THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 218
Chapter 218: Whispers of Power
The void hummed. It wasn’t a sound, not in the traditional sense, but a vibration, an undulating pulse that drummed through the air, shaking the ground beneath Ava’s feet. The darkness around her felt alive, coiling and writhing like it had a will of its own, and in its center stood the Abyss. A towering, shapeless mass of shadows that both beckoned and repelled. Its whispers caressed her mind, and with every passing moment, it felt harder to resist.
Her hand, raised just inches from the abyssal tendrils, trembled. She could feel the darkness tugging at her, its power seductive, promising freedomâfreedom from fear, from pain, from all the confusion that had suffocated her since her memories began to fracture.
“You can have it all, Ava,” the Abyss whispered. “No more doubt, no more fear. Just… power.”
Power. The word echoed in her mind, soothing and terrifying at once. In the swirling, chaotic visions the Abyss had shown her, she’d seen herself as a queen. A ruler of realms, bending the fabric of reality with a mere thought. She was untouchable. Immortal. Alone.
Her fingers brushed the edge of the void, and she gasped. It was cold, impossibly so, yet it burnedâa fire that ignited her soul, a taste of the power she could wield. But at what cost?
Meanwhile, in the distance…
Lucas ran, his breath labored, his legs burning with each step. The ruins of the world around him were crumbling, pieces of stone and debris falling like rain from the disintegrating sky. Every breath he took felt like it was stolen from the very air itself, but he couldn’t stop. He had to reach herâbefore she was lost forever.
His heart thundered in his chest, not just from exertion, but from fear. Fear of what was waiting for him in the abyss. Fear of losing Ava. He couldn’t lose her. Not like this.
“Ava!” His voice was hoarse, barely rising above the sound of the collapsing world. He felt the Abyss closing in, like an oppressive weight, suffocating him with each step forward. But he pressed on, driven by the need to reach her, to pull her back from the brink.
The ground beneath him shook violently, and he stumbled, nearly falling into a gaping chasm that opened suddenly at his feet. He cursed under his breath, forcing himself back up, eyes scanning the distance for any sign of her.
There! Through the haze, he saw her silhouette, standing motionless at the edge of the abyss, her hand raised toward the void.
“NO!” he screamed, the word tearing from his throat with raw desperation. His legs moved faster than before, driven by a primal urgency. He had to reach her before she made the choice that would destroy them both.
Back at the edge of the void…
Ava hesitated. Her fingers hovered inches from the swirling mass of darkness. The Abyss’s voice was sweet, intoxicating, filling her mind with thoughts of power, control, freedom. It would all be hers if she just… let go. But somewhere, faint and distant, she heard another voice. A voice full of pain. A voice that made her chest tighten with an emotion she couldn’t name.
“Ava!” It called again, closer this time. Desperate.
She blinked, her eyes flicking away from the void for just a second, searching the darkness. The world around her was crumblingârocks and ruins collapsing into nothingness. But she could still feel him. Lucas. The name slipped into her mind unbidden, familiar, yet strange.
“Don’t listen to him,” the Abyss hissed, its voice sharp and cutting now. “He is nothing. He is weak. You have seen it in your memoriesâhe cannot save you. Only I can.”
For a moment, the vision of Lucas’s face flashed before herâa fragment of a memory, fractured and incomplete, but enough to send a tremor through her heart. He had been there. He had always been there, hadn’t he? She could almost feel his warmth, hear his voice telling her that everything would be okay. That she wasn’t alone.
But the Abyss’s voice cut through those memories like a knife.
“He left you,” it whispered, venomous and cold. “He failed you. He betrayed you.”
The image of Lucas twisted in her mind, morphing into something darker, colder. His face distorted, cruel and indifferent. She saw him turn away from her, saw him walking into the shadows, leaving her to face the darkness alone.
“See?” the Abyss cooed. “He abandoned you when you needed him most. But Iâ I can make you strong. Stronger than him. Stronger than anyone.”
The darkness surged forward, curling around her fingers like a lover’s embrace. It was so easy, so tempting to give in. What did it matter if the memories were real or not? What did it matter if Lucas had betrayed her, or if she had forgotten him entirely? In the Abyss, none of that would matter. She would be beyond it all. Beyond pain, beyond loss, beyond love.
But even as the Abyss pulled her closer, that flicker of warmth remained, small and fragile, but persistent.
“Remember, Ava…” a voice whisperedâLucas’s voice.
She froze, her heart clenching painfully. The Abyss hissed in frustration, its tendrils tightening around her, trying to drown out the sound of his voice.
“You know me,” Lucas’s voice echoed in her mind. “You know us.”
The memories were fractured, broken beyond repair, but there was a truth there. She could feel it, buried beneath the fog, beneath the lies the Abyss was weaving around her.
“I… I don’t know…” Ava whispered, her voice trembling.
“You do,” Lucas’s voice was stronger now, closer. “You feel it. Deep down, you know who I am. Who we are.”

She wanted to believe him. She wanted to trust that feeling in her chest, that faint flicker of warmth that hadn’t been extinguished by the Abyss. But the darkness was relentless. It tugged at her, filled her mind with doubt, with fear.
“He’s lying to you,” the Abyss snarled. “He is weak. He could not save you then, and he cannot save you now.”
Ava closed her eyes, torn between the two voices. The pull of the Abyss was overwhelming, its promises so tempting, so easy. But Lucas… Lucas was real. She remembered his touch, his voice, the way he had looked at her with such fierce determination, such love. And for a moment, just a moment, she remembered what it felt like to love him back.
“I… I don’t want to forget,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
The Abyss recoiled, its tendrils pulling back slightly, as if sensing her resistance.
“You belong to me,” it growled, its voice filled with malice now. “You will be mine, Ava. You will always be mine.”
Ava shook her head, her eyes opening. The darkness still called to her, but the memory of Lucas was stronger now, clearer. She remembered him. She remembered them.
“I won’t let you take her!” Lucas’s voice rang out, loud and clear now.
Ava turned, her heart leaping at the sight of him. He was there, standing at the edge of the ruins, his face streaked with dirt and sweat, but his eyes burning with determination.
“Ava, don’t listen to it!” Lucas called out, his voice raw with emotion. “You’re stronger than this. You are Ava. You’re my Ava. And I’m not going to let you go. Not again.”
The Abyss howled in fury, its darkness surging forward, but Ava stepped back, pulling her hand away from the void.
“No,” she whispered, her voice gaining strength. “I’m not yours.”
Lucas’s eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, time seemed to stop. The world around them crumbled, the darkness seething with rage, but in that moment, all that mattered was him. All that mattered was the choice she had to make.
“Ava!” Lucas reached out to her, his hand extended, pleading.
The Abyss shrieked, its darkness twisting and contorting, but Ava took a step toward Lucas, her heart pounding in her chest. She had made her choice.
But just as her fingers reached for his, the ground beneath her gave way, and the void swallowed her whole.
