THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 68
High-Stakes Rescue
“We have to move fast,” Liam whispered, his voice barely audible over the distant hum of the city. “The Phantom’s operatives will be on high alert.”
The air was thick with tension as Ava crouched behind the cover of a dense bush, her eyes locked on the heavily fortified building ahead. The moonlight glinted off the razor wire atop the high walls, casting eerie shadows across the compound. She exchanged a glance with Liam, who nodded grimly, his eyes reflecting the same steely determination.
Ava’s mind raced, every second bringing them closer to the moment of truth. “Stick to the plan,” she replied, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. “We get in, rescue the ally, and get out before they know what hit them.”
They moved as one, slipping through the shadows toward a small, unguarded section of the wall. Liam pulled out a pair of wire cutters, his hands moving with practiced efficiency as he snipped through the fence. Within moments, they had created a small opening just large enough to slip through.
Inside the compound, the air felt heavier, charged with a sense of impending danger. Ava’s heart pounded in her chest as they crept toward the main building, hugging the walls to stay out of sight. She could feel the weight of their mission pressing down on her, every step a reminder of the high stakes involved.
Suddenly, a faint noise reached her earsâa low, rhythmic thumping. She held up a hand, signaling Liam to stop. “Do you hear that?”
Liam tilted his head, listening intently. “It’s coming from the east wing,” he whispered. “Could be the Phantom’s guards.”
Ava nodded, her jaw set in determination. “We need to avoid them. Let’s take the west entrance.”
They skirted around the perimeter, their movements silent and deliberate. As they approached the west side of the building, Ava spotted a narrow window just above ground level. “There,” she whispered, pointing. “We can get in through there.”
Liam hoisted her up, and she slipped through the window, landing softly on the other side. She turned back to help Liam in, and together they found themselves in a dimly lit corridor. The walls were lined with heavy steel doors, each one secured with an electronic lock.
“We need to find the control room,” Liam said, his eyes scanning the hallway. “It should have the controls for these locks.”
Ava’s fingers brushed against a cold metal panel, and she took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead. “This way,” she said, leading him down the corridor.
They moved quickly but cautiously, every sense on high alert. As they rounded a corner, they came face-to-face with a guard. Ava reacted instinctively, her training kicking in as she delivered a swift, silent blow that rendered him unconscious.
“Nice work,” Liam whispered, a hint of admiration in his voice.
Ava allowed herself a brief, grim smile. “Let’s keep moving.”
They reached the control room without further incident, and Liam quickly set to work on the security system. “I’ll need a few minutes to override the locks,” he said, his fingers flying over the keyboard.
Ava nodded, her eyes darting around the room. “I’ll keep watch.”
Minutes felt like hours as she stood guard, every sound amplifying her anxiety. Finally, the locks disengaged with a soft click, and Liam gave her a thumbs-up. “We’re in.”
They hurried back to the corridor, opening the steel doors one by one. Ava’s heart leapt when she found their ally, bound and gagged in a small, windowless room. “We’ve got you,” she whispered, freeing them from their restraints.
The ally, a young woman named Clara, looked up at Ava with wide, grateful eyes. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice hoarse from disuse. “You have no idea how close they were to breaking me.”
Ava helped her to her feet, her grip firm and reassuring. “We need to get you out of here,” she said, her voice filled with urgency.
They made their way back through the compound, moving as swiftly and silently as shadows. Just as they reached the opening in the fence, a blaring alarm shattered the silence.
“They know we’re here,” Liam said, his voice tight with tension. “We need to move!”
They sprinted through the opening, the sound of boots thundering behind them. Ava’s lungs burned as she pushed herself harder, her mind focused solely on getting Clara to safety. They reached their getaway vehicle just as the Phantom’s operatives burst through the fence.
Liam floored the accelerator, the tires screeching as they sped away. Bullets pinged off the metal, but they kept driving, the city lights blurring into a dizzying array of colors. Ava turned to Clara, who was breathing heavily, her eyes filled with fear.
“You’re safe now,” Ava said, her voice soothing. “But we need to know everything you can tell us about the Phantom’s plans.”
Clara nodded, her expression resolute. “There’s a hidden network,” she began, her voice trembling but determined. “The Phantom has operatives embedded deep within your organization. They’ve been feeding him information for months.”
Ava’s blood ran cold at the revelation. “Do you know who they are?” she asked, her mind racing.
Clara shook her head. “I only know that they exist. But there’s one who stands outâa high-ranking member, someone you trust implicitly.”
Ava exchanged a troubled glance with Liam. “This changes everything,” she said quietly. “We can’t trust anyone until we root out these operatives.”

As the car sped through the night, Ava’s mind churned with the implications of Clara’s revelation. The Phantom’s reach was deeper than she had ever imagined, and the threat was far from over. But one thing was certainâshe would do whatever it took to protect her family and her legacy, no matter the cost.
The vehicle skidded to a halt outside a safe house, and they hurried inside, securing the doors behind them. Liam set up a perimeter, ensuring they weren’t followed, while Ava sat with Clara, her mind working furiously.
“We need a plan,” Liam said, rejoining them. “A way to identify these operatives without tipping them off.”
Ava nodded, her gaze intense. “Clara, think carefully. Is there anythingâanything at allâthat could help us identify them?”
Clara closed her eyes, concentrating. “There’s a code,” she said slowly. “A phrase they use in communication. ‘The raven flies at midnight.’ If you hear anyone use that phrase, they’re one of the Phantom’s operatives.”
Ava’s jaw tightened. “That’s a start,” she said. “We’ll need to be vigilant, and we’ll need to move quickly.”
Liam placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We’ll get through this, Ava. Together.”
Ava looked into his eyes, drawing strength from his unwavering support. “Yes,” she said softly. “Together.”
As they sat in the dimly lit safe house, the weight of the revelation settling over them, Ava knew that their fight was far from over. The Phantom had underestimated her resolve, and she would use every ounce of her courage and resourcefulness to bring him down.
The night stretched on, filled with hurried whispers and the soft rustle of papers as they planned their next move. And as dawn approached, a sense of grim determination settled over Ava. She would face the challenges ahead with unwavering resolve, ready to protect those she loved and dismantle the Phantom’s network from within.
In the quiet moments before the sun rose, Ava allowed herself a brief moment of reflection. The path ahead was fraught with danger, but she had Liam by her side, and together, they were unstoppable.
“We’ll find them,” Ava said, her voice steady. “And we’ll stop the Phantom once and for all.”
Liam squeezed her hand, his expression fierce. “Whatever it takes.”
