Chapter 374: Ugh, this is why I hate studying
Thanks to those old men’s intervention, the sports event that was supposed to be a fun event for the awakened students, even if it was organized to distinguish those with potential, was now about competition between the strongest.
In other words, anyone below B-class was literally just a bystander unless they had skills that could rival those of the A and B-class… Which was next to impossible.
They simply had it out for Alice and wanted to watch a good show but she had no plans of making things spectacular. She would give them the most boring fight they had ever witnessed.
(She’ll probably change her mind when her opponent happens to be the demon that’s now escorting Elizabeth. The fight will be hot)
And now, standing opposite Alice with his sword out was the sword user of class A. His name was Steven.
He was a rather quiet boy, if she could say so herself, since she had never once heard him speak and he was mostly minding his business.
But since he was in her class, she was certain he knew of her capabilities and how ‘strong’ she was. And yet… He had this bold expression on his face, looking unnerved and indifferent as he awaited the moment to strike her with his weapon.
She didn’t know if he was just trying to stay calm because panicking wouldn’t help or if he was simply that confident in his skills while hoping that she was still a novice with the sword… Whichever it was, this guy had guts.
“Are both sides ready?” Philip asked, and Alice gave her an okay sign with her hand.
She held her sled with both hands, pointing the tip slightly upwards while facing Steven. She could simply swing down and clash the ground into two but she decided to minimize the amount of damage done.
And that was the hard part. Holding back.
“Ready,” Steven said, his eyes on Alice as he paid attention to her lacking posture.
He felt she was still far from being a swordsman, though he was still far from it as well but he had practiced the basics long enough to take a perfect stance in his sleep.
He would not lose when it came to technique.
His determination burned in his eyes, and Alice, who was paying more attention to her sword, felt it. She raised her gaze and saw the fire burning in his eyes.
‘Ha, look at this kid.’ she thought, her lips curling up.
“Alice, don’t overdo it.” Philip gave one final warning.
“Geez, if you were going to nag me over and over, why didn’t we just work with wooden swords?” She asked him. “I mean, it’s not impossible to inflict damage with wooden swords but it’s still safer, don’t you think?”
“Tell that to the agency,” Philip grumbled. “They don’t provide wooden swords.” He said and she clicked her tongue.
They were really out to get them, weren’t they?
“Alright, start.” Philip announced and Alice, who had broken out of her stance when talking to Philip, decided to do the stance again.
That was all she was worried about.
But while she tried to take her stance, Steve saw it as an opportunity to strike first. But unfortunately for him, his movements were no different from a snail’s in the eyes of Alice.
He was practically moving in slow motion while she tried to remember the right stance to counter his.
There were different stances Devon thought her but she was already mixing them up.
‘Ugh, this is why I hate studying.’ she thought and raised her gaze.
At this point, Steven had already gotten to her, with his swords ready to slash her, when she raised her own sword and cut him down.
She did not put a tenth of her strength into it and it was still enough to put down a kid who was fighting purely with his skill.
It had all happened in a flash and by the time they blinked, Alice’s sword had pinned Steven’s sword to the floor, digging its tip into the soil.
Steven was baffled, and he looked up at Alice, who smirked.

“You have great conviction, but what you lack is the power to carry it out.” She said and lifted her sword. “If this were a real battle then you’d have been dead by now.” She waved her swords around him and, with serious eyes, roamed through his body, “Your neck, your arms, and your legs, all cut off.”
Her words, as well as her gaze, sent chills down Steven’s spine.
‘What was that just now?’ he touched his neck. ‘I felt the terror of actually losing my neck and limb.’ he gulped, his heart pounding heavily as he broke out in a cold sweat. His throat was dry.
“Alice, don’t frighten your classmate.” Philip nagged once more and she raised her hands in defense while smiling.
“I was just telling the truth.” She said and titled her head. “So, does this count as my win?”
“Yeah, yeah,” he waved her away and sighed. “Go do what you want.”
Alice dropped the sword and grabbed Leo’s arm.
“Let’s go slack off in a corner.” She said.
Steven didn’t move from his position. That defeat was too clean and quick. It was embarrassing. And yet… He looked up at Alice as she left… He couldn’t even feel embarrassed because she was not exactly the kind of person the likes of him or anyone in their class could beat.
“It seems I still have a lot to learn,” he exclaimed, picking up his sword that had been buried in the soil. He stared at his reflection in his blade and closed his eyes. “Much much more.”
At the end of the day, Micheal met up with Alice just before they left school to disclose his findings of the assassin.
They met in one of the classrooms where it was just the two of them. Leo stood outside as if keeping watch, but he just didn’t want to interrupt their little meet-up.
There, Micheal told her what he had found.
His method was quick and efficient so he was able to find out, without much effort, that the assassin was sent by Elizabeth’s father. Mr Hart.
“Ah, it seems that brat just couldn’t handle her defeat.” She punched her fist. “Anyway, thanks. As for your reward, I’ll give it to you another time.” She said. “I’ve gotta get home now.”
“Alice, wait,” he said and she paused, turning to him.
What did he have to say?
He stared at her and wondered if she was not afraid. Sure, she was powerful, but they could get more and more assassins after her, and her life, as well as the lives of the people around her, would be in danger.
“Alice, if death suddenly comes knocking on your door, telling you it’s time to go, what would be your response?” Micheal asked and Alice tilted her head.
“You’re saying a lot of weird things these days,” she said and sighed. “Okay, let’s see. What would I tell that crazy piece of shit?” She asked, which startled him.
Did she hear him at all?
“Alice, I’m talking about death.” He said and she looked at him plainly.
“Yeah, I know. Death is a bastard that shows up whenever it wants.” She said. “If it shows up and knocks on my door,” she showed her fist. “I’ll beat it up till it crawls back to where it came from. It can tell whoever sent it that I’m not ready yet, and I’ll be ready when I’m ready.”
Micheal stared in shock. No, he was in awe. If anyone listened to her, they would think she had gone mad but she was serious.
She planned to beat up death. Was that even possible? She was only human, after all.
A chuckle escaped his lips and he said,
“You mesmerize me each time I listen to your views.”
