- Chapter 99 - Chapter 99 He was an easy prey
Chapter 99: He was an easy prey Chapter 99: He was an easy prey Devon wasted no time and teleported to the top of the building.
“Miss Alice, are you…?” He froze up and turned his gaze.
Alice glanced at him, who stared in shock at the red gate.
“What is this?” He asked.
“Your one and only red gate.” She announced, quite relaxed at the situation.
She already knew what was going on and that the monsters that would come out of that gate weren’t going to be simple.
But she was still calm since fretting would get her nowhere.
“Miss Alice,” Devon called.
“I admire your conviction at wanting to uproot the problem from the source but I will not let you go into that gate recklessly as you did before, just because you want to save everyone.” Alice tilted her head, looking at him with an expression that asked, ‘What the hell are you talking about?
Who wants to save who?’ *Pft, he thinks you came up here because you felt the gate.* ‘Tut, they should stop looking at me like I’m some hero.’ She thought, throwing her gaze away.
‘I just wanted to get away.’ Devon wondered if she became annoyed that he was trying to get in her way, but honestly, that wasn’t it.
He had to stop misunderstanding her actions.
“Alice,” Mark called and they both turned to see him landing on the roof.
He had jumped.
Well, he was still an A-class awakened whether useless or not.
He raised his head and his gaze fell on the red gate, causing memories of the past to flash through his mind.
How the people around him died, trying to make use of their own powers to either save themselves or defeat the monster while he stood frozen in a corner and watched it all happen.
Ah, -he clenched his fists and grinded his teeth- Why did it have to be a red gate?
How many times was this now?
How many times did he have to stand in front of this beautiful yet deadly gate and not be able to do anything worthwhile?
“Okay, what do you two plan to do now that you’re up here?” She asked.
“You’re just going to get in my way so-” “I won’t get in your way.” Mark immediately claimed, looking at her with a serious and determined look in his eyes.
“I know I won’t be of much help but I can’t stand by and watch you go into a red gate for the second time.
I…
Will stand by your side.” Mark asked himself this question, ‘What would I do if Alice needed my powers?’ Would he run away like he always did in the past or would he face off the monster even when knowing he would lose?
Mark’s past.
Before becoming an awakened, he was a student.
A high school student who worked numerous odd jobs just to provide for himself and come up with money to treat his ailing grandmother.
It was hard.
And at that point, the apocalypse had already reduced the world by a lot.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
It had been two years.
They were lucky to have survived.
Mark was an indifferent guy.
He was indifferent to anything that had nothing to do with him.
He went about his everyday life with a neutral expression, working, working, studying, and working.
That was his life.
He took care of his sick grandmother a lot because, in the world, she was all he had.
He thought his life would just continue like that, even with all the gate drama surrounding him.
But it didn’t.
He came across a red gate for the first time in his life and at that time, the law of gate calls for a reward money had been made.
He was glad that with this, he would be able to get better treatment for his grandmother, so he made the call.
While waiting for the agency, a group of students approached.
Of course, they wanted to claim the rights that they found the gate first but Mark refused to back down.
He stood in front of the beautiful red gate and said, “If you want to create trouble.
Then, come at me.
But be careful; you might slip and jump in by ‘accident’.” He made his intentions clear, but he had no idea this group of schoolmates was newly awakened.
They showed off their flashy and weak skills.
They provoked and threatened Mark, who had no choice but to step aside.
When faced with an awakened, an ordinary human stood no chance so he gave up easily.
It wasn’t worth it, he told himself.
But the kids did not want to let him go so easily.
But just then, there was a gate break.
The agency did not arrive on time to manage the situation and those cocky kids thought they could take on the situation on their own, having no idea how dangerous a red gate was.
Mark stepped aside.
He was scared.
The first time he came across a gate, he came across a red gate.
And the first time he came across one, he came across a monster that looked like a wolf.
It wasn’t the red wolf but white.
It looked…
Beautiful but that beautiful white fur got dyed red in the blood of the kids who tried to get ahead of themselves.
They died while he hid away.
He had no power, no strength and no reason to fight either.
He could just walk away and let the agency handle it when they got there.
Yes, that was it.
Yet…
His legs were frozen.
He was so shaken by the sight that he couldn’t escape.
Then, he felt the breathing of the wolf behind him.
It didn’t attack but mocked this boy who held no hostility and only had fears.
He was an easy prey.
Mark turned slowly and gazed at his reflection in the eyes of the white wolf that was growling softly.
He could see himself clearly and he could also see himself dying any moment, so why not enjoy the beauty while he still could?
He clenched the handle of his bag.
‘Grandma, it seems I’ll end up going before you.’ he thought.
If he died there, his grandmother would have no one to take care of her.
No one to provide money for her treatment.
She would definitely die.
At least, that was better than him surviving this with a missing limb or two.
Funny how he feared having to take care of his disabled self and his sick grandmother than this treacherous monster in front of him.
But just then, he got a notification.
A blue screen flashed in front of him, blocking his view of his reflection in the wolf’s deadly eyes.
*Congratulations, you have met the conditions to become an awakened.
Fight fear with fear.
You have acquired the title, The Unhinged King.
The one who can face any tribulation with actions unknown.* The unhinged king?
Did that mean he was mentally unstable?
Why call him unhinged?
He could think of a lot of things to describe himself but unhinged?
Where did that come from?
( When you stand in front of a monster that just killed a bunch of your school mates and not pee on your pants, what do you call that?
Oh, what was the word again?
Crazy!
I hate to break it to ya, but…
You’re totally unhinged) Anyway, he had never heard of awakeneds having titles.
Yet, he was awakened with a title.
Did that mean he was special?
Well, it didn’t matter.
He had no skills.
At least, no unlocked skills.
His stats were relatively high.
He was an A-class awakened but even that did not thrill him.
