Chapter 334: ‘Damian will understand’
After that being said, Devon felt the position of his place in her heart was even more special than he thought. She would go as far as killing others for his sake.
He was touched but… He could not afford to have her spill blood because of him.
Damian, on the other hand, felt Alice looked really cool even though her threat was deadly.
He knew she was just saying that because she worried Devon would keep sacrificing himself for others.
He, too, was worried to death so he was glad Alice did that.
When he saw that Devon had lost his arm, he tried all he could to heal him, thinking maybe the properties of the elixir would manifest somehow with his healing but it didn’t work.
He was so heartbroken and contemplated whether to call Alice and let her know about it but he didn’t. He didn’t want to disturb her.
So, he cried, wiping away his tears with– no, it was more like sucking away his tears with his powers. The fact that his tears were liquid allowed him to manipulate them at will. So, any of it that rolled from his eyes floated away from his face and fell on the handkerchief beside him.
Devon seemed to forget that Damian would worry to death if he saw him with a missing arm. Maybe he felt, ‘Damian will understand’ as he always did each time he came back injured from a dungeon raid.
But it wasn’t about understanding; it was the fact that, as his brother, he worried too much for him and was scared that one day, he would leave to raid a dungeon and never come back.
Damian was understanding, yes, but it was only because he knew his brother had a duty to uphold as an S-class awakened and a guild master, so he didn’t want to hinder him from his responsibilities.
He couldn’t be greedy. He couldn’t act spoiled. He couldn’t whine about not wanting him to go through gates, raid dungeons and fight dangerous monsters. All he could do was silently pray that he returned safe and sound and in one piece too.
And each time he did return, he was beyond grateful.
But it still hurt him every time, and the loneliness caught up to him each time. He was grateful to Alice for the last few days when she kept him company because his heart had been very uneasy, and the thought of staying home alone was becoming even more unbearable.
(Wait, shouldn’t you be grateful to Leo more?)
And, of course, Leo. He studied with him and did their assignments together before the sports event training started.
They both helped fill the void that kept growing each time his brother walked through their door and was gone for days.
He didn’t want his brother to engage in these dangerous raids anymore, risking his life while protecting others. He just… Wanted him to stay home.
So, he was beyond thankful for Alice’s threat.
With this, his brother would not throw his life indecisively and would come back to him at the end of the day.
Mark turned to Devon who had scored points with Alice just by losing an arm and doing dangerous things. He had gotten her attention once more and even though Alice was mad at him, he could tell that she was just being worried.
Her words and threats said so.
“You won’t be able to go into dungeons for the time being,” He said to Devon, folding his arms and Devon nodded, understandably.
“I might still be a target so I don’t want to drag anyone into my mess.” Devon said. “It looked like it was after me.”
“More like it was after the smell you gave off.” Mark said. “I wonder what smell but since you have no clue, I don’t think I’ll know either.”
Devon went silent, thinking deeply about it.
“You know, the things that mysterious shadow figure said weigh on my mind.” He said. “It spoke as if the smell that attracted it was from my lover, but I don’t have a lover, and I certainly haven’t indulged with anyone in my life.”
“Hm,” Mark looked away, also pondering on it. “It assumed the owner of the smell was your lover, but what if it’s just someone you’re always around, and the smell got off on you? But maybe to it, it’s a smell but to you, it’s a natural scent that you’re used to. If you can figure out who it might’ve been referring to then you might know its target.”
“And if I can’t tell who its target is, then I can prevent them from getting hurt.” Devon said. “But I doubt I’ll be able to do anything if that monster strikes again.” He stared at his trembling hand. “I couldn’t move an inch in its presence. I couldn’t even teleport from its range. I was paralyzed with fear and my thoughts were in shambles. I won’t be able to protect anyone like this.”
“Even so, just try to figure out who it might be, and then you can think of what to do afterward,” Mark said, and Devon nodded.

He watched Mark head to the kitchen. Since Alice was awake, that meant she would need to eat soon. So, he had to start preparing brunch.
Devon sat there right Damian, standing a few feet away from him, leaning on the wall.
Damian watched his brother think deeply and sighed. He looked up the stairs and decided to go meet Alice.
Maybe she would be less mad right now. Even if she was still mad, he’d think of something to cheer her up.
She liked grabbing his cheeks, so maybe that would make her feel better. However, the baby fat on his cheek was gone now. He hoped she’d still feel okay with it.
“Damian,” Devon called out as Damian was about to climb up the stairs. “I… Haven’t apologized to you yet, have I?”
Damian paused, his grip on the railing tightened. Of course, he hadn’t, but… What use was an apology at this point?
He turned, smiling,
“You don’t have to apologize, brother.” He said. “You didn’t do anything wrong, really. The lives of others are important, so I understand why you had to do that.”
Though he said that, Devon could see otherwise. His eyes could see his forced grip on the railing that contradicted the smile on his lips. He watched Damian turn around, planning to head up without letting go of the heavy feelings in his heart and he felt he had failed.
He had failed a lot.
He lowered his head in shame and said,
“I think I’m gradually failing as the big brother you love.” He said and Damian’s eyes widened. “In the world, you should be my utmost priority, my number one responsibility, and making sure I don’t bring you to tears with my actions is what I should think about but I…” He covered his face as he bowed his head even more. “Keep making you cry, don’t I?”
