- Chapter 239 - Chapter 239 I should've known
Chapter 239: I should’ve known Chapter 239: I should’ve known They took a taxi home, only to find Mark in the house and already preparing dinner.
Since there were going to be a lot of portions to satisfy Alice’s appetite, he always cooked really early.
“Ah, Mark?” Alice called out as she walked in.
The fresh smell of chicken sauce led her to the kitchen as soon as she opened the door.
Her mouth salivated as she turned to Mark, who was staring at the sauce.
“I thought you’d be home late,” she said, but her eyes were fixed on the sauce on the stove.
“So, why are you here right now?” “Before you ask that, why not clean the drool that’s about to flood the room?” Leo asked and Alice closed her mouth, cleaning her drool with the handkerchief he stretched out to her.
“Ah, sorry.
But it smells so good.” Alice said.
“Thank you,” Mark said, smiling delightedly.
“And as for why I’m here right now,” he turned towards the stove and continued stirring.
“Well, I resigned as a jailer.” A silent bomb dropped after his words and the only sound they heard was that of the boiling sauce and the flames of the stove.
“Ah, did I hear him right?” Alice asked Leo whole pointing at Mark.
“It appears we both heard the same thing.” Leo said, covering his mouth as he pondered.
“But I can’t tell if we heard the right thing or not.
Could you perhaps repeat what you said because I am sure I heard you say something about resigning as a jailer?” “Is it that hard to believe?” Mark asked, taken quite aback by their reaction.
Even Leo, who hadn’t been around long enough, was just as shocked as Alice.
Leo glanced at Alice, wondering why she was genuinely concerned about this.
He was concerned for no reason in particular.
He was just shocked that Mark would let go of the only job he could maintain as an Awakened since he was basically useless on the field.
Then, for Alice…
What was it?
She didn’t know his backstory so she had no idea that that was the only job he could take as an Awakened.
So, what was it?
“Really?
Why?” Alice asked.
“If you resign, how are you going to get paid that enormous fee?” Leo palmed his face and turned around.
Ah, he should’ve known.
If it wasn’t food then the second thing Alice was most concerned about was money.
Since she hadn’t said anything about money in recent days, he thought she had toned down her obsession with it.

But of course, she did have trillions in her ring, so maybe that was why she was no longer concerned, but that made him forget.
‘I should’ve known.’ he thought.
“If you’re worried about my salary and how we can go by, then don’t worry; I have quite enough in all my accounts to let me live luxurious for life.” He said, showing off his cards and his wealth, blinding Alice with the radiant rays of riches.
“Ah, that’s a relief.” She let out a sigh of relief but then turned serious.
“That aside, why did you resign?” She asked.
“Do you plan to start raiding dungeons?” “No, but don’t worry about me.” He said, walking over and dropping his hand on her head to patt it.
“I already found a new job.” “What?!
Already?” Mark watched her surprised expression and laughed subtly as if trying to hide his own excitement.
Alice watched him laugh and then turned to Leo, whispering, “Pst, Leo, it seems we really did become comedians.
Look, even Mark is laughing.” “Hey, speak for yourself.” Leo blankly said.
“Well, I guess we should celebrate, right?” “Why celebrate?” Mark asked, gazing at Leo with eyes that did not fully trust him.
“Well, for one thing, you got out of that messy job as a jailer.
And for another, you already found yourself a new job.
And from the looks of it, you seem to like your new job.
So, it calls for celebration, right?” “Yeah, I think it does.” Alice said.
“Let’s add more food to the menu to celebrate.” Leo caught her collar and started dragging her away.
“Not that kind of celebration.” He said while dragging her.
“You’ll only overwork him, so then he won’t have any energy to celebrate.” “Hm, sounds bad.” Alice said, while letting herself get dragged.
“Then we’ll leave you to think of the celebration method.” She gave him two thumbs up.
They got out of the kitchen and found Damian sitting in the living room.
That was when they remembered they had carried an extra body with them from school.
“Ah,” Alice got out of Leo’s hold and rushed back to the kitchen.
“I forgot to mention.
We have an extra mouth to feed, so please take that into consideration when preparing dinner.” She said but Leo caught her collar again.
“Taking a bit from your portion won’t kill you.” He said over clenched teeth.
“After all, you were the one who so benevolently wanted him to come over for dinner.” Alice folded her arms and pouted her lips.
‘Ah, I did not sign up for this.’ *Neither did I.
So, quit your whining and get your ass upstairs.* Mark stood there, still processing their words when he uttered slowly, “A…
Guest?” He walked out of the kitchen to see who it was, since Alice and Leo seemed to have forgotten the crucial part, which was introducing the guest.
“Ah, it’s you.” Mark exclaimed and Damian stood to his feet.
“You must be Devon Snow’s younger brother, am I right?” “Yes, thank you for having me.” Damian immediately got close to greet them properly.
“My name is Damian Snow.
It’s nice to meet you.” Mark went silent.
He stared at the boy.
His resemblance was uncanny to Devon but at the same time, one could not easily tell they were related.
Was it because of their aura?
Where Devon had this cold atmosphere that reflected his abilities, Damian was more on the sunny side.
Devon was easygoing, being an honest man that cared for others, the weak, the defenseless, and many more, but it was still a fact that his prowess, as well as his mind fortitude, made it seem like he was a difficult man to approach.
But Damian seemed to be the exact opposite.
He was a ray of sunshine, this one.
All sides were open for approach and he didn’t have a wall.
For someone who Devon treasured so much, he was pretty defenseless and looked like an easy target.
So, this one was in the same class as Alice, eh?
Did that mean he was an A or B-class awakened?
He sized him up.
He didn’t seem like it.
Then, Devon must’ve pulled some strings to let his brother be close to Alice.
What was the motive though?
So she could protect him?
Or so he could have someone telling him about how Alice was in school.
Mark just couldn’t weigh out the reason but since Damian seemed like a good kid, he wouldn’t probe further.
At least, not until he sensed something was amiss.
“I’m Mark Steiner,” Mark stretched out his hand for a handshake.
“Welcome to my home.” CREATORS’ THOUGHTS Author_fredah Okay, don’t be hard on the little one, Mark.
