THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 161
Chapter 161: The Mysterious Savior
The night was a cloak of darkness, pressing in from all sides, suffocating in its stillness. Ava’s heart raced, her breath coming in shallow gasps as she clung to the rough bark of a towering tree. The forest around her was silent, save for the distant rustle of leaves and the occasional snap of a twig underfoot. But she wasn’t alone.
“Why should I trust you?” Ava’s voice was laced with exhaustion, yet defiant, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the man before her. His tall frame loomed in the shadows, a dark silhouette against the night.
The man remained silent, his gaze unreadable beneath the hood that shrouded his face. He stepped closer, the moonlight catching the edge of his cloak, revealing nothing more than a gloved hand extended towards her.
“Who are you?” Ava demanded, her voice trembling with the weight of the decision before her. Trust was a luxury she couldn’t afford. Not now, not when her life hung by a thread.
“Someone who knows what it means to run,” the man replied, his voice smooth, almost hypnotic in its calmness. “Someone who understands what it means to be hunted.”
Ava’s heart thudded in her chest, the words striking a chord deep within her. Hunted. The word resonated, a bitter reminder of the relentless pursuit that had driven her to the brink of despair. She glanced over her shoulder, back into the darkness from which she had fled. The shadows seemed to pulse with menace, the distant sound of her pursuers’ voices still echoing in her ears.
“You don’t know what they’re capable of,” she whispered, her voice barely audible as she fought to keep the fear at bay.
The man’s hand remained steady, unwavering. “I know enough,” he said, his tone carrying a weight of experience, of scars unseen. “And I know that if you stay here, you won’t survive the night.”
Ava hesitated, her mind racing. His words made sense, but could she believe him? Could she trust a stranger, someone who appeared out of nowhere, in the midst of her darkest hour?
“Why are you helping me?” she asked, her voice a mix of suspicion and desperation. “What do you want?”
“I want to see you live,” he replied simply, the words hanging in the air between them. “Isn’t that what you want too?”
Ava’s breath caught in her throat. Live. It was such a simple word, yet it carried the weight of all her fears, all her hopes. She had fought so hard, come so far. Could she really afford to gamble everything on the kindness of a stranger?
“I don’t even know your name,” she said, her voice tinged with frustration. The man’s calm demeanor was infuriating, his refusal to reveal anything about himself maddening.
“My name is not important,” he replied, his tone unyielding. “What matters is that I can help you. But only if you let me.”
Ava bit her lip, her mind a whirlwind of doubts. Trust or die. The choice was as stark as the cold night air that stung her cheeks. She glanced down at the man’s hand, still extended towards her, a lifeline in the midst of the storm.
“I don’t have much of a choice, do I?” she muttered, more to herself than to him.
“There’s always a choice,” he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. “But sometimes, the right one is the hardest to make.”
Ava looked up at him, searching his face for any sign of deceit, any hint of betrayal. But his features remained shrouded in shadow, his eyes hidden beneath the hood. He was an enigma, a puzzle she couldn’t solve. But what choice did she have?
Slowly, hesitantly, she reached out, her fingers brushing against his. The contact sent a jolt through her, a strange mix of fear and relief. His grip was firm, reassuring in its strength.
“Good,” he murmured, a faint smile playing at the corners of his lips. “Now, we need to move. They’re getting closer.”
Without another word, he turned and began to lead her through the forest, his steps sure and swift. Ava followed, her heart pounding in her chest, every nerve on edge. The darkness seemed to press in around them, the trees closing ranks like silent sentinels. She could still hear the distant voices of her pursuers, growing fainter with each step, but still too close for comfort.
“Where are you taking me?” she asked, her voice hushed as she stumbled over a root, barely catching herself before she fell.
“Somewhere safe,” the man replied, his tone clipped, as if he was weighing each word carefully.
“And where is that?” Ava pressed, her suspicion flaring once more. He was leading her deeper into the forest, away from the main path, away from any semblance of safety.
“Trust me,” he said, glancing back at her briefly. “You’ll know when we get there.”
Ava bit back a retort, frustration bubbling up inside her. Trust. It was the one thing she had learned never to give freely, not after everything she had been through. But what choice did she have now? Alone, she wouldn’t last the night. With him, she at least had a chance, however slim.
