THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 213
Chapter 213: The Abyss Stares Back
The wind screamed through the crumbling ruins, a twisted, shrill cry that echoed through the hollow shells of forgotten buildings. Ava stood at the edge of a broken city, her body trembling as the Abyss churned within her, threatening to break free. Dark clouds twisted in the sky, spiraling downward like a vortex, pulling her toward the inevitable. Her mind buzzed with the Abyss’s whispers—seductive, relentless, promising power, control, freedom.
But all she felt was fear.
“Ava!” Lucas’s voice pierced the darkness, sharp with panic. He stood on the outskirts of the ruins, his hand outstretched as if he could pull her back from the precipice. His heart hammered in his chest as he watched her, helpless against the storm raging within her. His presence was her anchor, her only tether to the light, but the pull of the Abyss was overwhelming. It was seductive, and it wanted her.
Ava’s fingers twitched uncontrollably, and in a moment of weakness, she lost her grip on reality. The Abyss surged forward, pouring from her in a wave of dark energy. The force was cataclysmic, ripping through the ruins, obliterating stone and dust alike. The ground trembled beneath her feet as if even the earth feared the power within her.
Lucas could do nothing but watch as the destruction unfolded before his eyes, the dread in his chest growing tighter with every heartbeat. His voice caught in his throat. He had never seen her like this—so utterly consumed, so beyond his reach. The woman he loved was vanishing before him, piece by piece, as the Abyss devoured her.
When the storm of energy subsided, Ava collapsed, gasping for breath, her body trembling uncontrollably. Her hands, normally steady, now shook as though even they had become a conduit for the Abyss’s chaos. She dug her nails into the earth, trying to ground herself, to hold onto what little control she had left.
“Ava!” Lucas was by her side in an instant, his arms reaching for her, desperate to offer comfort. But she recoiled from his touch as though he burned her.
“Stay back!” Her voice cracked, wild with fear. “I—I can’t control it! You saw what I did—I’ll hurt you, Lucas. I’ll hurt everyone.” The darkness in her eyes was not just fear—it was despair, a deep-rooted belief that she had already lost this battle.
“Ava…” His voice softened, breaking as he knelt beside her, his hands hovering above her trembling form. “You’re not alone in this. You don’t have to do this alone.”
But her fear of losing control was too great. She pulled herself away, shivering. “You don’t understand. I can feel it—every time I try to suppress it, the Abyss grows stronger. It wants to consume me, and I… I can’t stop it.”
The night air grew colder, more oppressive, as the Abyss’s whispers intensified. They filled her mind, wrapping around her thoughts like chains, pulling her deeper into the darkness. Lucas could see it in her eyes—the flicker of doubt, the creeping terror that she was losing herself, that soon there would be nothing left but the Abyss.
Before Lucas could say anything more, figures emerged from the shadows, stepping cautiously into the moonlight. They were clad in tattered, ancient robes, their faces hidden beneath hoods that obscured their identities. They moved with purpose, their eyes fixed on Ava, and though they spoke no words, their presence was heavy with intent.
Lucas rose to his feet, instinctively positioning himself between the strangers and Ava. His hand gripped the hilt of his sword, ready to defend her from whatever danger these strangers posed. “Who are you?” he demanded, his voice low, dangerous.
The figure at the front stepped forward, pushing back their hood to reveal the face of an elder woman, her features weathered by time and hardship. Her eyes, though ancient, gleamed with a strange, unsettling knowledge. “We are survivors,” she said, her voice raspy and deliberate. “We come from the ancient civilization that once tried to control the Abyss. And now, we offer her salvation.”
Ava looked up, her breath catching in her throat. “Salvation?” The word sounded too good to be true, like a distant dream she no longer dared to believe in. She had been fighting the Abyss for so long, and now these strangers appeared, offering a way out. But at what cost?
The elder woman’s gaze bore into Ava, and for a moment, it felt as though she was seeing into the very depths of her soul. “Yes,” the woman continued, her tone soft but unyielding. “But it comes with a price. The Abyss cannot be destroyed, but it can be bound. Permanently. However, to bind it, we must first break you.”
