Chapter 300: I have to admit, in many ways, you’re more mature than I am
“In this cold weather, you’re wearing just that?”
When Sam, dressed in a thick black hoodie and jeans, got into the car, he noticed Mia’s outfit. She still looked like a dashing female motorcyclist, her attire hardly suitable for the season.
Her thin white trench coat and the plain shirt underneath did little to suggest warmth. Though she wore boots and stockings, her outfit seemed more appropriate for summer.
Mia’s graceful figure, her long hair fluttering in the wind, and her fair cheeks flushed from the cold, she huffed, “What? Starting to worry about me?”
Sam shook his head. “There’s a lot of flu going around; I’m worried you might give it to me.”
“You don’t care at all, do you?” Mia said, feigning hurt.
Sam chuckled as he looked at her. “If you want me to care, you should dress more sensibly. Aren’t you just asking for a cold in that outfit?”
“It’s fine, I’m quite robust. Besides, I’d rather freeze than dress up like a bear.”
“I mean… if you plan to take me to the hospital on your motorcycle, we might actually freeze to death.”
Mia laughed, “Don’t worry, I’ve tested the route. As long as we keep the speed down, it won’t be too cold. I rode here like this; you’re not colder than me, are you?”
Sam nodded. “Yeah, being colder than you would be hard to accept, wouldn’t it? Why don’t you go to the hospital like this, and I’ll take a cab?”
“Cut the crap, get on, we don’t have time to waste!” Mia said, her face turning red with annoyance.
Sam still got on the motorcycle. Actually, it wasn’t too bad.
No matter how fast Mia drove, his body could handle it. With his current physique, getting sick seemed unlikely. The helmet prevented any cold wind from cutting across his face like a knife. It only seeped into his neck like fine silk threads.
But there was a small consolation—Sam had to slightly support Mia by holding her waist. The delicate waistline, irresistibly tactile, made the ride somewhat bearable.
However, with Mia’s speed, chatting along the way was impossible, and Sam didn’t dare distract her.
Finally, they arrived at the hospital.
Mia turned her head to look at Sam. “Feels good, doesn’t it?”
“What?” Sam was puzzled.
“My waist.” Mia clarified.
Sam glanced at his hands that were still resting on Mia’s waist, and he seriously considered her question for a moment. “Not bad, you haven’t gained weight recently.”
“Like you’re one to talk? Let go and get off!” Mia snapped.
“Oh.” Sam calmly released his grip, his expression utterly serene, showing no sign of guilt.
With a flushed face, Mia took off her helmet and glared fiercely at Sam. Seeing his indifferent, thick-skinned demeanor, she realized there was nothing she could do about it. Perhaps… given their relationship, such physical contact wasn’t a big deal anymore. After all, in their dreams… they had done things a hundred times more thrilling than this…
Why did she start thinking about that again!
Mia shook her head. “Let’s go. Her parents aren’t here today; I notified them in advance, so we have about half an hour to visit.”
“Is there really such a strict time limit?” Sam asked.
“Of course, she’s hospitalized, not turned into a specimen yet,” Mia replied irritably.
Sam couldn’t help but chuckle. “So, the boss makes jokes like this too?”
“Why wouldn’t I? Do you see me as some rigid, rule-following, joyless, overly cautious old woman?” Mia retorted.

“Although you’re definitely not that kind of woman, why do I feel like you’re hinting at Officer Aurora?” Sam teased. The term ‘old woman’ certainly didn’t fit Aurora’s persona. It seemed more like Mia’s impression of her sister was that of someone rigid, rule-following, and devoid of fun.
Mia immediately leaned closer to Sam. “You think she’s that kind of woman too, right?”
“Sorry, not at all, that’s your view,” Sam replied.
“What? So you think highly of her?” Mia pressed.
“It’s not that I think highly of her, but Officer Aurora is also a very charming woman. She’s not as bad as you make her out to be,” Sam explained.
Mia immediately frowned and gave Sam a very strange look, even appearing a bit awkward. “I mean… you don’t happen to love her, do you?”
“Why do you think that?” Sam asked.
“Because you keep praising her. When a man says a woman is charming, doesn’t it usually mean he’s fond of her? Plus… she’s a cop.”
“First of all, saying someone is charming is just polite and honest. I’m not blind, after all, but that doesn’t mean I like her. And secondly… since when is being a cop a special condition?”
“Of course, it is! Don’t guys usually love those themes about cops… detectives and such?”
As she spoke, Mia’s face turned a suspicious shade of red, and even she realized there was something off about her own words.
Sam was momentarily stunned, thinking he had misheard, then immediately turned to look at the woman pretending to know nothing.
“Where did you learn about these themes?”
“I…”
“You haven’t been watching them secretly, have you?”
“Absolutely not!!”
Mia vehemently denied it, her eyes wide and her cheeks flushing even redder. The more forcefully she objected, the more it seemed to confirm Sam’s suspicions.
“Well, someone said that girls might be hornier than boys. I didn’t believe it, but now…”
“Who’s horny? You’re the horny one!”
“Would someone who’s not horny secretly watch porn?”
“I didn’t!! It was someone else watching, not me!”
“If you’re not horny, then how come you dream about those scenes?”
“Say that again, I dare you!”
Mia, unable to argue any longer, started hitting and kicking Sam.
Clearly, Sam didn’t mind; he was tough-skinned.
But then…
“Could you two please be a bit more mindful? This is a hospital, and while it’s normal for couples to tease each other, please try to keep it under control,” a passing doctor politely reminded them.
