were dead.
All his neighbors were in his backyard, dead.
Fear sank deeper like a knife piercing his heart and he cried.
He cried, holding on to his mother’s body and asking himself what had happened.” “Ah,” Alice exclaimed.
She didn’t even know what to say but the little boy knew sorrow before he could live out joy.
“He passed out soon enough.” Devon said.
“And woke up in a hospital with a policeman by his bedside.
Since he was the only survivor, they wanted answers from him.
But this little boy could not say anything.
All he could do was cry and ask for his baby brother, wherever he was.
That was all he needed.” CREATORS’ THOUGHTS Author_fredah Ah, the story is falling hard on my chest.
