Chapter 280: The future is a double-edged sword; some will find happiness, others sorrow
The subway car felt somewhat oppressive. Announcements about arriving and upcoming stations intermittently broke through the murmur.
Office workers in suits made agitated phone calls on this weekend day.
Young couples, clearly students, chatted sweetly about where to go next for fun.
There were also families, looking harmonious, patiently answering the curious questions of their children. And then there were middle-aged men and women with faces clouded by worry, perhaps troubled by the trivialities of life.
Sam took all this in with a sweeping glance. But now, more than the diverse tapestry of human life around him, he found himself needing to focus on something—or rather, someone—else. Like the woman in his arms.
Zoe was like a warm piece of cake. Her touch was unimaginably soft and fragrant, dizzyingly intoxicating. It seemed that no man could hold her and remain unaffected.
Even the most genteel man might shed his facade and transform into a beast filled with desire in her presence.
Sam felt uncomfortably constrained. If this weren’t a subway, if the surrounding noise weren’t so overwhelming, he might have given in to the urge to make love to Zoe again.
But this was a subway! There were far too many people around, and he wasn’t ready to risk a social death by being discovered in such a compromising situation.
All Sam could do was try his best to restrain himself and hold Zoe a bit tighter.
“…Stop moving, Zoe, we’re on the subway,” he whispered, his voice low, his face a mask of forced calm.
Despite his efforts, whispers still reached their ears.
“Wow… that woman is really attractive, looks quite sexy. And she’s getting so cozy with a guy who looks barely legal?”
“Damn… why do I have to witness this on the subway?”
Given their striking appearances and demeanor, it was natural that they attracted attention. This only made Sam’s nerves stretch tauter. He certainly wasn’t into exhibitionism.
Yet, Zoe seemed to revel in the moment.
“What’s wrong with doing it on the subway? I think it’s exciting… Don’t you find it thrilling?” she said with a mischievous grin, like a siren luring mortals to their doom, tempting a hero to fall from grace.
Her breath was warm and moist against Sam’s neck, leaving a lingering sensation that was almost tangible.
Sam had to tilt his head back slightly, seeking fresher air to regain some semblance of reason. “Sure, everyone needs a thrill now and then, but not at the cost of everything… Calm down.”
Zoe just smiled.
She withdrew her arms, one hand gently wrapping around Sam’s neck while the other daringly slipped towards his waistband.
“But what if… I really don’t care about the consequences? What if I want to give you a truly unique experience?”
“This…”
[Seaview Park station, Seaview Park station…]
Finally, the announcement came like a lifeline.
“Ah… what a pity,” Zoe remarked.
Sam could finally step back, glaring at her with annoyance. “You think it’s a pity? How am I supposed to ever go out with you again if you keep this up?”
Zoe seemed utterly fearless as she looked at Sam with a smile. “Then we’ll just have to stay in every day, which isn’t so bad, right?”
Sam coughed.
“Which way to the exit again?”

“This way~”
Zoe, acting as if nothing had happened, linked her arm with Sam’s and headed towards the exit. They moved freely among the crowd.
Seaview Park was bustling with people, from couples with children to hand-holding lovers, all present in abundance. The park itself exuded a vibe of freshness and trendiness.
Not only were there benches and seats themed around Anime Culture, but even the street lamps were crafted into unique designs. Cute signs and directions were everywhere, and numerous vendors were nearby.
“Sam, what flavor of coffee do you like?” Zoe asked with a smile.
Sam pondered for a moment. “It’s all good, I’m not picky about food.”
“Okay… I think I see it, the coffee shop is just over there.”
Zoe walked to the coffee shop, bought two cups of coffee, and then she and Sam sipped their drinks as they walked up to a higher point in Seaview Park. The area was bustling with people taking photos, not just because the scenery was beautiful, but also because from the fence, one could easily see the vast sea surrounding Kuhang.
Under the sunlight.
The deep blue sea shimmered with a layer of reflective golden light.
The gentle undulation of the waves, like sheets of gold leaf flipping over, was utterly soothing.
The breeze from the sea wasn’t particularly remarkable, but in such weather, it added a sense of ease and distance.
Leaning on the fence, coffee in hand, Zoe looked somewhat reflective.
“I used to come here with my young brother. It wasn’t like this back then. He was very young at the time and told me: ‘One day, I’ll be a captain, and I’ll take you sailing around the world…'”
Memories are precious because they house many important people.
Without those people, those events, memories would be like blank pages without words.
But it’s also because of these people, these events, that memories can be painful, filled with regret.
