THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 32
Chapter 32: The Shadow’s Warning
“We can’t trust them, Liam,” Ava said, her voice trembling with frustration. “Not after everything that’s happened.”
Liam leaned against the mantel, his gaze steady and calm. “We don’t have a choice, Ava. If what they say is true, we’re in more danger than we thought.”
Ava stopped and turned to face him, her eyes blazing. “And what if it’s another trap? What if they’re leading us into another ambush?”
Before Liam could respond, the door creaked open, and a hooded figure stepped inside. The room fell silent, the only sound the crackling of the fire. The figure pulled back their hood, revealing a gaunt face with sharp, calculating eyes.
“I can assure you, Miss Ava, I am not your enemy,” the informant said, their voice low and measured. “But you have very little time to act.”
Ava crossed her arms, skepticism etched on her face. “You expect us to believe you after all the betrayals we’ve faced? Give us one good reason why we shouldn’t throw you out right now.”
The informant reached into their coat and produced a worn envelope, tossing it onto the desk between them. “Because this contains evidence that someone within your own family is plotting against you. If you don’t believe me, see for yourself.”
Liam stepped forward and picked up the envelope, his fingers hesitating before he tore it open. Inside were photographs, documents, and a detailed map. He spread them out on the desk, his expression darkening with each piece of evidence he examined.
“This… this can’t be,” Liam muttered, his eyes meeting Ava’s. “It’s all here. The meetings, the transactions… everything.”
Ava’s breath caught in her throat as she scanned the documents. Her hands trembled as she picked up a photograph, her eyes narrowing as she recognized the face. “Uncle Robert,” she whispered, a mixture of anger and disbelief in her voice. “He’s behind this?”
The informant nodded. “He’s been orchestrating this for years, using your family’s resources to build his own empire. If you don’t stop him now, he’ll take everything from you.”
Ava felt a wave of nausea wash over her. She turned away, struggling to compose herself. “Why are you helping us? What’s in it for you?”
The informant’s eyes softened, a hint of vulnerability breaking through their stoic facade. “Let’s just say I have my own reasons for wanting to see Robert’s downfall. But we don’t have time to delve into my motives. He’s planning something big, and it’s happening soon.”
Liam stepped closer to Ava, his hand resting gently on her shoulder. “We have to trust them, Ava. At least enough to stop Robert. If we don’t, everything we’ve fought for will be for nothing.”
Ava looked up at him, her eyes searching his for reassurance. She nodded slowly, turning back to the informant. “Alright. What do we need to do?”
Before the informant could respond, a loud crash echoed through the house, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps. The three of them froze, their eyes darting towards the door.
“They’ve found me,” the informant whispered, their face paling. “We need to get out of here, now.”
Liam grabbed Ava’s hand, pulling her towards a hidden passage behind the bookshelf. “This way. We can’t let them get to us.”
The informant followed, but just as they reached the passage, a masked assailant burst into the room, gun drawn. Ava’s heart pounded in her chest as she glanced back, seeing the informant grapple with the attacker.
“We have to help them!” Ava shouted, trying to pull free from Liam’s grip.
Liam hesitated, his eyes locked on the struggle before them. “We can’t, Ava. If we stay, we’ll all be caught. We need to get out of here and regroup.”
Ava’s eyes filled with tears as she watched the informant fight for their life. She knew Liam was right, but leaving them behind felt like another betrayal. “I can’t just leave them, Liam!”
The assailant overpowered the informant, knocking them to the ground. They turned their attention to Ava and Liam, raising their weapon. In a split-second decision, Liam shoved Ava into the passage and slammed the door shut.
“Ava, go! I’ll hold them off!” Liam shouted, his voice muffled by the thick walls.
“No, Liam!” Ava cried, pounding on the door. “Don’t do this!”
The sounds of the struggle grew fainter as she stumbled through the dark passage, tears blurring her vision. She could hear the distant echoes of shouts and gunfire, but she kept moving, driven by a desperate need to survive.
Finally, she emerged into a hidden courtyard, the cold night air biting at her skin. She collapsed against the stone wall, her sobs wracking her body. She felt the weight of their predicament pressing down on her, the uncertainty of what lay ahead overwhelming.
As she caught her breath, a figure emerged from the shadows, their face obscured by darkness. Ava tensed, ready to defend herself, but the figure stepped into the light, revealing a familiar face.
“Liam?” Ava whispered, her voice trembling with hope and fear.
He nodded, his face bruised and bloodied, but alive. “We need to move, Ava. There are more of them coming.”

Liam nodded, his eyes reflecting her resolve. “Together. We’ll do this together.”
Behind them, in the depths of the mansion, the informant lay unconscious, a mysterious figure standing over them. The figure bent down, whispering something in the informant’s ear before disappearing into the darkness, leaving a chilling promise of more to come.
