Chapter 57: Alice, what exactly are you scared of?
Chapter 57: Alice, what exactly are you scared of?
“Miss Alice, on behalf of our country- no.
On behalf of the world and all the living people in it, I would like to thank you, for saving humanity.” Everyone stared at the chairman shocked.
What was he doing?
But his actions made them realize something.
Though they could not believe what they could not see, they couldn’t deny the fact that Alice had indeed taken care of an unforeseen force.
A force that the entire world had never seen before…
And with no casualties.
Even with all the S-class awakeneds combined, there was no way to fantom that there would be no casualties due to the break of such a gate.
So…
What she did was save the world and their lives.
They suddenly decided to follow the Chairman’s actions and bowed as well.
But not all of them though.
People like Su Feng did not bow their heads and Fredrick too.
He simply threw his face away, refusing to bow to a little girl such as herself.
Alice, seeing this, freaked out.
She suddenly ran to hide behind Devon and Mark.
She used them as a shield and buried her face.
“What’s wrong?” Mark asked but she shook her head, refusing to speak.
She couldn’t take it.
No, she never imagined it.
She never imagined getting thanked and in such a manner as well.
No one had ever thanked her.
No one.
So this excessive show of appreciation just made her feel uncomfortable.
In fact, it made her scared.
*Are you okay?* Leo asked.
‘No, it’s weird.’ she thought, clenching harder on their shirts.
‘They’re scaring me.’ After getting trained into the obedient and capable ‘dog’ she became, Alice never had anything to be scared of.

She never thought there would be anything to scare her aside from a monster attack.
After all, she was weak so facing a monster that you know fully well that you couldn’t beat was one thing that ignited fear, even in the heart of a fearless man.
After facing the red wolf and the herd of minotaurs, she recognized fear all too well.
But why did this fear feel more profound than the others?
Her heart was beating hard against her chest, making her uncomfortable and a bit difficult to breathe.
What was happening to her?
Just why was she so scared?
*Alice, what exactly are you scared of?* Leo asked.
He didn’t really remember Alice getting scared of appreciation when he read through her memories in her other life before rewinding the time.
Oh, wait.
He realized that there was no one to thank her.
After she became an awakened, the second calamity had already begun and she did not really indulge in heroic activities.
Though she killed every monster in sight, according to her own strength, and grew stronger without any help, she didn’t receive any appreciation.
Everyone died, slowly and gradually.
So, she was alone.
So, he still couldn’t tell why she was scared.
*Alice, there’s no need to be scared.* He said.
*Mark thanked you before, remember?
Was it scary then?* ‘No, but…
That’s because it was him.
But these people that I don’t know are bowing their heads at me.
I…
I don’t feel comfortable.’ Yeah, she didn’t feel this scared when Mark thanked her for saving them after the Hydra attacked but for some reason, she was feeling uneasy.
It wasn’t the bowing that made her this uneasy, it was their intentions.
*So, are you scared that they’re thanking you or because their intentions are unknown?* ‘I don’t know.
I don’t know.’ she shook her head.
‘It just suddenly makes me feel uneasy.
I can’t explain it.’ Alice had a bad feeling creeping into her heart.
She thought she might’ve been scared of their appreciation but it was more than that.
It was like a bad feeling.
A feeling telling her that nothing good will come out from hearing their ‘thank you’.
“Miss Alice, why are you hiding?” Devon asked and Alice looked up at him.
She bit her lip and furrowed her eyebrows.
“I…
I’m not hiding.” She said, but her actions differed from her words.
His eyes rolled down at her hand clutching the back of his shirt to the point that it would rip.
If she wasn’t hiding then what was she doing?
“Are they scaring you?” Mark suddenly asked but she denied it immediately.
“No way.” She snapped but that outburst had been completely unnecessary as it made them believe something was wrong with her.
“I just…
I’m feeling tired.” She said and yawned.
“Yes, that’s it.
I want to hurry up and leave so I can catch some sleep.” She said and peeked at the Chairman, who had raised his head, wondering what was going on with her.
The others had also raised their head but that uneasy feeling did not go away so easily.
And then, Su Feng scoffed.
“Hah, just look at her hide.
She’s definitely scared of something.” He said.
“This girl can get scared of something so small, how do you expect me to believe she’s as extraordinary as you say?” Alice rolled her eyes.
She had lost her composure for a moment but the only thing she thought of was how to hide and not look at so many people bowing at her.
“Yes, yes.
Don’t believe it.
Can someone hand him a trophy?” Everyone seemed to find her words funny and they laughed, leaving Su Feng humiliated.
The chairman turned to Alice and asked, “Miss Alice, did my actions make you so uncomfortable that you decided to hide?” Alice looked at him for a second and then nodded.
“Ah, then I apologize.
I just wanted to show my sincerest appreciation.” “Ah, don’t do things like that, gramps.” Alice said and suddenly smirked.
“But if you want to show your appreciation, you could always invite me to, not just dinner, but lunch as well.
I’ll dry your pockets.
Is that okay?” The chairman laughed.
“Then I’ll take that as a challenge.
Let’s see if you can indeed dry my pocket.” “You got yourself a deal.” She gave him a thumbs up, smiling.
But then, she felt her headache like it was splitting in two.
“Gahh!” She grabbed her head.
“Alice, what’s wrong?” Mark asked but she felt nothing but pain crushing her brain.
*Alice, take deep breaths.* Leo said as if he knew exactly what was going on.
*Take deep breaths.
Deep breaths.* Mark, looking in horror as Alice squirmed in pain yelled out, “Is there a healer?
Please get her a healer.” “No,” Alice yelled.
“Just…
Leave it.
I…
Gahh, I’m fine.” She yelled but she was far from fine.
Could they really do nothing but watch her be in pain?
Then, it stopped.
The pain stopped and she started panting, sweat dripping down her forehead and her chin.
“I’m okay.” She said, still panting.
“I’m okay.” The council watched, wondering what could possibly be going on.
Not knowing what was going on was disturbing and made them anxious.
Alice gritted her teeth as a memory flashed through her head.
The memory that was trying to occupy her mind, the memory of the other life she lived finally, was the reason why she felt so uneasy receiving appreciation like that.
She raised her head, revealing her bloody tears.
“Ah, this shit is crazy.” She said out loud.