Sam spoke softly, “The world is always changing. The promises we make, the wishes we utter, you never know when they’ll come true or become void, or even if we might forget them ourselves. Don’t be too sad; this is a new life now.”
Zoe smiled and shook her head.
“Actually, by now, there’s not much sadness left. It’s more of a reflection, always making me think about how unpredictable life is, how suddenly accidents can happen, how the people we cherish can leave us. Sam, does that kind of thing scare you?”
Sam really wanted to say that if all these female leads could just get along, he wouldn’t have a single worry.
But that pressure still weighed heavily on Sam’s heart.
The thought that he was always at risk of an accident, uncertain about whose hands might end his life, was haunting.
What would his parents’ expressions be if such a thing really happened? What would Ava feel?
It seemed these things were too complex to simply touch; once touched, they became a field of thorns, shocking to behold.
Not even the sea breeze could lighten such worries.
Sam spoke softly, “Don’t think too much. No one can foresee the future, which seems like a weakness, but perhaps it’s the creator’s greatest mercy to mankind.”
“Why say that? Wouldn’t knowing what will happen in the future be good… to avoid many unnecessary risks…”
Zoe seemed not to understand.
Sam shook his head, watching the woman’s long hair fluttering in the wind.
“If we knew the future, many things now would become meaningless. Knowing our end, what would we strive for? Losing many unexpected surprises, why then look forward to tomorrow? The future is a double-edged sword; some will find happiness, others sorrow. But the fair thing is that our final outcome is to vanish.”
“You sound so mature… Sam, at such a young age, you seem more open-minded than me, it’s embarrassing.”
Zoe spoke softly, involuntarily leaning closer to Sam.
The warmth of their bodies touching, against the cold sea breeze.
It felt as if the whole world had narrowed down to just these two beings who could lean on each other.
In this moment, Sam didn’t avoid or resist, simply letting Zoe lean on him, showing a slight vulnerability.
“It’s not really that, just that with too much idle time, one tends to think about all sorts of things. Don’t you think I’m just pretending to be wise, forcing melancholy into my words?”
Zoe said with a smile, “How could that be? I don’t get that vibe from you at all. I’ve never believed that maturity is closely linked to age. The more experiences one has, the more mature they become, and… I like this Sam, the way you are, very reliable. I really want to entrust everything to you…”
Whether that last statement was true or not, it’s true that everyone has their moments of weakness.
Sam looked out at the vast expanse of the sea, listening to the countless noisy sounds around him.
“Zoe, you can relax a bit. I feel like sometimes people live too strenuously because they like to make things difficult for themselves.”
“Do you ever make things difficult for yourself, Sam?”
“Me?”
Sam looked at her curiously.
Zoe nodded, her eyes slightly wavering under the sunlight, their luster touching.
“I don’t know why, but I always feel like Sam has many unspeakable secrets, many things too hard to mention. The exhaustion from fighting for something, I… actually feel very sorry for you.”
Sam of course knew about his own emotions and secrets.
But he hadn’t expected her to pinpoint them so accurately.
Apart from those truths, her description was spot on.
“It’s okay, life isn’t easy for anyone, Zoe, you included.”
Sam still didn’t open up about his own difficulties.
After all, what’s the use in speaking them? They’re hard to understand, right?
Speaking them out might also be hard for others to believe. He wouldn’t dare say these things to Angel, for instance. She would definitely think Sam was just making excuses to justify creating a harem.
Zoe glanced at Sam’s handsome profile.
His gaze was fixed on the distant sea, and there was always so much beauty to feel around him—hope, youth, morning dew, and stars.
Using any beautiful thing to describe Sam wouldn’t be an exaggeration, hence the uncontrollable desire to possess him…
The moment you let go, he might slip away.
And yet, it’s hard to be content with sharing him with others.
Such a contradiction.
As she thought this, Zoe reached out on her own accord and grasped Sam’s slender hand, their fingers interlocking tightly.
Sam turned to look at Zoe.
Zoe said softly, “It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it. Just come back to me when you’re feeling down or tired. Whatever the emotion, I’ll try my best to absorb it completely, so don’t be shy.”
Sam chuckled wryly.
He was just about to say something in response.
But then, from behind…
“Uh… Sam?”
Sam and Zoe both turned around in surprise.
They saw two striking figures standing behind them, their hands still intertwined.
The expressions on the faces of these two figures were indescribable.
It was as if they were judges.
Or like the final gavel when catching a criminal.
“It really is you… Nice, very nice.”