They continued on in silence, the night air growing colder, the trees thicker as they delved deeper into the heart of the forest. Ava’s mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, questions she dared not voice. Who was this man? How did he know so much about her, about her escape? And why was he helping her?
“Why me?” she finally asked, unable to keep the question at bay any longer. “Why go through all this trouble for someone you don’t even know?”
The man paused, turning to face her. For a moment, Ava thought she saw a flicker of something in his eyes, a glint of emotion quickly masked.
“Because I owe it to someone,” he said quietly, the words heavy with unspoken meaning. “Someone who once saved me when I was lost. Now, it’s my turn to return the favor.”

Ava stared at him, trying to decipher the layers of meaning in his words. Who was he talking about? And what did it have to do with her?
“Whoâ” she began, but he cut her off with a shake of his head.
“There’s no time for that now,” he said firmly, his tone brooking no argument. “We need to keep moving.”
Reluctantly, Ava nodded, pushing her questions aside for the moment. There would be time for answers later, once they were safeâif they ever got there.
They pressed on, the forest growing denser, the air colder with each passing minute. The moonlight barely penetrated the thick canopy above, casting long, eerie shadows that danced at the edges of Ava’s vision. She shivered, pulling her cloak tighter around her, the cold seeping into her bones.
“How much farther?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The night seemed to swallow her words, the silence oppressive.
“Not far,” the man replied, his tone unreadable. “Just a little longer.”
Ava clenched her fists, frustration gnawing at her. She hated thisâbeing in the dark, both literally and figuratively. But what choice did she have? Trust or die. The mantra echoed in her mind, a grim reminder of the stakes.
They rounded a bend, and suddenly the forest opened up before them, revealing a narrow path that wound its way through the trees. The man quickened his pace, his movements sure and purposeful.
“Where does this lead?” Ava asked, struggling to keep up.
“To a place where they can’t follow,” he replied cryptically, his gaze fixed ahead.
Ava’s heart skipped a beat. A place where they couldn’t follow? What did that mean? Her mind raced with possibilities, each more terrifying than the last.
They continued along the path, the forest closing in around them once more, the trees tall and foreboding. Ava’s breath came in short gasps, her exhaustion catching up with her. She stumbled, her foot catching on a root, and fell to the ground with a cry of pain.
The man was at her side in an instant, his hands gentle as he helped her to her feet. “Careful,” he murmured, his voice tinged with concern. “We’re almost there.”
Ava nodded, biting back tears of frustration. She was tired, so tired, but she couldn’t give up now. Not when they were so close.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they reached a clearing. The moonlight spilled over the trees, illuminating a small, dilapidated cabin nestled in the heart of the forest. The sight of it sent a shiver down Ava’s spine. It looked abandoned, forgotten, a relic of a time long past.
“This is it?” she asked, her voice filled with doubt. “This is where we’re supposed to be safe?”
The man nodded, his expression unreadable. “It’s more than it seems,” he said cryptically, leading her towards the cabin.
Ava hesitated, her instincts screaming at her to turn back, to run. But where would she go? Back into the forest, back into the hands of her pursuers?
With a deep breath, she followed him, her heart pounding in her chest. The door creaked as he pushed it open, revealing the dark interior of the cabin. Ava stepped inside, her eyes struggling to adjust to the gloom.
“What now?” she asked, her voice trembling.
The man didn’t answer. Instead, he reached into his cloak and pulled out a small, intricately carved box. He opened it, revealing a faintly glowing stone that pulsed with an otherworldly light.
“What is that?” Ava whispered, her eyes wide with awe and fear.
“Your way out,” the man replied, his voice low. “But it’s not without risk.”
Ava’s mind raced, trying to process what he was saying. A way out? How? And what kind of risk was he talking about?
“You have to trust me,” he said, his gaze locking onto hers. “This is the only way. But you have to make the choice. Now.”
Ava stared at the stone, the light drawing her in, mesmerizing her. Her heart pounded in her chest, fear and hope warring within her. This was it. The moment of truth. Trust or die.
With trembling hands, she reached out, her fingers brushing against the stone. The light flared, engulfing her in its warmth.
And then, everything went black.