“We’re not—”
Mia immediately tried to explain, but the doctor didn’t seem to care much, just pushing up her glasses.
“It’s fine. Couples in love often act this way. I have a lot of experience with this.”
It seemed she was trying to prove her extensive experience in romance, even raising an eyebrow.
Mia was left dumbfounded.
After the doctor left, she turned to Sam.
“She sounds like she’s a pro at relationships.”
Sam chuckled. “A true master of love never boasts about their romantic experiences. The real pros are like skilled hunters, appearing just like their prey.”
“So, she was just bluffing?” Mia asked.
“Of course, isn’t it obvious?”
“But seriously, her eyesight must be pretty bad, mistaking us for a couple… right?”
Mia looked at Sam, who nodded as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Absolutely, she must be blind.”
“I think you’re the blind one!”
“Why? I was agreeing with you.”
“Your agreement makes it sound like I’m not in your league, which is annoying!”
“I didn’t mean that…”
“That’s exactly what you meant!”
Their brief moment of peace lasted only a few seconds.
If they hadn’t been about to reach their floor, their childish, pointless bickering might have continued.
Sam didn’t even need to know which hospital room it was; he could tell they were at their destination just by watching Mia’s mood darken and her anxiety increase.
As Mia spoke with the nurse about visiting arrangements and made a phone call, presumably to the parents of the girl lying unaware in the hospital bed, they were allowed into the room.
The hospital room was tidy and quiet.
Apart from the unfamiliar medical equipment and IV tubes, there wasn’t much else.
The girl lying in the bed was very still.
“This is Charlotte,” Mia whispered, pulling up a chair for Sam.
Compared to the photo Sam had seen, the peacefully resting girl looked young, about his age, with the innocence of a high school student.
Her features were pretty, and despite looking a bit malnourished, her natural beauty was evident.
Sam nodded, taking in her condition. She looked like a sleeping beauty, her eyelashes not even fluttering.
Her breathing was barely perceptible.
“She’s even prettier than in her photo,” Sam remarked.
Mia smiled, then sighed deeply. “Yeah… she really is beautiful. If it weren’t for her social anxiety, she could have been a very influential girl at school, with countless people wanting to be her friend. She had that chance… but because of me…”
Mia’s voice trailed off, growing heavier with guilt.
Sam looked at the sunlight falling outside the window, illuminating everything but unable to reach the edge of the bed. It seemed to symbolize that divine care for the girl only went so far.
“Don’t carry the burden of all disasters on your own shoulders; you can’t bear that weight. Besides, she’s still alive, and as long as there’s life, there’s hope.”
Mia nodded, taking a deep breath. “You’re right, she’s still alive, which means she’s still fighting, right? As long as she’s fighting, as long as there’s even a sliver of hope, I can’t give up.”
Sam didn’t want to dampen her spirit, but some things needed to be said. “Boss Mia, I understand your guilt and your feelings. But I want to say in advance… prepare for the worst. Just know that you’re doing your best for her, and that’s enough.”
Mia looked at the strikingly handsome Sam, smiled softly, and didn’t force the issue. “I understand that, and thank you for helping me. Sometimes I might say annoying things to you, but there’s no malice. In fact, I should thank you for your patience. I have to admit, in many ways, you’re more mature than I am.”
Sam shook his head. “It’s okay. It’s just concern making things messy. You’re already doing excellently, otherwise, you wouldn’t have come this far.”
“…So, later today… can we try the dream therapy a bit later?”
At this point, Sam couldn’t say no. He nodded. “Sure.”
“Good… then maybe wait outside for a bit. There are some things I want to say to her, even if she can’t hear them… I’d feel a bit embarrassed with you here…”
Sam smiled and stood up. “No worries, take your time. I’ll wait outside for you.”
Sam stood up and left, watching the occasional doctor and nurse pass by in the corridor outside.
Some female nurses cast curious glances his way, but Sam wasn’t in the mood for such distractions. He was just reflecting on the fickleness of fate. But then again, why should he dwell on such thoughts?
After all, in some foreseeable bad endings, his own fate wouldn’t be much better than Charlotte’s on the hospital bed.
Better to save some sympathy and empathy for himself. Who knows? He might end up in a major news story one day.
Sam chuckled to himself.
He glanced at his phone; it was a message from his sister, seemingly excited about their upcoming Monday meeting.
Sam simply advised her: “Be careful on the road, and watch your luggage.”
But Ava quickly replied to Sam. “Brother, are you unhappy?”
“Why do you think that?”
“It just feels like you’re not in a good mood.”
“You can tell my mood from the text I type?”
“Of course, we’re siblings after all~”
Despite the uncertain future, having people who cared about him was enough to find joy amidst the sorrow.
The door to the hospital room creaked open.
It was Mia, her eyes slightly red and swollen, who came out. She managed a weak smile. “Sorry to keep you waiting.”
Sam shook his head. “It’s okay, I’m a man who’s good at waiting.”
Mia snorted with laughter. “Stop trying to act all mature… So, where shall we try…”
Her cheeks flushed, a mix of ambiguous tension and nervousness spreading.
Sam was also a bit perplexed. “Convenience store…?”
“What if someone sees us? It’s daytime, you know… Maybe a hotel? But wouldn’t it be weird for us to check into a hotel room, just the two of us…”
Watching her fidget, Sam sighed.
It felt like a trap, but there was no avoiding it now. “Alright, no need to beat around the bush, let’s go to my place.”
