THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 133
Chapter 133: Trust in the Shadows
“I don’t trust him,” Liam’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and decisive. He was standing in the doorway, his figure partially obscured by the shadows, but his presence was undeniable, commanding.
Ava turned to face him, her expression unreadable. “We don’t have a choice,” she replied, her voice steady but laced with the same uncertainty that gnawed at her insides. “If he’s telling the truth, then we need him.”
“But if he’s not…” Liam let the words hang in the air, the unspoken threat of betrayal looming like a dark cloud over them. His eyes, cold and calculating, never left hers, as if searching for some sign, some indication that she shared his doubts.
Ava’s resolve wavered. She wanted to believe in the ally, to believe that there was still some good left in the world, that not everything was tainted by lies and deceit. But the fear, the fear of making the wrong decision, of putting her team in danger, gnawed at her like a relentless predator.
“He was forced,” she whispered, as if saying it aloud would make it true, would somehow ease the burden of doubt that weighed heavily on her shoulders. “He had no choice.”
Liam’s gaze softened, if only for a moment, as he stepped closer to her. “Ava, we can’t afford to be wrong. Not now. Not when everything is at stake.”
She looked away, her eyes tracing the cracks in the wall, the imperfections that seemed to mirror the fractures within their team. Trust was a fragile thing, a delicate thread that could so easily be severed by the sharp edges of deception.
“We’ll watch him,” Liam continued, his voice a low rumble that seemed to resonate with the very foundations of the house. “If he shows any sign of betrayal…”
Ava nodded, her throat tight. She knew what he was implying, and it terrified her. The thought of having to make that kind of decision, of having to choose between trust and survival, was a burden she wasn’t sure she could bear.
Just then, the door creaked open, and the ally stepped into the room. His presence was like a sudden gust of wind, chilling and unsettling. He was a man of shadows, his intentions as murky as the darkness that seemed to follow him wherever he went.
“We need to talk,” he said, his voice smooth but carrying an edge that set Ava on edge. “There’s something you need to know.”
Liam tensed, his hand instinctively moving to the hilt of his weapon. The air crackled with the potential for violence, as if the very room was holding its breath, waiting for the inevitable explosion.
“What is it?” Ava asked, her voice betraying none of the anxiety that roiled within her.
The ally’s eyes flickered, a brief flash of something unreadable crossing his face before he spoke. “I’ve been working for the mastermind.”
The words hit Ava like a physical blow, knocking the breath from her lungs. She staggered back, her mind reeling, trying to process the implications of what he’d just said.
“But I had no choice,” he continued quickly, sensing the rising tide of suspicion. “I was coerced, blackmailed. My family… they have my family.”
Liam’s eyes narrowed, suspicion radiating from him like a palpable force. “And we’re just supposed to believe you? After everything?”
The ally’s expression hardened, a spark of defiance flaring in his eyes. “I don’t care if you believe me or not. I’m telling you the truth because you need to know. The mastermind has been manipulating you from the very beginning. Every move you’ve made, every step you’ve taken… it’s all been part of his plan.”
Ava felt a cold chill slither down her spine. The mastermind’s web of deceit was far more intricate, far more insidious, than she had ever imagined. It wasn’t just about outmaneuvering them, it was about controlling them, making them dance to his twisted tune.
“What do you mean?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
The ally sighed, running a hand through his hair, a gesture that seemed more out of frustration than anything else. “He’s been feeding you false leads, setting up traps, manipulating your every move. He wanted you to find me, to bring me into your fold, because he knew it would divide you. He knew it would make you doubt each other, make you question your loyalty to one another.”
Ava’s heart pounded in her chest, each beat echoing like a drum in her ears. She could feel the fragile threads of trust unraveling, could feel the doubt seeping into her mind like poison.
“And now what?” Liam demanded, his voice hard and unyielding. “You expect us to trust you? To believe that you’re suddenly on our side?”
The ally met his gaze head-on, his eyes burning with an intensity that was almost frightening. “I don’t expect you to trust me. But I can help you. I can give you information that could turn the tide in your favor. But it comes at a price.”
Ava’s breath caught in her throat. There was always a price. In this world of shadows and lies, nothing came for free.
“What price?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
The ally hesitated, a flicker of somethingâguilt, perhaps?âcrossing his features before he spoke. “I need your protection. I need you to help me get my family back.”
Silence descended upon the room, heavy and suffocating, as the weight of his words settled over them. Ava could feel Liam’s gaze boring into her, could feel the unspoken question hanging between them: Can we trust him?
“I don’t know if I can trust you,” Ava admitted, her voice raw with emotion. “But if there’s even a chance that you’re telling the truth… we can’t afford to ignore it.”
Liam’s jaw clenched, his hands balled into fists at his sides. “This is a mistake, Asha. You’re letting your emotions cloud your judgment.”

Ava turned to face him, her eyes blazing with a determination that belied the turmoil within her. “Maybe I am. But we can’t do this alone. We need allies, even if we have to take a risk to get them.”
The tension in the room was palpable, a living, breathing thing that threatened to suffocate them all. But before anyone could speak, the door burst open, and a new figure stepped into the room.
He was tall, with an air of confidence that bordered on arrogance. His eyes, sharp and calculating, swept over the room, taking in every detail, every person. There was something about him, something that made the hairs on the back of Ava’s neck stand on end.
“Who the hell are you?” Liam demanded, his voice a growl of suspicion.
The newcomer smiled, a slow, predatory grin that sent a shiver down Ava’s spine. “I’m here to help. For a price, of course.”
Ava’s heart sank. Another deal, another risk. But what choice did they have? They were running out of time, out of options.
“What do you want?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The man stepped closer, his gaze locking onto hers, intense and unyielding. “Information. I want information on the mastermind’s next move. And in return, I’ll give you something that could change everything.”
Ava swallowed hard, her mind racing. Could they trust him? Could they afford not to?
“And what is that?” Liam asked, his voice dripping with skepticism.
The man’s smile widened, a glint of something dangerous in his eyes. “A way to stop him. A way to finally bring him down.”
Ava’s heart pounded in her chest, the weight of the decision pressing down on her like a physical force. This could be their chance, their only chance. But it could also be another trap, another layer of the mastermind’s twisted game.
Before she could speak, the man stepped forward, his voice low and ominous. “But be warned: once you take this step, there’s no turning back. The stakes have never been higher, and the cost… the cost could be everything.”
Ava glanced at Liam, saw the conflict in his eyes, the doubt that mirrored her own. They were standing on the edge of a precipice, one wrong move and they could lose everything.
But she had to decide. She had to choose. Trust in the shadows, or risk it all for the chance at victory.
Taking a deep breath, she met the man’s gaze, her voice steady despite the fear that gnawed at her insides. “Tell us what you know.”
The man nodded, his expression grave. “The mastermind’s next move… it’s already in motion. And if you don’t act now, you’ll be too late.”
The room seemed to shrink around them, the walls closing in as the weight of his words settled over them like a suffocating blanket. The stakes had never been higher, the risks never greater.
But in this world of shadows and lies, sometimes the only choice was to trust… and hope that trust wouldn’t be their undoing.
