Chapter 295: How do you plan to handle the other women in your life?
Without surprise, Sam got into the car.
He had thought Angel’s text was a joke, but now it seemed she wasn’t kidding at all.
Even Celeste was there.
Despite her usually gentle smile, nobody wanted to experience her anger. Everyone knew that when this woman showed any emotion other than her smile, things could get pretty nasty.
When Sam got into the car, he noticed something slightly awkward.
The issue was with the seating.
Since Angel was also in the backseat and Elowen was driving, it would have been normal for him and Angel to sit together, given their openly acknowledged relationship.
But since he was the last one to get in, he naturally ended up sitting on the outer side, with Celeste in the middle.
Sam just glanced briefly and then, pretending nothing was amiss, smiled and said, “Why, did Godmother make a special trip here?”
The car slowly started moving, with Elowen focused intently on driving, her gaze never shifting to the back, like a precision-operated robot.
Celeste, dressed in a high-quality red coat, exuded an air of refined elegance. Of course, it wasn’t the flashy kind of elegance; her refinement didn’t require close observation to be appreciated.
Her makeup was subtle.
Her lips were a bright red, her face delicate, without a single wrinkle visible, yet her mature charm naturally permeated the air.
“I had to come, didn’t I? Otherwise, I doubt we could have persuaded you to join us.”
Celeste said with a smile, causing Sam to pause and then laugh awkwardly.
“How could that be? Even if Godmother hadn’t come, I would have gone to see Godmother.”
That was a blatant lie.
If possible, Sam really didn’t want to see this woman more than necessary.
Being around her was just too stressful, and she often brought nothing but trouble.
Celeste always seemed to be plotting ways to ‘advance the plot’ for Sam, yet she wasn’t just a tool; it felt like being a new hero just out of the starting village, constantly accompanied by a big boss exerting immense pressure.
Celeste smiled again.
“Is that so? Then why haven’t we seen each other for so long?”
“Has it been long?”
“It’s been over a week, isn’t that long?”
Good grief.
Over a week is long?
Are you like a plant in Farmville that dies if not tended to for a few days?
Sam couldn’t voice these thoughts, of course, and just laughed awkwardly.
“Ah… sorry, I’ve been busy with exams and such, didn’t manage to make time. I’ll be more attentive in the future.”
Celeste then patted the back of Sam’s hand.

Even though the car’s heater was sufficiently warm, it couldn’t compare to this woman’s gentle touch.
The sensation was strikingly different, as if the warmth could penetrate through the skin and into the veins.
Every smile and gesture of Celeste’s seemed so perfect, every move so fitting, you couldn’t find a single fault. It even made you feel that any strange thoughts or feelings were due to your own flaws, the inherent vices of human nature.
“It’s okay, young people have their own lives. Everyone has to leave their parents and fly high at some point. It’s just that as parents, we always hope that time could be delayed a bit longer.”
The way she said it, you’d think Celeste was Sam’s biological mother.
Sam was somewhat confused. Was this woman getting too caught up in her role?
Upon hearing this, Angel couldn’t help but frown. “Can you two cut it out? Why are you being so cheesy?”
Celeste immediately turned around, grabbed Angel’s hand, and while holding it said, “What’s wrong, Angel? It’s okay, mommy will hug you.”
“No thanks! Stop grossing me out… I mean, you two aren’t actually mother and son, right? Or do you just naturally love to act?”
Angel was not one to mince words.
She was quite dissatisfied with Celeste’s behavior and speech.
It felt instinctively weird, like… as if her mother was engaging in some kind of betrayal, being overly affectionate with her own boyfriend.
That’s not how a normal mother behaves.
Celeste feigned surprise as she looked at her daughter.
“Angel, how can you talk about your mom like that?”
“Well, maybe if you acted more like a mother, I wouldn’t talk like this, right? Now let go!”
Angel was irritated to see her mother holding her boyfriend’s hand, and even more so because the idiot wasn’t pulling away.
Of course, Sam wanted to pull away. If it had been anyone other than Celeste, he would have done so immediately.
With Angel’s firm resistance, Celeste finally let go of the hand reluctantly.
“Really, you child.”
Angel, annoyed, brushed her forehead with her hand.
“That’s just who I am… and you really have no sense of boundaries, do you?”
“What are boundaries?”
Celeste looked genuinely puzzled and curious.
Angel sighed.
“Never mind, it’s nothing.”
She felt her mother was definitely playing dumb. She might be getting on in years, but she wasn’t out of touch with the times.
Rather, it seemed like she was always coming up with schemes just to annoy her.
“Then Sam, you tell me. Ah, it’s tough being an old person out of touch with the times, easy to be left behind, quite sad.”
“Uh, well…”
Sam gave a very vague explanation, carefully avoiding any sensitive issues.
It was difficult, but he managed.
At least he ensured the car safely reached its destination without metaphorically exploding along the way.
The familiar mansion.
The familiar gate.
The only difference was that under the howling cold wind, the mansion seemed somewhat desolate and ancient.
“Hey! It’s Sam!”
Selena, already bundled up in a down jacket, looked adorable like a little bear, waddling over with her cat ‘Biscuit’ dressed in a tiny outfit in her arms.
“Happy Christmas, Selena.”
“It’s not Christmas yet, has Sam gone silly?”
Sam looked at the little girl thoughtfully.
“I’m just wishing you in advance, in case you go back to your hometown for Christmas.”
Selena blinked her big, fluttering eyes.
“That’s true, I am going back home for Christmas… oh, but it’s not as fun there.”
Angel, who had taken off her coat and entered the inner room, looked over coldly.
