THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 175
Chapter 175: The Collapse
The rumble began like a whisper, a shiver in the bones of the earth, growing louder, more insistent. The tunnel shook, dust and small stones raining down on Ava and her companions. Behind them, the walls groaned, then cracked, giving way to a deafening crash as the tunnel collapsed, sealing off their only known escape route. They were trapped, the echoes of the collapse fading into the cold, oppressive silence.
“Move!” the shadowy figure commanded, his voice cutting through the haze of dust and fear that had descended upon them. There was no time to argue, no time to mourn the loss of their retreat. The only way was forward, deeper into the unknown.
Ava’s heart pounded in her chest, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she hurried after the figure. The darkness ahead was impenetrable, a void that seemed to swallow the weak light from their flickering torches. With every step, the air grew colder, and Ava could feel a presence in the tunnel, a silent watcher that sent chills down her spine.
“Are we alone?” she whispered, her voice trembling with the weight of unspoken fears. The shadowy figure did not answer, his silence more telling than words could ever be. Ava glanced at her companions, their faces pale and strained, their eyes darting nervously around them as if expecting the darkness to come alive at any moment.
But the silence pressed on, heavy and suffocating. The tunnel, with its cold, damp walls and eerie silence, became a tomb that threatened to crush them under its weight. The group moved slowly, carefully, each step filled with the dread of what lay ahead.
As they ventured deeper, Ava’s mind raced with thoughts of the unknown, the uncertainty of their future gnawing at her resolve. The darkness around them was more than just the absence of lightâit was a living thing, a force that seemed to feed on their fears, growing stronger with each passing moment. Ava’s trust in her companions began to waver, her mind whispering doubts, urging her to question their motives, to question her own judgment.
“Why did you bring us here?” Ava asked, her voice a strained whisper, the cold seeping into her bones. She had to know, had to understand the purpose of this treacherous journey. The figure ahead of her paused, his head tilting slightly as if considering whether to answer.
“You know why,” he finally said, his voice low, almost too quiet to hear. “The city has called us here. This is the only way to find the truth, to escape the darkness that hunts us.”
“But at what cost?” Ava demanded, her voice rising with a mix of frustration and fear. “We’re walking into a trap. Can’t you see that?”
The figure turned, his eyes gleaming with something unreadable in the dim light. “There is no other way, Ava. We cannot run from this. We have to face it.”
Ava felt a wave of despair crash over her, the weight of their situation pressing down on her chest like a stone. The cold, damp air filled her lungs, the musty scent of decay clinging to her like a shroud. Every breath felt like a struggle, a battle against the suffocating fear that threatened to overwhelm her.
But there was no choice. They had come too far, sacrificed too much to turn back now. The only path left was forward, into the heart of the darkness.
The tunnel twisted and turned, narrowing until they had to move single file, the walls closing in around them. The sound of their footsteps echoed eerily, a hollow, lonely sound that only served to heighten the tension. Ava’s mind raced, trying to make sense of the swirling thoughts and emotions that threatened to consume her. The cold bit into her skin, seeping through her clothes, chilling her to the bone. It was as if the very air was alive, pressing down on them, crushing them under its weight.
“Keep moving,” the figure urged, his voice barely more than a whisper. “We’re almost there.”
Ava wanted to believe him, wanted to cling to that thin thread of hope, but the darkness around them was relentless. Every step felt like a descent into madness, the shadows twisting and writhing, forming shapes that seemed to leer at her from the corners of her vision. The tunnel seemed to stretch on forever, an endless maze that threatened to trap them in its depths for eternity.
And then, just as the last vestiges of hope began to slip from her grasp, the tunnel opened up into a vast chamber. The air was colder here, the darkness thicker, almost tangible. Ava’s breath caught in her throat as she took in the sight before her.
In the center of the chamber stood a massive, ancient door, its surface covered in strange symbols that seemed to pulse with an eerie, otherworldly light. The door was unlike anything Ava had ever seen, its surface smooth and seamless, as if it had been carved from a single piece of stone. It radiated power, a silent, ominous force that filled the chamber, making the air hum with tension.
Ava’s companions stared at the door in awe and fear, their faces pale in the dim light. The shadowy figure moved towards it, his steps slow and deliberate, as if drawn by some unseen force. Ava felt a surge of unease as she watched him, her instincts screaming that something was terribly wrong.
“This is it,” the figure said, his voice barely above a whisper. “This is what we’ve been searching for.”
