Chapter 359: He was speaking in his head again
“Mark and I will go to the ‘red zone’ and get at least one freshly killed monster.”
“What?!” Mark exclaimed.
Devon looked at Mark. Wasn’t this the best thing to do? He was sure Mark would want nothing but the best for Alice but why was he so shocked?
Ah, he quickly realized that Mark was not the kind of Awakened who fought monsters. He was bad at it and even when his stats and class were high, he could not even think of taking on a monster.
But… Wasn’t it time to break out of that chain? How did he plan to protect Alice in the future if he could not even utilize his own power?
‘Protect? That’s so arrogant of me.’ Devon thought. ‘The only one doing the protecting would be Alice. The rest of us would just be a burden. But… It doesn’t mean we have to be weak and useless. If we can’t even watch our backs and rely on Alice to do most of the work, what does that make us?’
“The idea is quite good.” Leo said. “If you can get a freshly killed monster, even better. But don’t bring the whole thing. At least, leave the head there. It’s unsightly and we won’t have anywhere to dump it after we’re done.”
“Understood,” Devon answered but Mark was still skeptical.
Devon answered to Leo well, even when Leo looked like he was the same age as Damian. It was probably because he knew that under that calm and pretty face, there was a power that he could never rival.
The power that made it fit for him to be with Alice at all times. The power that distinguished priority from feelings.
He liked Alice a lot, he really did. But how could he be of help to someone as amazing as her when he was this weak? He was an S-class, yes, one of the strongest humanity had to offer, but he could not even hold a candle to her.
It made him feel desperate to get stronger… Made him feel rather useless but it didn’t mean he would back out at a corner. He would keep watching Alice and pray that his feelings reach her one day, his concern and his wishes.
He would smile and hope for her to smile back, watch her stay carefree and relaxed for as long as it took.
And even if she did not return his feelings… He would not complain. Just watching her act out her age and remain happy was enough and he hoped he could love her without restraints for as long as it took.
He did not know if this was the same for Mark.
Devon glanced at Mark, who shared similar feelings he had with Alice.
He would definitely want to do anything for Alice, but he was not sure about things that he might not come back from.
The red zone was already dangerous, and even though he would have an S-class going with him, he did not know if an unexpected variable would occur that would endanger their lives.
He still wanted to live longer to stay by Alice’s side, feed her all the food she could eat, and watch her grow into someone more remarkable that the world would recognize at a glance.
He wanted the peaceful days to last, but…
“Are you scared?” Leo suddenly asked, causing him to gasp out of his thoughts and he raised his head to look at Leo. “I know fear once I see one. You’re scared of dying, right?”
“Is there anyone who isn’t?” Mark asked, dropping his head.
“And yet… You don’t want to refuse either.” Leo pointed out. “If you didn’t want to go, you could’ve just told Devon to go on his own since he wouldn’t need to watch a burden while he tried to get at least one monster down,”
The word ‘burden’ hit Mark and he gritted his teeth while darting his eyes away.
“But fear can’t be overcome by simply staying home and away from the danger.” Leo added. *If you can’t even go into the fields and risk your life for Alice’s favorite thing, just what more can you do for Alice?*
Mark’s eyes widened and then they began to tremble. Leo’s lips did not move and his voice echoed so deeply in his head.
He was speaking in his head again.
*You pride yourself on taking care of Alice, making sure you feed her till she’s full and has no room to complain, but you’re an A-class Awakened and not a simple chef. You should at least be able to throw yourself into the field to acquire the final ingredient that will put a smile on her face.*
The words once again hit Mark and he grabbed his arm.
Devon was a bit left out. He knew no one was talking, but the way Leo had his eyes on Mark and how Mark felt even more uneasy made it feel like they were having a continued conversation but in their minds.

Leo was capable of doing such a thing, so it wouldn’t surprise him, but what could they be talking about that they needed to keep it within their thoughts?
*I’m not saying all this to make you feel bad, but there will come a time when you will need to pick up your weapon and fight for Alice. If you can’t even do it now that your life is not at stake, if you wait till there’s only ‘one way to survive’ then you’ll remain hopeless forever. You will not be able to aid Alice properly in the future fights to come.*
‘I… Understand.’ Mark answered, shutting his eyes tight. ‘I can’t hide in the kitchen forever, even I know that. But I always dreaded the day when I would have to go out. I…’
“You’re looking for a reason to move, right?” Leo asked, finally speaking out. “Then, put Alice as the reason behind everything you do. Make her your driving force and the reason why you’re alive today. Your power…” He pointed at Mark. “… Belongs to Alice. Put that at the back of your mind.”
The words were heavy and Mark’s heart… Which felt like it had been chained by his own chains, began to thump.
It was just a few words and yet… He placed his hand on his chest… It impacted a lot.
It made him realize that, to live a life that he could be proud of next to Alice, he had to at least be able to put his head on the line.
“Alright,” Mark answered, dropping his hand from his chest.
He stood straight with his face filled with determination. Devon couldn’t see it but he felt the surge of energy that Mark was giving off.
The kind of energy that was ready to face anything to accomplish his goals. Whatever they talked about, he was glad it was able to put Mark into shape.
“Alright, enough stalling,” Leo said, waving them off. “Since Devon is with you, you might not even need to lift a finger. So, hurry up and get back. Alice will probably wake up soon so I need to prepare it before she does.”
“Don’t we need to get ready first?” Mark asked but Leo pointed at his neck and said,
“That chain is all you need. If you get blood on you, you just have to wash up once you get back. We’ve already wasted time trying to convince you so that’s it. Go into the red zone and try not to die.”
Devon smiled proudly and dropped his hand on Mark’s shoulder, causing Mark to panic. Sure, he said he was ready to do it, but they were going right away?
At least, give him time to prepare his mind properly.
“We’ll be back soon.” Devon said and then snapped his fingers.
They were gone and Leo was left to sigh in relief.
To think it would take so many words to convince one muscle head. And he wasn’t fully convinced yet. The fire to give his head for Alice was not big enough, but he admired his determination.
“Now,” Leo got up. “I’ll need to prepare a few things. Let me check what he bought from the grocery store.” He walked towards the kitchen.
The red zone was a forsaken land filled with monsters, deadly monsters. And to survive in a place like that, one had to be extremely skilled and be quick on their feet.
No one knew how many monsters would swarm at them as soon as they arrived there, but it was best not to make a commotion up front and attract all those deadly monsters if they planned to make a quick stop.
And thus, Devon and Mark, who were lucky, were able to return as soon as they left.
They faced one monster. It was a three-eyed red wolf that looked like it was searching for scraps away from the rest of the monsters.
“I’m going to make this quick,” Devon said and his bracelet glowed, transforming into his sword in his hand.
He slashed the air and, in a split second, had crossed paths with the wolf, stood tall behind it, and stopped the blood from his blade.
The wolf lost its head and slumped on the floor.
Mark was amazed. He didn’t even see his movement but he had taken care of the monster already. Guess with how amazing Alice was, he had forgotten just how amazing S-class awakeneds were.
Devon smiled and said,
“Let’s take the monster back.”
