Chapter 338: A morning call
Alice’s senses seemed to have grown sharper during the weekend, so even if someone entered her room while she was deeply asleep, that state where she was no different from a sleeping corpse, she would wake up.
And so, when Miss Stella entered her room that morning, she opened her eyes, only to find Miss Stella stretching her phone towards her.
“Alice, my father wants to speak to you.” She said and Alice blinked. What could this be about all of a sudden? And why was she looking so serious?
If the chairman wanted to speak to her so early in the morning then it was probably not a light news.
“Hello,” she answered with a sleepy tone.
“Alice, dear, sorry to wake you up with this impromptu call.” He said as she slowly sat up, rubbing her eyes.
“Well, it’s okay.” She yawned. “I bet it was almost time for me to wake up anyway. So, what’s up, Gramps? Is there an emergency?”
“I don’t think I should call it an emergency but I wanted to let you know first.” He said and cleared his throat. “In the middle of the night, the heads of the association held a live chat meeting.”
“O-kay,” she glanced at Miss Stella standing at the side.
“And it was about the sports event coming up at your school, as well as other schools. They’ve decided to change things up a bit.” He explained and Alice anticipated what he wanted to say next.
If the association was suddenly involved in an event that ‘she’ was taking place in, then it definitely wasn’t a roses and sunshine news next.
Just… What could they want to do?
“The thing is, they want to…” Alice’s eyes widened.
The rest of the class got to hear the news that morning during the roll call.
The news that Alice had heard from the chairman himself was announced by Miss Stella during class that morning while she was calling names to make sure everyone was in school.
Lance was back in school, and he definitely had eyes on Alice at the back, whose eyes were fixed out the window, with her chin resting on her palm as she yawned in exhaustion.
“So, the sports event will take a different turn as ordered by the Awakened association and agreed by the Awakened agency.” Miss Stella announced. “The events won’t be against each other or against the other classes anymore. The event will be against other schools.”
“Whoa, does this mean we get to meet other high-class awakened kids like us from the other schools?”
“I’m so in for this news. I was getting worried about using my full strength and hurting my fellow classmates. But if it’s a stranger, I think I can do that much.”
The class was excited about this news. But what they did not know was that after all that regular sports using their skills as awakeneds, they would have to engage in battles. Group battles and then one-on-one to determine the final winner.
Surely, the association knew that if Alice was involved, she would definitely be the one to take the trophy home, but for some reason, they were confident that there was at least one area where she lacked, and they would be able to get her weak point from there.
“I’m sorry, Alice,” Adolf apologized over the phone. “Everyone was in support of the decision and I didn’t want it to seem like I was shielding you, so I agreed to their demands.”
Alice was silent. If he had argued with them over that issue, then they would’ve had cause to believe that he was playing favorites and didn’t want them to know the truth about such a powerful person who may or may not be their enemy in the future.
They wanted a guarantee that she could control that bast power she wielded and also wanted to get a weakness that could stop her if she ever went big bad on them and humanity.
“Well, it’s okay,” She said. “I mean, it’s not like it’ll make much of a difference.” She rolled her eyes away. ‘Honestly, I really want to sit the sports event out. So, maybe this is a good thing. If I fake a weakness and I get disqualified early, I just might get my freedom early.”
That was the plan, but Adolf had other plans.
“Alice,” he called, a certain stillness in his tone. “…try your best, okay?”
“What?”
“I want you to show those who look down on you that you can’t be easily messed with. The power you wield, show them that it’s not something they can take on lightly.” He said.
In other words, he wanted her to give it her all, but…

“Can’t I show them what I’ve got after the sports event when I fight with Noah?” She asked with a dissatisfied look on her face and Adolf stifled a laugh.
From the tone of her voice, he could tell what face she was making. That sort of, ‘But I don’t wanna do it, it’s so exhausting’ kind of expression.
“I understand but they will only look down on you more and start saying stuff like you resulted in cheap tricks to boost your power just to fight Noah since you couldn’t even get through to the final stage of a competition with kids whose power levels were less than that of an expert.”
Alice scratched her head. Yeah, she got it. It was annoying but he was right.
Those guys had seen what she could do but they still didn’t want to believe it. A bunch of stubborn old people.
“Alright, Gramps,” she dropped her hand from her head. “I’ll do it. I’ll give it my all.”
And that was how that conversation went. Alice yawned and then glanced at the girls who were gobbling Damian up with their eyes.
Yeah, he had changed ‘quite’ a lot but they didn’t have to make it so obvious that they had fallen in love at first sight. It was annoying.
And though Damian wasn’t paying attention to them, he still felt a little bit uncomfortable with their gaze.
‘Is this how Alice and Leo feel when people keep staring at them?’ he thought and then sighed in exhaustion.
Alice patted his back and he looked at her to see her thumbs up in the air for him.
“Stay strong.” She said and that actually made his day. He smiled and nodded.
“Alright, since that’s done. We should start heading to the fields. But before that,” the front door slid open and a girl walked in. “I’d like to introduce to you a new classmate.” She turned to the girl who walked in and said, “Elizabeth Harts, who has lived in England until now, and… An S-class awakened. She will be joining us from today.”