“The winter break isn’t that long, and besides, you have to do homework every day here. Are you really that happy?”
Selena pondered for a moment.
The child was caught in a simple yet complex dilemma, where the experience of one aspect fiercely intertwined with the hardship of another.
It was a real struggle for a child.
Though it might not be right to call her just a child, as she was already in middle school, around the same age as Sam’s sister, but much more naive and innocent.
It was rare to see such a child in a large family.
“But I still really like being with my sister~”
Selena hugged Angel’s slender waist, and Sam felt a bit envious.
Angel helplessly looked down at the girl, then glanced at Sam.
“Then you need to behave better. Otherwise, I might just send you to Sam’s hometown.”
“Eh? Where is Sam’s hometown?”
“In Cedarwood,” Sam said with a smile.
“Cedarwood? Is that place weird?” Selena seemed unfamiliar with it.
Sam thought for a moment. “I wouldn’t say it’s weird, but compared to Kuhang, it’s really nothing special. The transportation isn’t as good, and there aren’t many recreational facilities. Kids can only go for walks and enjoy the rural scenery; there’s not much fun to be had.”
Indeed, the charm of some places is not always apparent to the young.
Moreover, when it comes to places where one doesn’t feel a sense of belonging, people often hold double standards.
Selena pondered for a moment. “So, if my sister marries you, Sam, does that mean she would have to move to Cedarwood?”
Angel, both amused and slightly annoyed, replied, “Don’t worry. If we got married, he would be the one moving here.”
“Why is that? On TV, it always seems like the girl moves to the boy’s place.”
Selena, at her age, didn’t understand many things, perhaps because she wasn’t interested.
Angel’s lips curled slightly as she glanced at Sam, who seemed at a loss for words. “Why don’t you tell her?”
Sam thought for a moment, then bent down to pat Selena’s head, smiling as he spoke. “That’s because I love your sister so much, I’d be willing to go anywhere for her.”
Selena’s eyes sparkled with stars. “Wow… that’s so romantic. Sam, you’re so nice~~”
Angel shook her head, amused. To her, this was just a child’s naivety, unable to discern a womanizer’s sweet talk… no, she couldn’t even conceive that this boy could be a womanizer.
Then Angel whispered softly, “Haven’t I taught you never to trust a man’s words at face value?”
“Why? I think what Sam said is true.”
Sam nodded vigorously. “See, a child’s intuition is the most accurate.”
“I’m not a child! I’m already going into ninth grade!”
“There you go, she says she’s not a child.”
“But I’m not lying either.”
Humming a tune, Sam walked into the living room.
At that moment, Celeste was taking off her coat, revealing a delicate, lightweight merino wool sweater underneath. It was more refined than a regular sweater, without a single loose thread. It clung to her skin, accentuating her curves in a striking manner.
It was hard for Sam to not think of her as sexy, and the thought of her undressing… What are you thinking, Sam! That’s criminal!
“Cough, Godmother,” Sam managed to say, sitting down properly in front of this woman.
Celeste was pouring tea. “No need to be so formal. After all, you’re like my own child, and you’re Angel’s boyfriend. You can act more naturally.”
Sam smiled shyly. “I appreciate your kindness, Godmother, but I can’t just take it for granted, or feel entitled. How does that saying go? ‘With great fortune comes great reverence.'”
Celeste chuckled and pushed a cup of tea towards Sam. “Try this, it’s a top-quality Longjing tea imported from China.”
Sam took a sip. Not having much experience in tea tasting, he could only feel that it was very soothing to drink, definitely different from ordinary tea. To pretend he could offer a profound insight would just be bragging, and he didn’t want to play the fool.
“It’s quite nice,” Sam said after taking a sip. “I’m just interested in interesting things.”
“Isn’t everyone?” Celeste remarked thoughtfully. “It’s interest that drives us, that’s true for everyone.”
Sam looked at the woman in front of him, reminded of something. “So, managing this huge family business, is that something you’re interested in, Godmother?”
Celeste paused, seemingly caught off guard by Sam’s bold question. She looked at him. “Why do you ask?”
Sam smiled shyly. “It’s nothing, I just think the hardships involved in such matters are beyond my imagination. I probably wouldn’t be good at it in a lifetime, so I really admire you.”
His statement was partly flattery and partly a reaffirmation to Celeste that he had no interest in their vast family wealth.
Celeste’s gaze flickered slightly. “To be honest… I had no interest at first, but I had no choice. If I didn’t do it, those coveting our wealth would take everything away. Whether for Selena or for Angel, I had to do it. I think, in the future, Sam, you might understand how I feel.”
Sam shook his head. “I didn’t mean that. Leave it to Angel; she will handle it well.”
“As her future man, don’t you want to do more, even if it’s just offering some help?” Celeste asked lightly, but each word precisely targeted the vulnerabilities in Sam’s heart.
Sam smiled and shook his head again. “There will definitely be many ways I can help in life, but I can’t do much about business.”
“Men seem to say that at first. Every ambitious person does the same, hiding their skills until the right moment to take their place. Isn’t that normal?” She smiled, but it was a chilling smile.
Sam’s expression remained unshaken, as if he was oblivious to the implications. “Perhaps that’s true, but there are always signs from the start. I’m just not talented in that area, powerless even if willing, and I genuinely prefer life over the battlefield.”
Sam felt his response was perfect, a flawless parry to her probing.
However, Celeste shifted her gaze and in a very soft tone, dropped a chilling question that made Sam sweat.
“Is that so? If that’s your attitude… then how do you plan to handle the other women in your life?”
