Chapter 358: And have I ever done anything that could harm Alice?
The person who would be capable of getting him monster meat at this point will be… Devon.

The door opened and Mark walked in with his hands filled with all that he got from the supermarket.

He exhaled as he walked in steadily to avoid falling the things he had managed to get here safely. Yes, he was strong but that did not mean he could grow extra limbs to help him carry the groceries.

Times like this he wished he had a spatial ring like the one Alice owned. He could’ve bought more things if he had it.

Leo got up and went to help him while thinking if it was possible to contact Devon and collect, even if it was just the thigh, of a monster they might’ve killed recently.

‘Do they even keep the monsters they kill?’ he wondered.

“Thank you,” Mark said as Leo took a few of the things from his hand and started heading for the kitchen. He was absent-mindedly thinking of something else but was still conscious enough to not walk into a wall.

‘Humans are curious beings, so they would definitely take a few of the monster bodies to work on them. They would try to use the materials from the monsters to create weapons and merchandise, too. There must be somewhere I can get monster meat.’ he thought and placed the things on the counter.

Then, he turned to Mark and asked,

“Has there been any gate breaks recently?”

Mark looked at him rather perplexed.

“Uh, I… Yes.” Mark answered, his words jumbling because of his surprise. “I think.”

“And there were monsters that trouped out of the gate?”

“I mean, that’s what a gate break is, isn’t it?” Mark answered, still looking at Leo weirdly as he dropped his own grocery bags on the kitchen counter.

Leo was acting a bit strange.

Was it what had happened earlier that day that was making him act out of the ordinary? He didn’t remember Leo being so talkative in matters that didn’t concern Alice.

Or did this actually concern her?

“Mark, I need you to do something for me,” Leo said, looking sternly and seriously at Mark. “I need to get a piece of monster meat.”

“What?!” Mark exclaimed, shocked. What would he need that for?

“No matter the monster, just get me something that’s at least this big.” He raised his hands, giving the size of meat he needed.

It wasn’t so big since his hands weren’t far apart. It was the size of meat that could fit into their deep long pot. And if sliced properly, it would be half of the pot.

But…

“Leo, Monster meats are poisonous to the human body.” Mark pointed out. “You don’t expect me to get you that sort of thing to feed Alice, do you?”

“And have I ever done anything that could harm Alice?” Leo asked, his eyes suddenly growing cold and dark.

Mark almost flinched as chills ran down his body. Leo’s gaze… It looked like he was angry but he didn’t particularly look angry.

He grabbed his own hand, stopping it from shaking.

“You humans don’t know the method yet, so you can’t eat monster meat, but this won’t be the first time Alice is eating monster meat,” Leo said, walking past him and Mark turned to him.

“What?!”

“Back in the gate, that very one she entered to save all of you, I processed the monster meat for her because,” he raised his index finger, “It was something needed to stabilize the energy growth in her body which was severely lacking because of lack of a proper meal, and two…” He let out his next finger. “…she was hungry.” He dropped his hands and tucked them in his pocket. “Alice likes monster meat the most but unless I’m the one preparing it, she won’t be able to eat it because of the poison.”

Mark went silent, his throat itching so he gulped. So, monster meat could be eaten, huh? He didn’t doubt what Leo had to say because, unlike the rest of them, Leo was the one who had been stuck with Alice since the beginning, and he was literally tied to her.

There was no way he would do something to harm her.

He cared for her the most.

That reality shattered Mark’s heart but he did not dwell too much on it and said,

Leo stared at Mark speculating deeply and took his hand out of his pocket, brushed his hair back, and said,

“I could’ve gone to get it myself but I can’t be too far from Alice right now. The rope isn’t that long.” He said and Mark wondered, ‘What rope?’

It was probably the connection between them. If Leo got too far, he would disintegrate and simply not be able to move past a certain radius.

“If it’s too far from here, you think you might not be able to retrieve it, I can just look for someone else. I think Devon would be able to do it since he can teleport there at will.” He lowered his head a bit. ‘But it might be next to a gate and Devon had already been exposed to the risk of Demons. Right now,’ he glanced at Mark. ‘I don’t even think it’s alright to send just one of them.’

“It’s not that far.” Mark answered, clenching his fists. “I’ll go get it but it might take some time.”

“Well, we don’t have a lot of time. It’s not a piece of cake processing monster meat so I have to start right away.” Leo explained and raised a phone which happened to be Marks.

Surprised, Mark searched his pockets but his phone wasn’t there.

“Stop searching, this is yours.” Leo said, tapping the phone till he got to the contact he needed.

“How did you get past my password?” Mark asked and Leo glanced at him with a blank gaze.

“Really? Is that what you’re asking?” He returned his gaze to the phone. For someone whose heart and mind were currently revolving around Alice and who was trying hard not to forget Alice’s birthday, he was asking a pretty lame question.

Besides, even if Leo hadn’t guessed it, it wasn’t such a hard accomplishment to open his phone without breaking it.

The number he dialed began to ring and Devon answered,

“Hello?”

“It’s me, Leo.” Leo said with a calm tone. “Are you busy right now?”

“Not exactly, I just finished preparing dinner.” Devon answered and Leo glanced at the wall clock. It was past 6 and they returned home about two hours ago.

“Could you come over for a minute? You’ll only be gone for about ten minutes so your food should still be warm by then.” Leo said but Devon went silent.

It wasn’t the fact that Leo said his food would still be warm that left him speechless, actually… Whenever had Leo said so many words to him? And why was he with Mark’s phone?

This must be an emergency.

“I’ll be there right now.” Devon said and signaled Damian that he would be out for just a few minutes.

Damian nodded and Devon disappeared, appearing again in the living room where Leo was just about to drop the phone from his ear.

“Is this an emergency?” He asked and Leo answered,

“You can just think of it as such.” He threw Mark’s phone back to him and Mark caught it effortlessly while gazing at Leo quite fiercely.

Leo pointed at Devon and said,

“Use your teleportation skills, take Mark with you to one of the areas where a gate break occurred, and get a piece of monster meat for me.”

Devon’s eyes widened.

“What?” His forehead creased. “What do you need that for?”

“To feed Alice,” Leo simply answered and it made Devon crease further.

“Monster meat isn’t edible.”

“That’s for me to think about.” Leo said, tucking his hands in his pocket again.

He looked so calm, level headed, and nonchalant. He wouldn’t care what they had to say so even if they refused, he would look for someone else. But then, why would they even refuse when they were doing it for Alice?

Yet… The thought of accidentally poisoning Alice made them feel rather uneasy.

But since it was Leo’s idea, there might actually be a way.

“Whew,” Devon exhaled, brushing the back of his hair. “I understand.” He said and Mark looked at him, surprised that it didn’t take long to convince him. “But just getting one of the monsters that were killed from a gate break isn’t good enough. The last gate break was reported yesterday so the monsters there might have started to decay.”

“They decay in a day? That’s fast.” Leo said, going to sit and cross his legs.

“Even if they’re not fully decayed, meat like that isn’t great. If you’re going to feed it to Alice then it has to be in good condition.” Devon pointed out. “Mark and I will go to the ‘red zone’ and get at least one freshly killed monster.”

“What?!” Mark exclaimed.
