THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 12
Chapter 12: The Web of Deceit
Liam ran a hand through his hair, frustration etched on his face. “This is insane,” he muttered, his voice low. “How deep does this go?”
Liam fingers trembling slightly, held up a photograph. “Look at this,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. The photo showed a group of men in suits, shaking hands and smiling for the camera. “These are the same men we’ve seen in Henry’s files. They’re all connected.”
Ava took the photo from Liam, studying the faces. She recognized some of them â politicians, businessmen, even law enforcement officers. It was a web of deceit, woven so intricately that it was almost impossible to see where it began or ended. Her mind reeled as she tried to process the implications.
“Henry’s been using them to cover his tracks,” Ava said, her voice shaky. “He’s got the entire city in his pocket.”
Liam clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. “We need to expose this,” he said, determination burning in his eyes. “We can’t let him get away with it.”
But Ava’s mind was elsewhere. She was staring at another photograph that had caught her eye â one of herself as a child, standing next to a woman she didn’t recognize. The woman was smiling, her hand resting on Ava’s shoulder in a gesture of familiarity and affection. Ava’s heart skipped a beat as she tried to recall the memory, but it was like trying to grasp smoke.
“Who is she?” Ava asked aloud, her voice tinged with desperation.
Liam looked at the photo, “Do you remember anything about her?” Liam asked gently.
Ava shook her head, feeling a lump form in her throat. “No,” she whispered. “I don’t remember her at all.”
Liam put a comforting hand on her shoulder. “We’ll figure it out,” he said softly. “We’ll get to the bottom of this, Ava. I promise.”
Ava wanted to believe him, but the weight of the revelations was too much to bear. She felt like she was drowning in a sea of betrayal, each new piece of information pulling her further under. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “We need to keep going,” she said, her voice firmer now. “We need to find out who she is and what connection she has to all of this.”
The duo continued their search, each revelation bringing them closer to the heart of the conspiracy. When they delved deeper, they uncovered a network of corrupt officials who had been aiding Henry in his nefarious schemes. Bribes, blackmail, and threats had kept them in line, ensuring their silence and cooperation. It was a sickening display of power and greed, and Ava could feel her anger growing with each new discovery.
“These people are supposed to protect us,” Ava said bitterly, slamming a file down on the table. “And instead, they’re helping him destroy lives.”
Liam nodded, his expression grim. “It’s all about money and power,” he said. “They don’t care about anything else.”
Liam eyes narrowed as he read through another document. “We need to find a way to expose them,” he said. “If we can get this information to the right people, we can bring them down.”
But who were the right people? Ava wondered. Who could they trust in a city so deeply corrupted? The thought was overwhelming, and she felt a wave of hopelessness wash over her. But she pushed it aside, focusing on the task at hand. They had come too far to give up now.
Hours passed in a blur as they pieced together the puzzle, their determination unwavering. The more they uncovered, the clearer the picture became. Henry had been orchestrating everything from the shadows, pulling strings and manipulating those around him to achieve his goals. It was a masterful display of cunning and deceit, and it made Ava’s blood boil.
“We’re getting close,” Liam said, his voice filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. “I can feel it.”
Ava nodded, though she couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had settled over her. There was something they were missing, a piece of the puzzle that hadn’t yet fallen into place. And then she saw it â another photograph, hidden beneath a stack of papers. It was a picture of Henry, much younger, standing next to the same woman from her childhood photo.
Her blood ran cold as she made the connection. “Oh my God,” she breathed, holding up the photo for Liam to see. “She knew Henry. She was involved with him.”
Liam eyes widened in shock. “What does this mean?” he asked, his voice trembling.
Ava’s mind raced as she tried to piece it together. “I don’t know,” she said, her voice barely audible. “But it can’t be a coincidence.”
Liam stared at the photo, his jaw clenched. “We need to find her,” he said firmly. “She might have the answers we need.”
But where would they start? Ava felt a sense of dread settle over her as she realized the enormity of the task ahead. The woman in the photo was a ghost from her past, and finding her would be like searching for a needle in a haystack. But she knew they had to try. It was their only hope of uncovering the truth and bringing Henry to justice.
As they packed up their findings and prepared to leave, Ava took one last look at the photo. The woman’s face was kind, her smile genuine. But there was something in her eyes, something that hinted at secrets long buried. Ava couldn’t shake the feeling that this woman held the key to everything â and she was determined to find her, no matter what it took.
The door creaked open, and Ava froze. Footsteps echoed down the hallway, growing louder with each passing second. Liam and Ava’s heart pounded in their chest. They were out of time.
“Quick, hide the files,” Liam whispered urgently, shoving papers into a backpack. “We can’t let them find this.”
Ava and Liam scrambled to gather everything, their movements frantic. The footsteps were just outside the door now, and Ava could feel the panic rising within her. They couldn’t be caught, not now, not when they were so close.
The door burst open, and a figure stepped inside, silhouetted against the dim light. Ava’s breath caught in her throat as she recognized the face â it was one of Henry’s men.
“What do we have here?” he sneered, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene.

Ava’s mind raced, searching for a way out. They were cornered, trapped like rats in a cage. But she refused to give up. She glanced at Liam, seeing the same determination in his eyes. They would fight, they would resist, and they would uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
The man stepped closer, his expression menacing. “You think you can stop us?” he taunted, his voice dripping with contempt.
Ava squared her shoulders, meeting his gaze head-on. “We’ll see about that,” she said, her voice steady despite the fear churning inside her.