“Break me?” Ava whispered, dread curling around her heart.
“The Abyss is inside you, child. To lock it away, we must shatter the vessel,” the woman said, her voice cruel in its honesty. “Your soul would be the price. The ritual will contain the Abyss, but it may leave nothing of you behind.”
“No,” Lucas growled, stepping forward, his jaw clenched with fury. “She’s not doing that. She’s not sacrificing her soul for this.”
But Ava’s thoughts were already spiraling. Could she live with the Abyss devouring her, growing stronger each day? Or was it better to risk everything for the chance at freedom, even if it meant losing herself? The Abyss coiled around her, whispering louder now, sensing her uncertainty.
“Is that the only way?” she asked, her voice trembling. “Is there really no other choice?”
The elder woman’s expression remained unreadable, but her words cut like a knife. “There are no easy choices when dealing with the Abyss. It takes what it wants. But the choice is yours. Bind it now, or let it consume you.”
Lucas stepped closer, desperation in his eyes. “Ava, don’t listen to them. There has to be another way. We’ll find it—together. You don’t have to do this.”
Tears welled in Ava’s eyes as she looked at him, torn between the man she loved and the darkness threatening to destroy her. She wanted to believe in his strength, in their strength, but the Abyss was relentless, and every moment she fought against it, she felt herself slipping further into the void.
“I don’t know how much longer I can fight this, Lucas,” she admitted, her voice breaking. “Every day, it gets stronger. Every day, I lose a piece of myself. What if… what if one day, there’s nothing left to save?”
Lucas grabbed her hand, pulling her close. “Then we fight for that day, Ava. Together. You don’t have to face this alone.”
But even as he spoke, the Abyss surged within her again, and Ava gasped, clutching her chest as the darkness wrapped tighter around her heart. She could feel it, pressing against her soul, threatening to consume her entirely. Her body shook violently, and before she could stop it, a wave of dark energy erupted from her once more, this time stronger, more chaotic than before.
Lucas was thrown backward, his body hitting the ground hard, the air knocked from his lungs. “Ava!” he gasped, struggling to get back to his feet.
But Ava was beyond hearing him now. The Abyss was clawing at her, tearing her apart from the inside. She screamed, her voice raw with pain and terror, as her body was engulfed in a torrent of darkness.
“Ava!” Lucas’s voice was barely audible over the roar of the Abyss, but she couldn’t stop it. She couldn’t control it.

Suddenly, the elder woman stepped forward, her hand outstretched toward Ava. “Enough!” she commanded, her voice booming with authority. Ancient runes etched into the earth around them began to glow, pulsing with a strange, otherworldly energy. The air shimmered, and for a brief moment, the Abyss recoiled.
Ava fell to her knees, gasping for breath, her body trembling uncontrollably. The dark energy that had consumed her moments before seemed to withdraw, but it lingered, just beneath the surface, waiting for its next opportunity to strike.
The elder woman turned to Lucas, her expression grim. “She cannot fight this alone. You know that now. If you love her, you must accept that this is her only chance.”
Lucas stared at the woman, fury and fear warring within him. He wanted to believe that there was another way, that they could find a way to save her without risking her soul. But the reality was brutal, and he could no longer ignore the truth.
The Abyss had her.
And if they did nothing, it would destroy her.
Ava, still trembling on the ground, looked up at Lucas, her eyes filled with tears. “I’m scared,” she whispered, her voice broken. “I don’t want to lose myself.”
Lucas knelt beside her, pulling her into his arms, holding her tight as though he could keep the darkness at bay through sheer will alone. “I won’t let you go,” he promised, his voice thick with emotion. “Whatever happens, we face it together.”
But even as he spoke, the Abyss whispered, a cruel voice in the back of Ava’s mind, taunting her with promises of power, of freedom.
And in that moment, Ava knew—whatever choice she made, there would be no turning back.