Ava shook her head, her heart pounding in her chest. “What is it? What’s behind that door?”
The figure didn’t answer, his eyes fixed on the door as if entranced. He reached out, his hand trembling as he placed it on the cold, smooth surface. The symbols on the door flared to life, their light growing brighter, more intense. Ava felt a wave of dread wash over her, the air around them growing heavy with anticipation.
The door began to tremble, a low, ominous rumble that shook the ground beneath their feet. Ava took a step back, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps. She could feel the power in the air, a force so strong it made her head spin, her vision blur.
And then, with a deafening roar, the door began to open.
Ava’s heart leaped into her throat as the door slowly swung inward, revealing a blinding light beyond. The light was so bright, so intense, that it hurt to look at it, burning into her retinas, searing her mind. She raised her hand to shield her eyes, but the light was relentless, filling the chamber, banishing the shadows.
But with the light came something elseâa deep, rumbling growl that echoed through the chamber, shaking the very walls. The ground beneath their feet trembled, then shook violently, as if the earth itself was coming alive.
“Run!” the figure shouted, his voice filled with urgency.
Ava didn’t need to be told twice. She turned and ran, her feet pounding against the cold stone floor as the ground heaved and bucked beneath her. The sound of collapsing stone filled the air, a deafening roar that drowned out everything else. The walls of the chamber began to crack, huge chunks of stone falling from the ceiling, crashing down around them.
But the light was still there, chasing them, growing brighter, more intense with each passing second. Ava could feel its heat on her back, could feel the searing pain as it burned into her skin. She ran faster, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her heart pounding in her chest.
The ground beneath her feet gave way, and Ava felt herself falling, her body tumbling through the air. She hit the ground hard, the impact driving the breath from her lungs. For a moment, everything went black, the world spinning out of control.
When she came to, she was lying on her back, staring up at the ceiling of the tunnel. The light was gone, replaced by the familiar, suffocating darkness. The ground was still shaking, the walls of the tunnel groaning under the strain. But the roar of the collapse was fading, the sound growing distant, muffled.

Ava struggled to sit up, her body aching from the fall. She could see her companions scattered around her, some lying motionless, others struggling to rise. The shadowy figure was nowhere to be seen.
“Ava,” a voice called out, weak and trembling. It was one of her companions, a man whose name she couldn’t remember. His face was pale, his eyes wide with fear. “We have to keep moving. The tunnel… it’s collapsing.”
Ava nodded, though every fiber of her being screamed at her to lie down, to give up. But she couldn’t. She had to keep going. There was no other choice.
She got to her feet, her legs trembling beneath her. The ground was still shaking, the tunnel threatening to come down around them at any moment. She staggered forward, grabbing the man’s arm and pulling him along with her.
“We have to find another way out,” she said, her voice shaking with the effort of speaking. “We can’t stay here.”
The man nodded, his eyes darting around the tunnel, searching for any sign of escape. But there was nothingâjust the endless, suffocating darkness.
Then, from somewhere ahead of them, came a soundâa low, deep rumble that sent a chill down Ava’s spine. It was a sound unlike anything she had ever heard, a sound that filled her with a primal, bone-deep fear.
“We have to go,” Ava whispered, her voice barely audible over the roar of the collapsing tunnel. “Now.”
She turned and ran, dragging the man with her. The tunnel shook violently, the walls cracking, huge chunks of stone falling from the ceiling. The sound of the collapse was deafening, a roar that filled her ears, drowning out everything else.
But she kept running, her legs burning with the effort, her lungs screaming for air. She could see the light ahead of her, the faint, flickering light of an opening in the tunnel. She pushed herself harder, her feet pounding against the stone floor, her heart racing in her chest.
The light grew brighter, closer, until finally, with a desperate lunge, Ava burst through the opening and into the cool, fresh air of the outside world. She stumbled forward, her legs giving out beneath her, and fell to the ground, gasping for breath.
She looked back at the tunnel, at the darkness that had almost claimed her. The ground was still shaking, the walls of the tunnel crumbling, collapsing in on themselves. The roar of the collapse grew louder, more intense, until finally, with a deafening crash, the tunnel caved in completely, sealing the entrance and trapping whatever lay within.
Ava lay there, her chest heaving, her body trembling with exhaustion and fear. She had made it out. She had survived.
But the memory of what she had seen, of the light and the roar, would haunt her forever.
