THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 220
Chapter 220: A Step Towards Shadows
Ava’s breath hitched as her trembling hand hovered mere inches from the Abyss, her fingers curled, wanting, hesitating. The tendrils of darkness pulsated, slithering closer to her, like a serpent waiting to strike. The malevolent force coiled around her, whispering, seducing, pulling her in. It spoke in her mind, a voice so familiar yet foreign, promising salvation but offering damnation. The air around her seemed thicker, suffocating, as if the Abyss itself was alive, breathing, waiting to swallow her whole.
“Ava!” Lucas’s voice cut through the barrier between them like a blade. His desperate cry reverberated in the crumbling ruins, filled with urgency and pain. He fought to break through, to reach her, but every effort only made the Abyss tighten its grip. Ava flinched, her heart clenching painfully at the sound of his voice, but the Abyss was louder now, more insistent.
“He failed you,” the Abyss whispered. “He will fail you again.”
The words slithered into her mind, twisting like knives. Ava’s vision blurred, flashes of her past flickering before her eyes. Memories of Lucas, of their love, of moments so precious they felt sacredânow tainted, now poisoned. The Abyss showed her twisted reflections of their past, scenes that played over and over in her head. Lucas’s smile, once filled with warmth, now cold and distant. His touch, once gentle, now felt like a betrayal.
She gasped, her breath shaky, as the ground beneath her feet began to shift, the ruins around them crumbling into nothingness. The Abyss was consuming everything, and she could feel itâfeel the pull, the seduction, the promise of freedom. Freedom from the pain. Freedom from the endless doubt. It was all within her grasp, if only she reached out.
“You are nothing without me,” the Abyss whispered, its voice smooth, seductive. “You are weak. You are lost. I am the only truth.”
Ava’s hand trembled. Weak. Lost. The words echoed in her mind, reverberating like a dark symphony. She had been weakâweak when she trusted, weak when she loved. And what had it brought her? Pain. Betrayal. Abandonment. She could feel the darkness clawing at her insides, the coldness spreading, seeping into every crack, every wound, every scar. It promised to make her whole again, to heal what was broken.
“Do you not see, Ava?” The Abyss’s voice was sharp now, cutting. “You have always been alone. No one can save you. He cannot save you. Lucas was never meant for you.”
Her heart twisted painfully at those words. Memoriesâdistorted, twisted memoriesâflashed before her eyes. Lucas, turning away. Lucas, leaving her behind. She had seen him walk away once before. Hadn’t she? The Abyss fed on those moments, distorting them further until truth and lie were indistinguishable.
“He betrayed you,” the Abyss hissed, its voice curling tighter around her, pulling her in. “He will betray you again.”
The vision it showed her was unbearable: Lucas, standing side by side with Zephyr, their voices a low murmur, eyes gleaming with malice. Ava watched as they plotted, as Lucas’s voiceâso familiar, so belovedâspoke of using her, of discarding her once she was no longer useful. Her heart shattered in that moment, the cracks spreading, deepening. Was this the truth? Was this who he had always been?
“No⊔ Ava’s voice was small, fragile, breaking under the weight of her doubt.
“Yes,” the Abyss whispered, its voice now a caress, a lover’s promise. “Embrace it, Ava. Embrace the truth. Lucas is no savior. He never was.”
But just as her fingers inched closer to the Abyss, she heard itâa faint whisper. Her own voice, somewhere deep inside, resisting. It was weak, but it was there, fighting to break through the fog of darkness clouding her mind.
“Lucas⊔ Ava’s voice trembled as she whispered his name, barely audible over the roar of the Abyss. The memory of his touch, the warmth of his embrace, flickered in her mind like a dying flame. She clung to it, desperate, but the Abyss was relentless, suffocating her in its cold embrace.
“You belong to me,” the Abyss growled, its tendrils tightening around her. “There is no other truth. Only me.”
“NO!” Ava screamed, the word tearing from her throat, raw and filled with agony. She staggered back, her hands flying to her head as if trying to tear the darkness from her mind. “You’re lying! You’re twisting everything!”
The Abyss laughed, its dark, cruel laughter reverberating in the air. “Am I? What do you really know of love, Ava? What has love ever done for you, except tear you apart?”
Her breath came in ragged gasps, her heart pounding in her chest. Love. The word felt foreign on her lips now, distant, like something from another life. What if the Abyss was right? What if love was just another chain, another way to control her? To make her weak?
