Chapter 316: A seashell
Just as they were heading down the beach, Micheal said,
“I don’t think we’re well dressed to be on the beach.” Alice nodded.
“And so?”
“Well, it would look weird, I assume.”
“And since when was looking weird a new thing to you?” She asked and dragged him down regardless. “If you’re worried about me then save it. I’ve had more weird eyes on me than you could count. So, I’m fine with it.”
He went silent. Alice was really one of a kind.
But why was it her? Why was she the one who had ‘that’ power? Why was she a target?
It took only a little observation to know that Alice was the reason those gates spawned abnormally and kept changing classes.
“Alice,” he called as they touched the ground but she wasn’t listening, taking off her shoes and handing them to him.
“Here, hold this.” She said and sunk her feet in the wet sand. “Wow, this feels so good. I heard about it from one of the girls back then but I didn’t think it would feel this good. It’s amazing.”
She started running, leaving her trails on the sand.
“Look, Micheal. It’s a seashell!” She yelled, raiding the seashell and laughing.
She looked really happy.
It was the kind of peace and serenity that got her excited most times. She was so happy.
“Be careful, Alice. Or you’ll fall.”
“So, what if I fall?” She was reckless, turning around and acting carefree. “This is the best feeling. Freedom!” She yelled.
“Freedom,” Micheal repeated, muttering to himself. “That’s a nice word. I, too, wish to be free. Just like you, Alice.”
“Huh? Did you say something?” Alice yelled and he looked up to find she had gone a great distance but could still hear his voice.
“No, it’s fine.”
“What are you just standing there for? Join me, Micheal.” She yelled, waving her hand.
She looked like a child experiencing this thrill for the first time.
“I think it’d be better if I just stayed here and held your shoe.” Micheal said and she clicked her tongue.
“No way, that’s no fun. Come play with me. It’s not like it’s every day you get to come to the beach, right?” She yelled and he side.
The waves started drawing near and they hit his boots. He did not move from his spot and watched as the gentle waves soaked his boots.
He would’ve taken off his boots but… He looked up at Alice and said,
“I’m coming to you now.”
He started walking and noticed the place he had stood for a long time had sunk in deep. As the waves rushed in, the hole got filled up and a seashell washed up into it.
“A seashell.” he said and went back to pick it up.
He looked at the shell, wondering what fascinated Alice so much.
“You found a seashell too.” Alice said, suddenly standing next to him. “I heard if you place it on your ear, you’ll be able to hear the ocean.”

“But I’m already hearing the ocean.” He said, watched as she took it from him and placed it on her ear, same with the other one she had picked up.
Both ears closed by the seashell made her smile as she whispered,
“I can hear the ocean.”
Michael was confused and he turned his gaze to the ocean. Weren’t they already listening to the ocean from where they stood? It was right in front of them.
So, what was so different about the one she was listening to from the shells?
“Wanna try it?”
She handed it to him and though unsure, he placed it on his ear. It was soft and gentle, the sound of the ocean from the shell, just as the one he was staring at.
Alice could not tell if he was enjoying it since she could not see his face but she hoped he was. After all, she loved it when she listened to it.
It was her first time, and though she was not doing much, she felt so excited, calm, and fulfilled. Was this why people came to the beach for a vacation? The rest and calmness it gave.
‘I should be the others here next time.’
For some reason, the ocean’s sound coming from the shell was even more calming. Micheal felt relaxed, and when his lips were about to curl up in a smile, he heard a deep voice come from the shell.
“You seem to be having fun.”
His eyes widened and he removed the shell from his ear at once, falling it to the floor.
“Hey, what happened?” Alice asked, feeling his sudden shock, only for the waves to take the shell away. “Oh no, it got away.” She exclaimed and looked up at Micheal. “Are you okay?”
“Ah, no. I’m sorry.” Micheal said. “I’m fine but I think I got lost in thoughts for a while.”
“Do you want to take off your mask for a moment? I’ll turn away.” She said but he shook his head. “I can’t see it but it looks like you’d really need a breather.”
“No, it’s fine. Let’s–” his phone beeped and he took it out to see that the destination for the new portal had been sent. “Let’s head to the portal now, Alice.”
He had calmed down all of a sudden but Alice was certain he had been out of it for a moment there.
It was as if he had been told a horrifying news. She couldn’t see his face, so she couldn’t be sure, but that was the energy he gave off.
“Then, let’s go.” She said and he bent down to help her put on her shoes. “Hey, what are you doing?”
“Helping you put on your shoes. We can’t have you wearing them with sand, right?” He asked, and she went silent, holding onto his shoulder as he treated her like a child.
He held one of her legs, got rid of all the sound, cleaned off the moist with his handkerchief, and then put on her shoe.
He did the same for both legs and when he was down, he swept her off her feet and said,
“I believe it’ll be faster if I carried you.”
“I feel it’ll make no difference, so put me down, thank you.” She said not he carried her regardless.
“Just hold on tight, Alice.” He said and she went silent.
He was suddenly acting weird after that shock. What happened to him?
She could only wonder as she rested her head on his chest, keeping her arms around his neck and waiting till he got to his destination.
Micheal had a secret he wasn’t telling Alice. A secret he wasn’t telling anyone.
