Chapter 386: Feelings, huh?
Alice finally got the opportunity to take a nap. She got to their class and found it empty. She contacted Leo and told him she was heading to the classroom and he said he’d be there soon.
The classroom was quite a distance from where she left him so he had to keep up with her if he didn’t want to suddenly disintegrate.
By the time he got to the class, he found Alice in her seat with her head on the pink pillow and snoozing like a baby.
It hadn’t even been five minutes and she was so deep in her sleep. Since she knew she had nothing else to do, she let herself go.
“What will I do with you?” He asked and sat down where he would normally sit during classes.
He dropped his hand on Alice’s head and stroked softly.
She had the fate of the world on her shoulders, and though sometimes it burdened her heart, most times she just liked to live freely in the calm period, enjoying the moment before the storm finally came.
She was the epitome of freedom, not letting her predestined fate define her actions.
“There you are!” Diane’s loud voice echoed in the class as she slid the door open. “Ah, I knew it. It’s a good thing I followed Leo.”
Leo looked at Diane and then at Alice who had not flinched one bit from Diane’s echo.
“Whoa, is she asleep already?” Diane asked. “That was quick,” she took a seat in front of them and poked Alice’s cheek but even that did not get her to move. “I guess she wasn’t joking when she said she needed to catch some sleep.” She laughed. “Look at her, she’s adorable.”
“I guess she is.” Leo said and then Diane’s eyes glinted.
“So, what’s your relationship?” She asked, but Leo did not give an answer. “You know, Alice talked about you like you were her lover or something. Though, from what I heard, you two aren’t in ‘that’ kind of relationship but still… She cares about you and you care about her. If I were you, I’d take that chance and date her.”
“Does the act of care warrant a relationship?” Leo asked her.
“It’s only the basis.” Diane answered. “You need care to start the foundation of a relationship. If both of you have each other’s interests at heart then you’ve started laying the bricks. After that, you’d ask each other if you can see yourself spending time together for the rest of your lives. That’s the roof. And trust me, not many people think about that when looking for a boyfriend or girlfriend. They mostly only think about that when their end goal is marriage.”
“I see.” Leo muttered and then glanced at Alice. ‘Do humans care about such things a lot? Alice is just a different breed who doesn’t put any thought into romance.’ he thought and chuckled lightly. ‘How cute.’
“Wait, did you just think of Alice being cute?” Diane asked, interpreting his chuckle however she saw fit?
He glanced at her and she said,
“You did, didn’t you? I mean, she is cute but you can’t tell me you have no feelings for her when you keep thinking of her cute sides.”
“Feelings, huh?” Leo dropped his chin on his palm for support. “I don’t think that’s the case.” He said. “I do care for her and see her best interest in mind, but our relationship can never take that turn, and we… Can’t be together forever. As much as I’d like to make it possible, it just can’t happen.”
Diane felt the heaviness of his words and could tell he was being sincere, not for any selfish reasons but for how things were going to unfold.
“Hm, in that case, can you promise me something?”
“I don’t think you and I are close enough to be keeping promises.” Leo said.
“Oh, fuck it. I just need you to assure me of something and I’ll be at ease. It’s a pity you guys can’t date but it’s also alright.” She said and Leo gave it a thought.
“Alright, what is it?”
“Promise me that when the time comes for you to leave, you won’t leave her in tears.” He said and Leo felt his existence shake.
It was weird. He placed his hand on his heart and felt his heart beating. It wasn’t a real heart and was sorta like his essence but it was beating so fast that one could be convinced that he was indeed human.
And yet… He could not explain his own reaction.
“Come on, just promise me and I’ll be at ease.” Diane said. “Alice and I weren’t exactly the best of friends but at least we had each other’s presence to keep our minds sane for the longest time.” She looked away. “And even if we were bound to betray each other at some point, we still had each other in mind.” She raised her gaze and stared at Leo with a determined mind. “I’m not asking you to be her forever boy or love her with all your heart. All I ask is that you leave peacefully. Alice has never cried once to my knowledge, but I feel like if it were you…” She felt her chest tighten. “If she were to lose you, she would definitely break down.”
Leo fell silent. This request sounded so simple coming from Diane but it wasn’t simple at all.

No matter how he planned to leave, there was no way Alice would be alright, but he wasn’t sure about the tears part. She didn’t have a heart that was so weak to the point she would tear up out of nowhere.
But… Even then.
“I’m sorry.” He said. “As much as I wish that were the case, I know my departure will not be under normal circumstances, so I cannot guarantee that I’ll leave her with a smile.”
“Haa, it was worth the try.” Diane said and rested her back on the chair. “But it seems you do care for her way more than I thought. I don’t know what the future holds but I do hope things work out somehow.”
Leo’s face fell slowly, and he looked at Alice, who was still snoozing away. It was such a pity.
“Yes, me too.”