Lucas’s voice echoed in the distance, desperate, filled with anguish. “Ava! Don’t do this! Don’t let it win!”
But his words were fading, distorted, drowned out by the Abyss. Ava could barely hear him now, could barely feel anything but the cold, creeping darkness enveloping her. The Abyss offered her power, control. Freedom. And yetâŠ
“You are mine,” the Abyss whispered, pulling her deeper into its embrace. “There is no love. Only power. Only me.”
Ava gasped as the darkness closed in, suffocating her, pulling her down into its depths. But thenâjust as she was about to fallâsomething broke through. A flash of light. A memory, vivid and unbroken.
She remembered Lucas standing before her, his eyes filled with pain and love. She remembered the moment he sacrificed something precious for herâa moment the Abyss had tried to erase. The vision the Abyss had shown her of Lucas’s betrayal crumbled, shattering like glass. The truth, the real truth, surged back into her mind, and she knew then what the Abyss was hiding. Lucas had never betrayed her. He had fought for her, sacrificed for her.
“I remember,” Ava whispered, her voice steady, resolute. “I remember what you tried to take from me.”
The Abyss recoiled, its tendrils writhing in fury. “No! You belong to me, Ava! You will always belong to me!”
But Ava stepped back, her resolve hardening. The darkness hissed, its grip loosening, and she felt a sliver of herself return. Lucas was real. Their love was real. The Abyss had tried to steal that from her, but it had failed. She would not let it win.
“AVA!” Lucas’s voice was closer now, clearer, as if he had finally broken through. His hand extended toward her, his eyes filled with desperation, with love. “Please. Come back to me.”
Ava’s heart pounded in her chest. The Abyss’s whispers were still there, still insistent, still clawing at her, but she could see the truth now. The choice before her was clearer than ever. The power of the Abyss, or the love she had fought so hard to hold onto.
And then, in the midst of her turmoil, another figure appearedâclad in shadow, her eyes cold, calculating. The mysterious woman stepped forward, her presence commanding, and for a moment, the Abyss seemed to retreat.

“So,” the woman said, her voice smooth, chilling, “you think you can defy the Abyss? You think love can save you?”
Ava’s breath caught in her throat as the woman’s words struck her like a blow. The woman’s gaze was piercing, as if she could see every fear, every doubt that lingered in Ava’s heart.
“I once stood where you stand,” the woman said softly, stepping closer. “I, too, thought love could save me. But I was wrong.” She extended her hand, her eyes dark, hollow. “Join me, Ava. Embrace the Abyss. It is the only truth. It is the only way to survive.”
Ava stared at the woman, her mind reeling. The Abyss was still whispering, still pulling her in, but Lucas’s voiceâhis loveâwas stronger now, anchoring her, pulling her back from the edge.
“Choose, Ava,” the woman said, her voice like ice. “Power⊠or love. You cannot have both.”
Ava’s hand shook as she looked from the woman to Lucas, her heart torn in two. The darkness called to her, promising power, control, freedom. But Lucas⊠Lucas was her light, her truth.
“I can’t⊔ Ava whispered, her voice breaking. “I can’t choose.”
The woman’s smile was cold, unforgiving. “Then you will be lost.”
The Abyss surged forward again, its tendrils wrapping around Ava, pulling her down into its depths. She gasped, her vision blurring as the darkness consumed her. And just as she felt herself slipping away, Lucas’s hand grasped hers, pulling her back from the brink.
“Ava!” His voice was filled with desperation, with love. “You are not alone! You never were! Fight, Ava! Please, fight!”
Ava’s heart swelled with emotion as Lucas’s words broke through the darkness, shattering the Abyss’s hold on her. She could feel the warmth of his touch, the strength of his love, pulling her back, pulling her home.
And in that moment, Ava knew. The Abyss had no power over her. Not anymore.
With a cry of defiance, Ava pulled away from the darkness, breaking free of its hold. The tendrils of the Abyss writhed and hissed, but she was stronger now. She was whole. And as she stood before the Abyss, her hand still clasped in Lucas’s, she knew that love was the only truth that mattered.
The Abyss recoiled, its dark whispers fading into the void, and the woman in shadows disappeared, her form dissolving into nothingness.
Ava collapsed into Lucas’s arms, her heart pounding, her breath ragged. She had chosen. And she had won.
For now.
