Chapter 400: Do you… have a picture?
(Woohoo, we’re finally at 400 chapters. I feel so emotional. This is my first time getting so far within a single novel. It’s all thanks to the readers who endlessly motivate me. Thank you so much.)
Adolf looked at the phone with a darkened expression and then at Alice.
“I’ll make sure to ‘punish’ them thoroughly,” he said, accepting the phone from her.
Alice clasped her hands together in delight as she smiled brightly.
“Great. I’m counting on you.”
It felt like such a hassle to take care of Elizabeth Hart and her father by herself, so she would have the chairman do it for her.
And as for that demon… She just wanted to watch and see what it would do once his supporter was gone.
Adolf watched Alice smile and then patted her head. She reminded him so much of someone that it made his heart melt and at the same time ache in pain.
Where was she now? What was she doing? No, was she even still alive? The apocalypse came at an unexpected time, and he heard… A gate had opened up next to where she used to live.
He tried to find her. He did all that he could, regretting his decision and beating himself up for the mistake he made, but… He could only live with the regret for the rest of his life and see her in the face of this child.
“Gramps?” Alice called, wondering what he was thinking so hard and deeply with that longing gaze in his eyes. “Are you okay?” She asked, but he closed his eyes and took his hand down.
He wasn’t okay. He had done something terrible. But…
“I’m fine, dear.” He said. “You just… Remind me of my daughter, that’s all.”
Alice went silent. Miss Stella said the same thing. She said she reminded her of her sister but… Who exactly was this woman? And what part of her did she resemble so much that the two of them got so emotional?
“Well, I’m sure she was very pretty.” She said. “Do you… Have a picture? I’d really like to see what she looked like.”
Adolf looked away, shaking his head.
“Unfortunately, I don’t possess a picture of her here.” He didn’t have a single picture of her, even, and over the years, he was scared that he would gradually begin to forget what his own daughter looked like.
He had forgotten the sparkle that used to be in her eyes each time she smiled. How much her face glowed, but he was reminded of all that with a single glance at Alice.
“Well, that’s too bad.” Alice said. “I would’ve really liked to see her.”
Adolf watched her and mumbled,
“Thank you,”
Alice didn’t know why he thanked her, but she was glad she could be of help.
“By the way, Gramps. Can you trust me?” She asked, her expression suddenly turning serious.
“On what?”
“I don’t plan to go easy on anyone once we get there, and I… I’ll go to the extreme to get what I want, so please…” Her eyes glowed in determination. “Just trust me.”
They got to the headquarters, and as Alice stepped foot into the council hall, her eyes scanned through everything and everyone.
‘Hm, it looks just as I remembered.’ She thought. ‘But,’ her gaze travelled through the dark top floor where she could hardly see the faces of the people who were sitting there, and then down to the floor she was standing on.
The semi-round table in front of her had faces she was mostly familiar with, even though one familiar face was missing.
In any case, there were a bunch of unfamiliar faces on the top floor, and they seemed pretty powerful with energy levels that could be slightly compared to Adolf’s, but not exactly at his level.
‘I didn’t see these people the last time.’ She thought. The faces she was a bit familiar with stood behind the powerful, unfamiliar faces, making her wonder if those were their bosses.

Well, it would make sense if they went to get their bosses after they failed to give her their name cards the last time she was there. And then there were more important issues to talk about, so the representatives couldn’t handle all of it.
Then, there were the people sitting at the semi-round table. Aside from the guild masters, there were the ‘Elders’.
‘These people,’ Alice thought. ‘Are they the old foggies who are always dissatisfied with me?’ she wondered, but she would only get an answer to that question when the meeting began.
“Alice,” Adolf called. “Let’s go in and take a seat.”
“Yes,”
He made his way to the head of the table, and Alice followed.
All eyes were on them.
Alice walked right next to Adolf, the chairman, with her head held high and not faltering one bit, even though the people there were trying to pressure her with their presence.
For Alice, it was nothing more than steam buns trying to pressure her with their hotness so she wouldn’t eat them. But it was fertile. She would still eat them no matter how hot they were.
Speaking of… She hadn’t had steamed buns since the last time Devon surprised her with Chinese takeouts for her job well done in learning the first footwork of his sword style.
‘I should probably try it out on our way back.’ She thought, and Leo interrupted her thoughts.
*Snap out of it. We’re here on business.* He said, and she flinched.
‘What are you doing in my head?’
*I need to know what ‘bright ideas’ you’re cooking up in your head. And if it’s a bad idea, then I’ll warn you before you let it slip from your lips.* He said, and she rolled her eyes.
He could do whatever.
Leo walked behind them, and when Alice had taken a seat, he stood behind her, right next to Marcus, who was behind the chairman, as though he were a bodyguard.
Alice had taken the seat that represented the second strongest in their midst, and while many grumbled, some just decided to let it slide with the thought that the chairman was simply pampering her, so he made her seat next to her.
“I believe we’re all here.” The chairman spoke up.
His eyes scanned through swiftly.
From the guildmasters of the four powerful guilds, no longer five as the Rose Guild had fallen, to the S-class awakeneds known in their country and a few from other countries, to the leaders of the awakened agencies all over the world, and to the elders of the association sitting at his left and right side… He confirmed that everyone was present.
“Then, let the meeting begin.”
