THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 196
Chapter 196: The Return
Leo’s breath was ragged, his pulse pounding as he fought his way through the crumbling reality that threatened to cave in around him. The ground beneath his feet quaked with the sinister tremors of the Abyss’s growing influence. Everywhere he looked, the world seemed to bend and fracture, as if reality itself was tearing apart at the seams. Shadows slithered over the horizon, a dark, hungry tide, seeking to swallow the world whole.
“Stay with me, Ava,” Leo muttered through gritted teeth, his voice barely audible above the chaos. His hands clenched into fists as he surveyed the wreckage. He could feel herâsomewhere out there, trapped, struggling to break free from the Abyss that clung to her like a second skin. But the distance between them felt insurmountable, a chasm that grew wider with every passing second.
The air around him grew thicker, oppressive, as the very atmosphere began to warp under the weight of the Abyss. It felt alive, pulsing with an ancient, malevolent hunger. It was trying to consume him, just as it had consumed her.
“Not today,” Leo growled, his eyes narrowing as he pushed back against the suffocating darkness. His body felt heavy, every movement a battle against the unseen forces that sought to drag him down. But he couldn’t stopânot now. Not when he was so close.
Suddenly, a shiftâa crack in the suffocating air. It was subtle, almost imperceptible, but Leo felt it deep within his bones. A weakening. The Abyss was faltering, even if just for a moment.
A spark of hope ignited in his chest.
“Ava!” he called out, his voice fierce, laced with desperation. “I know you’re there. I know you can hear me!”
Silence answered him at first, the oppressive quiet of the Abyss pressing in from all sides. But then, faint and distant, like a whisper carried on the wind, he heard it. Her voice. Fragile, trembling, but unmistakably hers.
“Leo⊔
His heart clenched painfully at the sound. She was still fighting, still reaching for him despite the Abyss’s cruel hold on her. He had to believe in her. He had to trust that she could find her way back, just as she always had.
The world around him shuddered violently, the fabric of reality stretching thinner with every passing second. The Abyss was pushing harder now, desperate to reclaim its prey. Shadows twisted and coiled at his feet, creeping closer, their touch cold and biting, like frost on his skin.
But Leo refused to yield. His love for her was a flame that would not be extinguished, even in the face of this all-consuming darkness. He had to hold onâfor her, for them.
“Ava,” he whispered, closing his eyes for a brief moment. “You have to come back. I need you to come back.”
In the Abyss, Ava was drowning. She felt the darkness pulling her deeper, the weight of it crushing her lungs, suffocating her from the inside out. Her limbs felt heavy, leaden, as though every part of her was being dragged down into the depths of despair. The whispers were louder now, insistent, venomous.
“You’ll never reach him, Ava,” the Abyss hissed, its voice slithering through her mind like poison. “He’s too far. You’re too weak. Too broken.”
The words struck like daggers, piercing through her already fragile heart. The Abyss was right. She had failed. She had always failedâfailed her family, failed her friends, failed Leo. She was weak. She was broken.
“No,” she gasped, forcing the word out through trembling lips. Her voice wavered, uncertain, but it was there. “I can’tâ I won’t give in.”
But the darkness laughed, mocking her defiance. “You’ve always been alone, Ava. No one will save you. No one can save you.”
Her heart tightened, doubt creeping in like a festering wound. She was sinking again, the weight of her past pulling her down. The faces of those she had lost, the people she had failed, flashed before her eyesâtwisted, accusing.
And then, Leo’s voice. Warm. Steady.
“Ava, I’m here.”
Her breath caught. The sound of his voice was like a lifeline, cutting through the suffocating gloom. He was out there, fighting for her, believing in her.
But the Abyss hissed again, furious. “He’ll leave you, just like everyone else. He’ll see what you areâweak, broken, unworthyâand he’ll abandon you.”
Ava’s chest tightened with fear, the doubt gnawing at her soul. What if the Abyss was right? What if Leo did leave her? What if he saw the darkness inside her and decided she wasn’t worth saving?
