THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 193
Chapter 193: Echoes of the Past
The sky above was a distant, muted gray, like the color of old memories long forgotten. Ava stood in the middle of a field she had not seen in yearsâher childhood home, but not quite. The air hummed with the unsettling stillness of a dream, and in the distance, dark clouds churned on the horizon, edging closer like a silent predator. The field should have been familiar, but it wasn’t. Not anymore. Nothing felt real.
Her younger self was there, just a shadow of a girl, barely more than a silhouette against the backdrop of a time she had long buried. The scene was fractured, like a shattered mirrorâpieces missing, edges sharp and painful. And just beyond the girl, in the corner of Ava’s eye, stood a figure. Shrouded in shadow, silent, and yet, undeniably there.
Ava’s heart raced. The Abyss loomed closer, its presence more palpable than ever. Even in her memories, it lurked, watching, waiting. She tried to reach the girl, tried to call out, but her voice stuck in her throat, as though the weight of the past had shackled her to silence.
The girl turnedâher face pale, her eyes wide with fear. Ava knew that look. She remembered the terror, the helplessness. She had lived it. And now, it was happening all over again.
“Who are you?” the girl whispered, her voice trembling.
The figure in the shadows shifted, but did not answer. Instead, it took a step forward, its presence overwhelming, suffocating. Ava felt the cold grip of dread tightening around her heart.
“Don’t go near him!” Ava’s voice cracked, but the girl didn’t hear her. She was lost in her own nightmare, just as Ava had been.
The figure’s hand reached out, and as it did, the ground beneath them began to twist, turning black, like ink seeping into every corner of the earth. Ava struggled to move, to run, but her feet were glued to the ground. The Abyss was there, feeding on the fear, on the darkness, on the unspoken horror that had haunted her for so long.
“You… let this happen.” The voice came from everywhere and nowhere, slithering into her ears like poison. It was her voice, but not quite. It was deeper, colder, twisted by the weight of guilt and shame. “You let it in. You opened the door, Ava.”
“No…” Ava whispered, but the denial was weak. She could feel itâthe truth. It was there, just beneath the surface, clawing its way into her consciousness. She had let it happen. She had let the Abyss in.
She felt her body shake, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the memories rushed back, faster now, overwhelming her. The shadows tightened their grip, pulling her deeper into the past. And then, just as the darkness was about to swallow her whole, a voice broke through the chaos.
“Ava.”
It was him. The male lead’s voice. Strong, steady, and unwavering, like a lifeline in the middle of the storm. “You can fight this. You’ve done it before. Don’t give up.”
She clung to his words, letting them anchor her in the maelstrom of her mind. But the shadows were relentless. They whispered in her ear, their voices dripping with malice.
“You’re weak,” they hissed. “You’ve always been weak. That’s why you lost everything. That’s why they left. Why they died.”
“No!” Ava’s voice broke as the memories cut deeper, revealing the jagged edges of her past. Faces flashed before her eyesâher family, her friends. People she had loved. People she had failed. And always, always, the Abyss, lurking, feeding on her pain.
“You can’t fight me,” the shadows cooed. “I am you. I have always been you.”
Tears burned her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She wasn’t that girl anymore. She wasn’t the weak, frightened child who had cowered in the face of the darkness. She had grown. She had fought. And she would fight again.
“I’m not alone,” she whispered, her voice trembling, but firm.
The Abyss laughed, a cold, hollow sound that echoed in the depths of her mind. “You think he can save you?” it taunted. “He’s just like the rest. He’ll leave. They always do.”
Ava’s heart clenched at the words, but she shook her head. No. Not this time. She had lost so muchâtoo muchâbut she would not lose him. Not now.
“I won’t let you take him,” she said, her voice stronger now, fueled by a fierce determination. “You can have my past. You can have my pain. But you won’t have him.”
The shadows recoiled, hissing, but Ava didn’t back down. She felt the male lead’s presence beside her, his strength merging with hers, their connection a shield against the encroaching darkness. Together, they stood, facing the Abyss, unyielding.
But then, as if sensing its defeat, the shadowy figure in the memory stirred. Its form shifted, becoming clearer, more defined. Ava’s breath caught in her throat as recognition slammed into her with the force of a tidal wave.
It couldn’t be.
“You…” Ava’s voice shook with disbelief. “It was you?”
The figure stepped forward, the darkness peeling away like a veil, revealing the face beneath. Ava’s heart pounded in her chest as the truth, the terrible, horrifying truth, crashed over her.
The figure smiled, but it was not a kind smile. It was cold, cruel, filled with a malice that chilled her to the bone.
“Did you really think you could escape me?” it sneered. “After everything you’ve done?”
Ava’s knees buckled, but she refused to fall. She wouldn’t give the Abyss the satisfaction. She wouldn’t let it win.

“You’re part of me,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “But I’m not afraid of you anymore.”
The figure’s smile faltered, and for a moment, just a brief, fleeting moment, Ava saw something in its eyesâsomething vulnerable, something afraid.
“You can’t control me,” she continued, her voice growing stronger. “Not anymore.”
The Abyss roared, its shadows lashing out, but Ava stood her ground. She was done running. She was done hiding.
With a final, defiant cry, she raised her hand, and the darkness shattered around her, dissolving into nothingness. The field vanished, the shadows with it, leaving Ava standing in the void, alone.
But she wasn’t alone.
A warm hand touched hers, and she turned to see himâthe male lead, standing beside her, his eyes full of quiet strength.
“You did it,” he said softly, his voice filled with pride. “You faced it.”
Ava nodded, her heart still racing, but the weight on her chest had lifted. The Abyss was still there, somewhere, lurking in the corners of her mind, but it no longer held power over her. Not like before.
“I couldn’t have done it without you,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
He smiled, a small, weary smile, but a smile nonetheless. “You were never alone, Ava. Not then. Not now.”
Ava’s throat tightened with emotion. He was right. She had been fighting for so long, trying to protect herself, trying to protect him. But she hadn’t realized that she didn’t need to fight alone.
Together. They were stronger together.
But as the warmth of their bond filled her, a new shadow fell across the horizon, darker and more ominous than anything she had ever faced.
The Abyss was not gone. Not yet.
And this time, it wouldn’t be so easily defeated.
“Ready?” he asked, his hand still holding hers.
Ava nodded, her eyes fixed on the growing darkness. “Ready.”
Together, they turned toward the looming threat, their hearts steady, their resolve unbreakable. The Abyss might have been part of her, but she wasn’t its prisoner anymore.
And this time, she would fight with everything she had.
