THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 217
Chapter 217: “Echoes of Forgotten Love
Ava stood on the edge of nothingness, her breath shallow, the precipice below pulling at her with an invisible force, promising power, freedom, oblivion—all in one seductive whisper. The Abyss stretched before her, swirling with shadows that shifted like a living thing, alive with its own twisted hunger. The cold wind lashed against her face, but it was the voice inside her head that made her shiver.
“Embrace me,” the childlike entity purred, its voice slithering through her mind. “All your pain, all your confusion… it can end. All you have to do is step forward.”
Ava’s heart thudded violently in her chest, the sound echoing in her ears. Somewhere in the distance, Lucas’s voice called out, muffled, desperate, begging her to step back. His words, though familiar, felt like a distant memory—faint, like a half-forgotten dream.
“Stay with me, Ava,” Lucas’s voice pleaded. “Don’t give in to it. This isn’t who you are!”
But who was she? That question echoed through the shattered fragments of her mind. Her memories, once a solid foundation, were now pieces of broken glass, each shard reflecting a different face, a different moment. And none of them made sense. The harder she tried to grasp them, the more they slipped through her fingers.
“You are nothing,” the Abyss whispered, its voice soft but cold, weaving itself into her thoughts like a dark lullaby. “You are lost, forgotten… But with me, you will be everything. I will make you a goddess.”
In the shadows, a vision flickered before her. She saw herself, standing tall, bathed in the dark light of the Abyss, her eyes glowing with power. The world bowed before her, every knee bent, every voice silenced. She was untouchable, unstoppable—alone.
Ava flinched. There was no Lucas in that vision. No warmth, no love. Only power. Only the cold, isolating grip of control. She tried to cling to the echoes of his voice, but they were fading, growing more distant as the Abyss tugged at her, pulling her closer, wrapping its tendrils around her heart.
“You don’t need him,” the Abyss hissed, its voice laced with contempt. “He only wants to keep you weak, to chain you with his love. But I… I will make you strong. No more fear. No more pain.”
Ava’s hand hovered over the edge, trembling as the darkness below beckoned her. The temptation was intoxicating. She had spent so long in fear, in confusion, wandering through her fractured memories like a lost child. The Abyss offered her clarity, control. She would no longer have to struggle, no longer have to wonder who she was or why she was here. She would be more than human. She would be everything.
But Lucas’s voice—faint, like the wind—persisted. “Ava… You are not this. You are so much more than the Abyss.”
His words felt like an anchor, but the Abyss was stronger. It twisted his voice, distorting it into something cruel. “He lies,” the entity snarled, its tone turning sharp and venomous. “He has always lied. His love is nothing but a cage.”
Ava blinked, her vision blurring as the Abyss showed her more twisted memories. She saw Lucas holding her back, standing in her way, his love binding her like chains. Each scene cut deeper into her heart, making her question everything—his motives, their connection. Was his love truly meant to protect her, or had it always been a means to control her?
“He fears your power,” the Abyss continued, its voice smooth, serpentine. “He knows that if you embrace what you are meant to be, you will no longer need him.”
For a moment, Ava faltered. The images the Abyss showed her felt so real, so undeniable. Lucas had always wanted her to hold back, to restrain herself, to fear the very thing the Abyss promised. Maybe he had never really loved her—maybe he had only ever wanted to control her.
But then, through the fog of doubt, Ava saw a different memory—one the Abyss couldn’t distort. She saw Lucas standing beside her, wounded and exhausted, holding her in his arms as the world crumbled around them. He hadn’t tried to control her; he had fought for her, with her. His love had never been a cage—it had been a lifeline.
“No,” Ava whispered, her voice trembling but resolute. “He… he loves me.”
The Abyss recoiled, its presence darkening. “Foolish girl,” it spat, the childlike tone turning into something monstrous. “You think his love can save you? His love will only destroy you.”
The ground beneath Ava’s feet began to crumble, the very edge of the precipice cracking as the Abyss grew more aggressive, more desperate to consume her. But as the world shattered around her, Lucas’s voice broke through, clearer now, stronger.
“Ava, you don’t need to choose between power and love. You are both. Don’t let the Abyss take that from you.”
His words pierced through the chaos, cutting through the twisted lies of the Abyss like a blade. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Ava saw the truth. The Abyss wasn’t offering her power; it was offering her oblivion. It wanted her to forget, to abandon everything that made her who she was.
“Do not listen to him!” the Abyss roared, its voice shaking the very air around her. “He is nothing! I am your destiny!”
Ava shook her head, stepping back from the edge. “No,” she said, her voice steadying. “You don’t control me.”
But the Abyss wasn’t done. It lashed out, its dark tendrils wrapping around her, pulling her toward the edge, trying to drag her into its depths. Ava fought against it, but the pull was overwhelming, suffocating. The darkness wrapped around her throat, choking her, drowning her in its promises of power and release.
And then, in her mind’s eye, she saw him. Lucas. Standing at the edge of the darkness, his hand outstretched, his eyes filled with love and determination.
“Ava,” he whispered, his voice a lifeline, “I won’t let you go.”
With a surge of strength, Ava reached out, grasping onto that vision of Lucas, holding onto the memory of his love, his warmth, his unwavering faith in her. The Abyss shrieked, its hold on her weakening as she fought back, pulling herself away from the edge.
“You cannot defy me!” the Abyss screamed, its form twisting and writhing in fury. “I am eternal! I am inevitable!”
But Ava’s resolve was stronger now. She wouldn’t let the Abyss control her, wouldn’t let it steal her memories, her love, her life. She wasn’t a puppet, wasn’t a vessel for its darkness.
“I am more than you,” she said, her voice ringing out clear and strong. “I am Ava. And I choose my own path.”

The Abyss howled in rage, but its power was waning, its grip slipping as Ava stood firm. She felt the darkness retreating, felt the cold tendrils of fear and doubt loosening their hold on her mind. Slowly, the world around her began to shift, the shadows receding as the Abyss was forced back.
But even as it withdrew, it whispered one last warning, its voice dripping with venom.
“You may have won this battle, but the war is far from over. I will return, Ava. And when I do, I will consume everything you love.”
Ava stood at the edge, watching as the Abyss slithered away, retreating into the depths of the void. She knew it wasn’t gone—not truly. But for now, she had won.
Behind her, Lucas appeared, his face pale, his eyes filled with relief and love. He rushed toward her, pulling her into his arms, holding her as if he never wanted to let go.
“I thought I lost you,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
“You didn’t,” Ava replied, her voice soft but steady. “I’m still here.”
But even as she said the words, a shadow lingered at the edge of her vision. She knew the Abyss would return. It wasn’t over. Not yet.
And when it did, she would be ready.
The final echo of the Abyss’s voice hung in the air like a curse, a promise of what was yet to come. Ava pulled away from Lucas, her eyes darkened with resolve.
“Whatever comes next,” she whispered, her gaze fixed on the horizon, “we’ll face it together.”
But deep inside, a small part of her wondered—had she truly escaped the Abyss? Or had she merely delayed the inevitable?
