THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 90
Chapter 90: Confronting the Past
The flickering light of the lantern cast eerie shadows on the walls, adding to the tension that hung thick in the air. Ava paced back and forth, her thoughts a whirlwind of confusion and anger. She clenched her fists, trying to steady her breath, but her heart pounded loudly in her chest.
The figure from her past stood across the room, his face partially obscured by the dim light. His presence alone stirred up a maelstrom of emotions within her. It had been years since she last saw him, and now, here he was, holding the key to the puzzle that had haunted her for so long.
“You have no idea what you’ve done,” Ava spat, her voice trembling with suppressed rage.
He took a step forward, his expression pained. “Ava, I never wanted to hurt you. You have to believe me.”
“Believe you?” Ava’s voice rose, filled with incredulity. “You left me to fend for myself! You disappeared without a trace, and now you suddenly reappear with answers?”
“I had no choice,” he replied, his voice heavy with regret. “If I hadn’t left, we would both be dead.”
Ava shook her head, trying to process his words. “Why now? Why come back now after all these years?”
He sighed, his shoulders sagging under the weight of his burden. “Because the Phantom is planning something catastrophic, something that could destroy everything we’ve worked for. And I… I’ve been working against him, from the inside.”
Ava froze, her eyes widening in shock. “What do you mean?”
“I’ve been infiltrating the Phantom’s network, gathering information, trying to sabotage his plans,” he explained. “It hasn’t been easy, and I couldn’t risk contacting you sooner.”
Ava’s mind raced, the pieces of the puzzle starting to fit together. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “Why should I trust you now? How do I know you’re not still working for him?”
“Because I have proof,” he said, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a folder. “This contains everything I’ve gathered â his plans, his contacts, everything.”
Ava took the folder, her hands shaking as she opened it. The documents inside were detailed, outlining a plan that sent chills down her spine. She looked up at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and determination.
“We have to stop him,” she said firmly.
He nodded, relief washing over his face. “That’s why I came back. I need your help, Ava. You’re the only one who can put an end to this.”
Ava swallowed hard, her emotions swirling inside her. She wanted to trust him, but the pain of the past still lingered. She closed the folder and met his gaze, her expression resolute.
“Fine,” she said. “But this doesn’t mean I forgive you. We’re doing this for the mission, nothing more.”
He nodded, understanding the gravity of her words. “Thank you, Ava. I won’t let you down again.”
Just as Ava was about to respond, a loud crash echoed through the cabin. They both turned, their senses heightened. The door burst open, and a group of armed operatives stormed in, their weapons trained on the figure from Ava’s past.
“Get down!” one of them shouted.
Ava instinctively dove for cover, her heart racing. The figure didn’t move, standing tall despite the guns pointed at him. He raised his hands slowly, his eyes never leaving Ava’s.
“Ava, listen to me,” he said calmly. “You have to get out of here. The Phantom knows we’re here. He sent them to stop us.”
Ava’s mind raced as she weighed her options. She couldn’t leave him to face this alone, not after everything. She took a deep breath and stood up, her hands raised in surrender.
“Wait,” she called out, stepping between the operatives and the figure. “He’s with me.”
The lead operative hesitated, glancing between Ava and the figure. “Are you sure, Miss Taylor? This man is dangerous.”
“I’m sure,” Ava replied firmly. “He’s on our side.”
The operative nodded, lowering his weapon. “Alright. But we need to move, now. The Phantom’s men are on their way.”
Ava nodded, turning to the figure. “Come on, we need to go.”
He nodded, following her lead as they made their way out of the cabin. The night air was cold and biting, but Ava felt a renewed sense of purpose. They had to stop the Phantom, no matter what.
As they navigated through the forest, Ava couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. She glanced over her shoulder, her eyes scanning the darkness. Suddenly, a shot rang out, and the figure from her past cried out in pain.

“Ava, run!” he shouted, clutching his side.
“No!” Ava cried, rushing to his side. She could see the blood seeping through his fingers, the wound deep. “I’m not leaving you.”
“You have to,” he insisted, his voice weak. “You need to stop the Phantom. Go!”
Tears streamed down Ava’s face as she looked at him, her heart breaking. She wanted to stay, to help him, but she knew he was right. She had to stop the Phantom, for both their sakes.
“I’ll come back for you,” she promised, her voice choked with emotion. “I won’t let you die here.”
He nodded, his eyes filled with gratitude. “Go, Ava. Save us all.”
With a final, lingering look, Ava turned and ran, her heart heavy with the weight of her decision. She could hear the operatives behind her, their voices urging her on. She had to keep moving, to stay focused on the mission.
As she ran, Ava couldn’t help but think about everything she had learned. The figure from her past had been working against the Phantom all along, risking his life to gather the information they needed. She had to honor his sacrifice, to finish what he had started.
The forest seemed endless, the shadows closing in around her. Ava’s legs burned with exhaustion, but she pushed herself harder, fueled by a fierce determination. She couldn’t let the Phantom win, not after everything.
Finally, she burst through the trees, the safe house just ahead. She stumbled inside, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The team was already there, their faces filled with concern.
“Ava, are you alright?” one of them asked, rushing to her side.
“I’m fine,” she replied, trying to steady her breath. “But we need to act fast. The Phantom knows we’re onto him.”
The team nodded, their expressions grim. They gathered around the table, the documents from the folder spread out before them. Ava’s mind raced as she pieced together the final parts of the puzzle.
“We need to hit him where it hurts,” she said, her voice steady. “We need to take down his operations, one by one.”
The team nodded, their determination mirroring her own. They had come too far to back down now. Together, they would stop the Phantom, no matter the cost.
As they prepared for the next phase of their mission, Ava couldn’t help but think about the figure from her past. She had to believe that he was still alive, that he would pull through. She owed it to him to finish this, to make sure that his sacrifice wasn’t in vain.
The night was far from over, and the battle ahead would be fierce. But Ava was ready. She would confront the past, face her fears, and put an end to the Phantom’s reign of terror once and for all. And in the process, she would find the strength to forgive, to move forward, and to finally find peace.
Just as they were about to finalize their plan, the sound of gunfire echoed outside the safe house. Ava’s heart skipped a beat as she realized the Phantom’s operatives had found them. The team grabbed their weapons, ready to defend themselves.
Ava’s eyes widened in horror as the door burst open, and the figure from her past stumbled in, bleeding and barely conscious. “They’re here,” he gasped, collapsing to the floor.
Ava rushed to his side, her heart pounding. “Hold on,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “We’re going to get you out of here.”
The team’s leader shouted, “Everyone, prepare for an attack! This is it!”
Ava’s mind raced, knowing that the next few moments would determine everything. The battle was about to begin, and she had to stay strong, for the mission, for her team, and for the man who had risked everything to save them.
The door creaked open, and the shadows of their enemies loomed large. Ava’s grip tightened on her weapon, ready to face whatever came next. The fight for their lives, and for the future, had begun.
