[28 – The Fine Line between Truth and Lies]
While Marcus and William were having a conversation in the former’s study, Elijah paced in the hallway outside, worried about what must be going on inside his father’s study.
He kept on anxiously glancing at the closed door, fearing that his father and Uncle William might get into an argument because of the last night’s events. He still could not believe that Ethan would do betray Caroline like that.
Both of them seemed to be so much in love, but Ethan ruined everything. Elijah was also worried about Caroline and he wondered if something had happened to the poor girl which led to William march inside their house in so much anger.
His mother was equally worried and for the very same reasons. Her face etched with concern as she hovered near the door, clearly anxious about what was being discussed inside.
Elijah’s attention was diverted when he felt his cell phone vibrate inside the pocket of his trousers. Taking out his cell phone, Elijah’s face instantly turned serious when he noticed the called ID being displayed on the screen.
He glanced around to see that his mother was still preoccupied, taking advantage of her distraction, Elijah silently slipped away to his room. Once there, he locked the door close before answering the call.
“Yes?” Elijah’s voice was a low whisper. His actions and his hushed tone made it look like Elijah was involved in some kind of conspiracy or scheme.
The voice on the other end spoke urgently causing Elijah’s expression darkened slightly. Lines of worry were etched on his forehead as she listened to the other person speak, . “Don’t worry, I’ll be there.” he replied in a firm yet soft voice, “I’ll message you once I am there.”
“Yeah. Okay, bye.” he said and ended the call.
Elijah placed his cell phone aside and slid open the door to his walk-in closet. He grabbed a duffle bag, opened a secret compartment in his closet, and then began roughly stuffing everything into that bag.
Once done, Elijah grabbed his laptop and car keys before stepping out of his room. He walked towards his mother who was still standing outside the door to his father’s study, “Mom, can I talk to you for a moment?”
“Huh?” Katherine tilted her head sideways to look at her son who looked quite anxious, “What happened, son?” she asked while placing her hand on his arm.
“Something urgent came up.” replied Elijah, “I need to attend to it and for that I need to leave now.”
Katherine frowned seeing the duffle bag in his hand, “Is everything alright?” she asked.
Smiling, Elijah grabbed his mother’s hand in his and said, “Everything is fine, Mom. It’s just work. I’ll be back as soon as I can.” he reassured her with a tight smile.
“Okay, fine.” smiled Katherine, “Take care of yourself, hhmm.”
Elijah smiled and kissed his mother on the cheek before heading out.

After driving for a while, Elijah stopped his car and parked it at a discreet spot. Grabbing his bag from the trunk of his car, Elijah walked to a nearby public washroom. Inside, he quickly changed his clothes, wore a wig and even used a fake moustache and beard to complete his disguise.
Pulling a cap low over his face, and wearing tinted glasses, Elijah glanced at his reflection in the mirror to make sure that no one would recognize him.
He exited the washroom and began looking for a cab. Taking one, he told the driver to take him to, “1146 Birchwood Lane.”
The driver nodded his head and drove off.
When they reached the address, Elijah paid the driver in cash, ensuring that there would be no digital trace of his trip. It would have been suspicious if Elijah had acted nervous or even a little anxious just as he had been when he had received that mysterious call.
But even in disguise, Elijah acted with such ease that it didn’t raise anybody’s suspicions.
Elijah covered the remaining distance to his destination on foot, his eyes scanning the surroundings from time to time while acting as if he was admiring the scenic surroundings.
Finally, he arrived at a small, nondescript house in a gated community. On seeing him, the security guard greeted him with a polite smile which Elijah responded in kind.
“How’s everything Ace?” Elijah asked cheerfully for he had known the guard since he bought a house in this community years ago.
“Everything is fine sir.” replied the security guard letting Elijah pass through the massive gates.
When Elijah arrived at the door, he rang the doorbell first, then knocked three times on the door, and sent a quick message to the number he had received a call from earlier.
The door opened, revealing a woman with wary eyes who quickly ushered him inside before locking the door behind them. The woman had long auburn hair that she had pulled up in a messy bun, her face was ashen with worry and it looked like she had been crying for a while.

“He’s been so stubborn, I don’t know how to deal with him.” the woman cried and Elijah quickly patted her shoulder in a comforting manner, “It’s okay. I’ll go see him.”
The woman nodded as Elijah opened the door and walked inside a room.

On the wall of the secret room in Seraphina’s mansion, the photograph of the same woman could be seen alongside an article that read;

Back at the woman, Emma Davis’s house, Elijah removed his disguise and smiled warmly at the small boy who was watching cartoons on his mother’s tablet.
“Hey, champ,” he greeted the child with a wide grin on his face as he walked over and grabbed the boy in a hug causing his face to lit up with joy.
“Uncle Eli!” the boy, Samuel, exclaimed in delight as he wrapped his tiny arms around Elijah’s neck tightly, “You came!”
“How could I not when my sweet little nephew wanted to see me?” Elijah replied back in childish voice and blew raspberries making the young boy laugh heartily.
The woman, Emma, looked on with gratitude, her eyes filled up with tears again seeing her son happy, “Thank you for coming, Elijah. Samuel has been asking for you non-stop.”
“This child is burning with fever but he still wouldn’t take his medicine because he wanted his Uncle Eli to be there.” Emma sniffled.
“Sammy! Look, you made your Mumma cry.” Elijah looked at Samuel with slightly stern gaze in an effort to make the young child realize that his behavior was wrong.
“I am sorry, Mumma.” Samuel pouted and loosened his hold on Elijah only to extend his arms towards his mother asking her to pick him up.
Emma let out a sob of relief and hugged her son tightly. She had been going crazy because of his high fever and constant demand for Elijah.
“It’s okay, baby! Mumma’s okay. Don’t worry!” Emma assured her son and rubbed his back gently, “Now that your Uncle Eli has come, will you eat your food and take your medicine like a good boy that I know you are?”
Samuel nodded his head in positive and Emma handed him back to Elijah as she went to the kitchen to heat up the good and bring the medication as well.
Elijah made Samuel sit on the bed and began feeding him tiny morsels of food. Afterwards, he also helped the boy take his medication and continued to talk to him till Samuel began to doze off.
Gently laying him down, Elijah covered Samuel with a blanket and switched off the lights before stepping out of the room. As he sat on the dining table, Emma served him food and took a seat opposite to him.
“Thank you so much, Elijah! I don’t have the words to describe how thankful I am.” said Emma.
Elijah smiled and replied, “It’s alright, Emma. You don’t have to thank me for this. I am Sammy’s godfather after all, so all this is my responsibility.” he chuckled but Emma started crying again.
“Hey! It’s alright.” Elijah tried to reassure her but Emma said, “It’s not just about today. I am thankful to you for everything that you have done for me and my son even after what I did to you.”
Regret and gratitude filled Emma’s eyes, “I never thought you would help us after everything that happened. I accused for such a heinous crime but you still saved me back then, and even now you are keeping both of Sammy and I safe. You are still helping us even though I deserve nothing of this.”
Elijah shook his head, and placed his hand on top of Emma’s, “You were a victim too, Emma. What you did back then was out of fear and manipulation. I am not going to hold that against you.”
“It’s not your fault alone. If that night hadn’t happened then things would have been different for all of us.” exclaimed Elijah recalling that fateful night that changed everything.