“No!” she cried, her voice sharp with defiance. “He won’t. He won’t leave me.”
The Abyss surged, the shadows twisting and writhing around her, suffocating. “You don’t belong with him,” it sneered. “You belong here. In the darkness. With me.”
Ava stumbled, her legs threatening to give way under the weight of the Abyss’s words. She could feel itâthe darkness, the pain. It was hers. It had always been hers.
But Leo’s voice cut through the shadows once more. “Ava, you’re stronger than this. You’re stronger than it.”
Her breath hitched. Stronger? Could she be stronger than this darkness that had haunted her for so long? The darkness that had whispered in her ear, telling her she was nothing, telling her she would always be nothing?
The light in the distance flickered again, brighter this time, more real. It was her hope, her tether. She wasn’t alone. Leo was out there, fighting for her, waiting for her. But she had to find the strength to fight too.

With a shuddering breath, Ava straightened, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. “You’re right,” she whispered, her voice steady now. “You’re a part of me. But you don’t own me.”
The Abyss recoiled, hissing in fury, but Ava didn’t back down. She took a step forward, then another, her eyes fixed on the light. The shadows clawed at her, pulling, dragging, but she pushed on.
“You’ll never win,” the Abyss spat, its voice dripping with venom. “You’ll always be mine.”
But Ava shook her head, determination flaring in her chest. “I’m not yours. Not anymore.”
Each step was a battle, each movement an act of defiance against the Abyss that had tried so hard to break her. But she wasn’t broken. She wasn’t weak. She had Leo. She had herself.
In the real world, Leo felt the shift. The darkness around him pulsed, wavering. The Abyss’s hold was weakening, just as he had hoped. Ava was fighting back. She was coming back.
His heart pounded in his chest as he pressed his hands to the cold, cracking ground. “You can do this, Ava,” he whispered. “I believe in you.”
The shadows around him hissed, swirling angrily, but Leo didn’t flinch. He wouldn’t let the Abyss take her from him. Not now. Not ever.
And then, in the distance, a flicker of light. Faint, but growing stronger. Ava’s light.
Leo’s breath caught in his throat, his chest tightening with a mix of hope and fear. She was so close. But the Abyss wasn’t done yet.
“You think she can come back?” a voice sneered, cold and vicious. “You think she’s strong enough to fight me?”
Leo’s jaw clenched as he rose to his feet, his gaze fixed on the light in the distance. “She’s stronger than you’ll ever know.”
The Abyss laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “She’ll fail. Just like before. She’ll fall, and you’ll watch her break.”
“No,” Leo said, his voice low and dangerous. “She won’t.”
And with those words, the Abyss faltered. The shadows recoiled, their grip on the world loosening, and for the first time, Leo felt a shiftâa real, tangible shift.
Ava was coming back.
In the Abyss, Ava reached the light. It was blinding now, warm and inviting, and as she stepped into it, she felt the weight of the darkness begin to lift. The voices of the Abyss, once so loud and overpowering, began to fade, replaced by something elseâsomething stronger.
Her own voice.
“I am not afraid of you,” she whispered, her hands trembling as she reached for the light. “You are part of me, but you will not control me.”
The light grew brighter, enveloping her, and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, Ava feltâŠfree.
In the distance, she heard Leo’s voice again, stronger now, calling her name.
“Ava, come back to me.”
She took a deep breath, her heart pounding in her chest. She was ready. She could do this.
But just as she reached out for him, just as she felt the warmth of his presence, the Abyss surged one final time, a wave of darkness crashing down around her.
And thenânothing.
Leo’s eyes snapped open, his breath catching in his throat. The world was silent, still. The shadows were gone, the Abyss receding back into whatever dark corner it had come from.
But AvaâŠwhere was Ava?
Panic surged in his chest as he scrambled to his feet, his eyes scanning the horizon. “Ava!” he shouted, his voice raw with desperation.
And then, there she was.
Standing in the distance, bathed in the soft glow of the rising sun, was Ava.
She was back.
