THE HEIRESS VOW - Chapter 98
Chapter 98: The Unseen Ally
Darkness enveloped the narrow tunnel as the team advanced cautiously, the only light emanating from their flickering lanterns. The air was thick with tension, each step echoing ominously against the damp stone walls. The guide, a shadowy figure known only as “Raven,” moved ahead with practiced ease, his movements silent and assured.
“Are you sure this is the right way?” Ava’s voice, though low, carried a hint of skepticism.
Raven paused, turning to face her, his eyes gleaming in the dim light. “Trust me, it’s the only way out,” he replied, his tone unwavering. “But we must hurry. They will soon realize we’re missing.”
Liam placed a reassuring hand on Ava’s shoulder. “We don’t have much of a choice, Ava. We have to trust him.”
Ava nodded reluctantly, the weight of their situation pressing down on her. They had no other options, but the gnawing doubt in her heart refused to be silenced.
As they pressed on, the tunnel seemed to narrow, the walls closing in around them. Every sound, every drip of water from the ceiling, amplified the feeling of claustrophobia. Ava’s mind raced with thoughts of betrayal and traps, but she forced herself to focus on their mission.
Suddenly, Raven stopped abruptly, signaling for silence. He pressed his ear against the wall, listening intently. Ava and Liam exchanged wary glances, their unease growing with each passing second.
“They’re close,” Raven whispered, his voice barely audible. “We need to take the side passage up ahead. It will lead us to a hidden exit.”
Ava’s eyes narrowed. “And how do we know you’re not leading us into a trap?”
Raven met her gaze steadily. “You don’t. But staying here will certainly get you captured.”
Before Ava could respond, a distant clatter echoed through the tunnel, the unmistakable sound of boots on stone. The adversary’s forces were closing in.
“Move!” Raven hissed, urgency in his voice. He took off down the side passage, the team following close behind.
The new path was even narrower, forcing them to move single file. The oppressive darkness seemed to close in, every step a struggle against the encroaching fear. Ava’s breath came in shallow gasps, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the tension in the air, a palpable force threatening to consume them.
After what felt like an eternity, they emerged into a small chamber, dimly lit by a single, ancient torch. In the center of the room stood a heavy wooden door, reinforced with iron bands. Raven approached it, his movements deliberate and precise.
“This is the exit,” he announced, turning to face them. “But it’s guarded. We need to be careful.”
Ava’s eyes widened. “How do you know all this? Who are you, really?”
Raven hesitated, his expression unreadable. “There’s no time for explanations. Just trust that I want to get out of here as much as you do.”
Liam stepped forward, his gaze hardening. “If this is a trap, you’ll be the first to go down.”
Raven nodded solemnly. “Understood.”
With a swift, practiced motion, he unlatched the door, easing it open just enough to peer through the crack. The faint sound of voices drifted in, confirming the presence of guards.
“We’ll have to move fast,” Raven whispered. “I’ll take out the first guard. You two follow and cover me.”
Ava and Liam exchanged a tense glance, then nodded in unison. The plan was risky, but they had no other choice.
Raven slipped through the door, his movements fluid and silent. A muffled thud followed, signaling the first guard’s downfall. Ava and Liam moved swiftly, slipping into the corridor beyond.
The scene that greeted them was a narrow passageway, flanked by two more guards. Raven was already engaged with one, his swift strikes leaving the guard little room to react. Ava and Liam sprang into action, taking on the second guard with a combination of precision and brute force.
The struggle was brief but intense, the confined space amplifying every sound and movement. Within moments, the guards lay unconscious on the floor, the passageway momentarily clear.
“Let’s go,” Raven urged, his voice tight with urgency. “We don’t have much time.”
They moved quickly, the narrow corridor winding and twisting, each turn fraught with potential danger. Ava’s mind raced, the weight of their situation pressing down on her. Trusting Raven was a gamble, one that could cost them everything.
As they rounded the next corner, a sudden shout rang out, followed by the sound of approaching footsteps. Raven cursed under his breath. “They’re onto us. We need to find another way.”
Ava’s heart sank. “Another way? You said this was the only exit!”
Raven’s jaw clenched. “There is one more, but it’s risky. It leads directly into the enemy’s territory. But it might be our only chance.”

Liam stepped forward, his eyes blazing with determination. “Then we take it. We can’t afford to be caught here.”
Raven nodded, his expression grim. “Follow me.”
They sprinted through the twisting corridors, the sounds of pursuit growing louder with each step. Ava’s lungs burned, her legs aching with the effort, but she pushed on, driven by sheer willpower.
At last, they reached a heavy iron gate, partially hidden behind a crumbling stone wall. Raven moved swiftly, prying it open with a rusty lever.
“This way,” he urged, slipping through the narrow opening. Ava and Liam followed, the gate clanging shut behind them.
The passage beyond was even darker, the air thick with the scent of damp earth. Ava’s mind whirled with a thousand questions, but there was no time for answers. They moved quickly, the sounds of their pursuers fading into the distance.
Finally, they emerged into a large, dimly lit cavern. In the center stood a massive stone structure, covered in ancient runes and carvings.
“This is it,” Raven said, his voice echoing through the cavern. “The final exit.”
Ava stared at him, her eyes narrowing. “And how do we know this isn’t another trap?”
Raven met her gaze, his expression unreadable. “You don’t. But this is our only chance.”
Before Ava could respond, a sudden commotion erupted from the tunnel behind them. The adversary’s forces had caught up, their shouts echoing through the cavern.
“We have to move, now!” Raven shouted, his voice filled with urgency. He darted towards the stone structure, Ava and Liam following close behind.
As they approached, Raven began to chant in a low, rhythmic voice, the ancient runes glowing faintly in response. The ground trembled, a hidden mechanism slowly revealing a narrow passage leading upwards.
“This is it,” Raven said, his voice strained with effort. “The way out.”
Ava and Liam exchanged a tense glance, then nodded. Together, they climbed the narrow passage, the sounds of pursuit growing ever closer.
At last, they emerged into the cool night air, the stars twinkling overhead. But their relief was short-lived as the sound of boots on stone grew louder behind them.
“Run!” Raven shouted, his voice filled with desperation. “We can’t stop now!”
They sprinted across the open ground, the enemy’s forces hot on their heels. Ava’s heart pounded in her chest, her mind racing with fear and adrenaline.
Suddenly, a shot rang out, and Raven stumbled, clutching his side. He fell to the ground, his face contorted in pain.
“No!” Ava screamed, rushing to his side. “We can’t leave you here!”
Raven’s eyes were filled with pain, but also determination. “Go,” he gasped. “I’ll hold them off. You have to get out of here.”
Ava hesitated, her heart torn. But Liam grabbed her arm, pulling her away. “We have to go, Ava. Now!”
