Chapter 45: Harsh remarks Chapter 45: Harsh remarks Alice and Mark got into the car that had been prepared for their transportation.
It was a comfortable car and it was probably the first time Alice was entering one.
The only cars she had ever got into all her life were, first, the taxis she took with her mom as a kid.
They were taking a taxi ride to a destination her mother refused to disclose.
She said something about it being a surprise.
But then the gates appeared and everywhere broke.
Then, there was the truck that transported homeless kids like her, after the apocalypse broke out, taking them out to be sold.
Kids like her, folded up and cried as they had just lost their parents and had no one to console them.
She was one of them.
A naive, stupid crying kid who couldn’t stop asking to go home.
As if she even had a home to return to.
Then, she was tied up and placed in the trunk of a car for a five-hour trip.
It was hot, suffocating and uncomfortable.
They gave her pills so she would pass out but for some reason, the pills didn’t work.
She was so scared that she peed on herself the first time and then got a good beating once they got to their destination.
That had happened twice.
Not the pee part but…
Getting transported in the trunk of a car to God knows where.
And so, she wasn’t very fond of cars.
She looked through the window.
Well, she couldn’t say she had a pleasant life growing up.
But…
She placed her elbow on the door and dropped her chin on her palm…
She survived.
Mark watched her as she gazed out the window with no vivid expression on her face.
Then, she shut her eyes and sighed.
Alfred was in the car with them.
The back seat was rather spacious so the three of them could stay there and not worry about touching knees.
He cleared his throat, pushing up the rim of his glasses and Alice opened her eyes, rolling them back to him.
“We’re almost there.” He announced and Alice dropped her hand from the door.

“Already?” She looked forward and watched through the windshield as they approached what looked like a glowing blue gate, but it wasn’t a monster gate…
It was a transportation gate.
After gates spawned for years, there were instances of gates staying intact even after killing the boss.
They were called sustainable gates.
Those gates were thus used as portals, or you could say easy transportation means, allowing one to go anywhere in the world in minutes.
How is that possible?
You may wonder.
Because gates usually don’t have tails.
They spawn up here, and that may very well be their only entrance and exit, but these sustainable gates, as if trying to save its inhabitants, would open up another gateway somewhere around the world, allowing them to escape before being eradicated.
Very durable means of transportation, once the monsters have been wiped out completely.
And the interior of the dungeon can be cultivated into something else.
Something more useful for human evolution.
But the biggest hurdle scientists were facing was if they could somehow find a way to move the gate from its spawned location to a more convenient place.
Because if such a gate suddenly spawned up in the middle of a public expressway then that environment would be out of use, and only government and awakened’s agency would be able to access that location.
Alice watched as they passed a checkpoint, which probably regulated the use of the transportation gate.
The man at the checkpoint stopped the car and verified the identity of the man behind the wheel.
He saluted like one would do to a high-ranking military officer before giving the signal to raise the bars and allow the car through.
Alice stuck her head out the window and suddenly stuck out her tongue at him, giving him the funny weird face and leaving him lost in confusion.
She laughed and sat back, satisfied.
She always wanted to do that to an officer in charge.
She never got the chance to do it in the past because she had to stay incognito and not get herself in trouble.
But who was going to get her into trouble when she was driving in the car he just saluted at?
‘That was so fulfilling.’ she thought.
“Miss Alice,” Mark asked and she turned he’d head to find them both looking at her, speechless.
“Please refrain from acting weird.” He said, shaking his head.
“Hm, will I really get in trouble?” She asked.
“The people you’re going to stand before consist of the strongest humans on the entire planet.” He said.
“If you do something like this and get yourself in trouble, then…” “Ah, right.” Alice sat upright.
“Courtesy.
Courtesy.” She said, looking eagerly at him.
“Will that do?” “Ahem,” Alfred cleared his throat and looked at her with eyes that weren’t too appealing.
If anything, he felt like he was babysitting a teenager and he didn’t like it.
“Miss Alice,” he called, rather coldly, “…you are about to stand before the greatest beings in our world.
Will you really act like you’re some kid?” “Hm, I think-” “That attitude of yours,” he interrupted her.
“…
May just land you in your grave.
You might’ve done something remarkable like clear an immeasurable red gate, which means that we don’t know of, but that doesn’t mean you can act however you wish.
In front of the greatest hands, the hands that have protected our world for years, you are nothing more than a single peanut.” ‘Ouch.’ Alice thought.
‘That…
That’s actually harsh, not that it hurts, haha.’ Mark did not like the way Alfred spoke to Alice and decided to speak up.
“Isn’t that too harsh?
She didn’t do anything wrong and…” “Mark Davidson,” Alfred called coldly, shutting him up right away.
“Do know that you were not summoned, and your being here does not mean anything.
If you want to continue on this journey then know your place.” He said and sighed, placing the tip of his fingers on his forehead and shaking his head.
“Seriously, you wanna treat her like she’s a kid, spoil her and condone her childishness.” “But she is a kid.” Mark said.
“She’s no more than 17.” “Hah, do you even hear yourself?
Would a kid really lie about being an S-class awakened?” Alfred asked, looking fed up with the nonsense he had to put up with.
“She may be 17 but she definitely has the mentality of a selfish adult.
Seriously, is this how you’ve been taking care of the criminal this whole time?
You’re an A-class combat awakened, yet you have no talent, and that’s why you were stuck at the level of jailer.
Since that’s the only thing you are good at, you should know people aren’t what they portray themselves as.
They are evil, and you never know; she could be too.
So, shut your mouth and don’t spoil her anymore.” “Stop the car!” Alice suddenly demanded.
