THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 13
Chapter 13: Unlikely Connections
Ava’s fingers trembled as she held the worn photograph. The edges were frayed, and the colors had faded over time, but the faces were unmistakable. Her father, much younger and smiling warmly, stood beside an unfamiliar woman. Ava’s heart pounded in her chest as she stared at the image, her mind racing with questions.
She stormed into the living room, where her father sat engrossed in a book. The moment she stepped in, the air grew thick with tension. She clenched the photo tighter, knuckles turning white.
“Dad,” Ava’s voice was strained, barely above a whisper. “Who is this woman?”
Her father looked up, his eyes narrowing as they fell upon the photo in her hand. For a split second, a flicker of something crossed his faceârecognition, perhapsâbut it vanished as quickly as it came. He closed the book slowly, setting it down with deliberate care.
“Where did you find that?” he asked, his tone carefully neutral.
Ava took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “In the attic, among Grandma’s old things. Why have I never seen this before?”
Her father stood up, smoothing his shirt as if buying himself time. He walked over to the window, staring out into the darkening sky. “It’s… a long story, Ava. One that’s not as important as you might think.”
“Not important?” Ava’s voice rose, a mix of disbelief and frustration. “This woman is in a photo with you, looking like she means something. You can’t just brush it off.”
He turned to face her, his expression unreadable. “Some things are better left in the past, Ava. This is one of them.”
Ava felt her frustration boiling over. “That’s not good enough! I have a right to know. Why are you being so evasive?”
Her father’s silence was deafening. He turned back to the window, his back to her, as if the conversation was over. But for Ava, it was far from over.
Liam chose that moment to enter the room, sensing the charged atmosphere. “What’s going on?” he asked, looking between Ava and her father.
Ava thrust the photo at him. “Look at this, Liam. Dad won’t tell me who she is.”
Liam examined the photo, his brow furrowing. “Maybe we should find out ourselves,” he suggested, his voice calm but firm.
Her father spun around, his eyes wide with alarm. “No. Leave it alone. It’s for your own good.”
“Why?” Ava demanded. “Why is it so dangerous to know the truth?”
Her father shook his head, refusing to meet her gaze. “Just trust me, Ava.”
But trust was the last thing on Ava’s mind. She turned to Liam, her determination mirrored in his eyes. “We’re doing this,” she said, her voice resolute.
Liam nodded. “We’ll find her.”
One evening, as they sat surrounded by papers and maps, Ava’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and froze. It was a text from an unknown number.
“Stop your investigation or face the consequences.”
Ava’s hands shook as she showed the message to Liam. “Who could this be? How do they know what we’re doing?”
Liam’s jaw tightened. “Someone who doesn’t want the truth to come out. But this only means we’re on the right track.”
Ava nodded, trying to muster courage despite the fear gnawing at her. “We can’t stop now.”
As they resumed their search, a knock at the door startled them. Ava’s heart raced as she opened it, revealing a package with no return address. Inside, a single piece of paper bore a chilling message: “Last warning.”
Her father found them then, his face ashen. “You should have listened,” he said quietly, his voice laced with a mix of fear and resignation.
Ava looked at him, the anger in her eyes replaced by a plea for understanding. “Please, Dad. Tell us what’s going on. Who is Evelyn, and why are we being threatened?”
He sank into a chair, the weight of years of secrets visibly crushing him. “Evelyn… she was more than just a friend. She was involved in something dangerous, something that could ruin us all if it came to light.”
Liam stepped forward. “What kind of danger are we talking about?”
Her father glanced at the photo still in Liam’s hand. “She was part of an organization. They dealt with… sensitive information, the kind that powerful people would kill to keep hidden.”

Ava’s mind reeled. “Why were you involved with them?”
“I didn’t have a choice,” he admitted, his voice breaking. “I was young and foolish, and I got in too deep. By the time I realized the danger, it was too late to get out.”
Ava felt a chill run down her spine. “And now they’re trying to stop us from digging up the past.”
Her father nodded. “Exactly. They’ll do whatever it takes to keep their secrets buried. And that means we’re all in danger.”
Liam exchanged a grim look with Ava. “We need to be careful. But we also need to know the whole truth.”
Her father sighed, a look of resignation in his eyes. “There’s more, but it’s not safe to talk here. We need to go somewhere they can’t reach us.”
