[49 – Quicksand of a Mess – I]
Elijah stayed at Seraphina’s place until late that evening. He stayed there because he wanted to spend some quality time with his new girlfriend and make sure that she does not hurt herself again. It wasn’t until he got a call from Marcus asking him about his whereabouts that Elijah finally decided to leave.
But he was not ready to do so. Not yet.
“Elijah?” Seraphina drawled out his name in a sweet voice to which Elijah just hummed in response, his arms wrapped around Seraphina, his chin resting atop her shoulder as he hugged her from behind.
“Are you not going back home tonight?” she was sitting between his legs, working on a few sketches that she had to send to the client for the final approval.
Pouting, Elijah asked, “Do you want me to leave?”
Seraphina mentally rolled her eyes at how childish Elijah was behaving especially after she accepted his proposal. She wondered if he acted the same with every other girl that ever had the misfortune of him being in their lives. She hated it but she had to do this for the sake of her purpose, her mission in life.
She placed her hand over his and said, “It isn’t about what I want, it is about what you told your father that you were going to do.” patting his hand, she lightly hit her head with his and added, “You should go back home Elijah, what if your father has something important to discuss with you?”
Elijah groaned and rested his forehead against her shoulder while Seraphina chuckled and raised her hand up to caress his hair, “If you would not go now, then how would we meet tomorrow?”
Propping his chin back on her shoulder, Elijah glared at her without any heat in his eyes, “That does not even make any sense! We will still get to see each other tomorrow way earlier if I stay here and don’t go back.”
“Tch!” Seraphina turned her head sideways, her nose scrunched up but there was a sweet smile curved upon her lips as she responded, “Don’t try to be smart with me, okay Mr.” she pecked his nose and added, “Go home, Elijah. I promise we will meet again tomorrow.”
“Promise?” he asked for confirmation.
Seraphina kissed him on the forehead this time, her lips lingering there for a moment before she said, “I promise.”

Back at the safe house, Jaxon went to the spacious room where Vivi was being kept. There was an array of machines connected to Vivi’s tiny, petite body through tubes and wires. The continuous and rhythmic beeps of the heart monitor assured him that even if Vivi’s brain had stopped responding, her heart and soul were still there with him.
Jaxon grabbed a stool and went to sit beside her bed. Gently taking her hand in his, Jaxon kissed the back of her hand before pressing it against his cheek, “I know that by keeping you here I am only hurting you.”
Tears started falling down his cheeks, unabashed, “Just give me some time, Vivi. I promise I will set you free once every culprit of yours get the punishment that they deserve.”
“You have always trusted me, believe in me, so please do it one last time. I promise this time you would not regret it.” he kissed the back of her hand once again before gently placing it back on the bed.
He stood up and kissed her on the forehead once before leaving the room.

Madison arrived to meet Seraphina once Elijah left. She did not know that Seraphina had hurt herself and that she had accepted Elijah’s proposal to be his girlfriend. Madison had come to visit her and hand her some important documents to add to the file that they have been preparing against Marcus, William, and Daniel.
These documents and reports ranged from minor offenses to extreme illegal activities that the three men were involved in. This file was more of a record case sheet that had all the proofs which would aid the police and lawyers to shut down all of Marcus, William, and Daniel’s businesses.
When Madison arrived, Seraphina was in the kitchen making dinner for the two of them. Placing her office bag on the couch, Madison joined Seraphina in the kitchen, “Hey!”
“Hi!” Seraphina greeted back and handed Madison a glass of water, “How was your day?” she asked.
“Good. I found a few more documents that you can -” she stopped mid way when she noticed the bandage on Seraphina’s foot. Warning bells started ringing in Madison’s mind, “What happened?” she asked, her voice laced with panic as she pointed at Seraphina’s bandaged foot.
“Oh, this?” Seraphina muttered, “Just a minor scratch, nothing else.”
“You call this a minor scratch? Sera, tell me the truth -” sighing, Seraphina raised her hand gesturing Madison to stop and told her about everything that happened. About how she got injured, why she hurt herself, and how Elijah proposed to her and the truth of her acceptance as well.
After listening to the whole story, Madison had only one question that she wanted to ask, “Are you sure about this, is there no other way?”
Seraphina very well understood Madison’s concerns regarding her plan of trapping Elijah in her love and use him to take revenge. There were risks involved for sure but she wanted to destroy Marcus and his family completely.
Unlike William and Daniel, Marcus loved his children and his wife, no matter how twisted it was, it was still love. She wanted to hurt him where it would pain the most. His family. And what other better way was there than sowing discord among his family members and have them fight against each other.
“I am a 100 per cent sure about this Maddy. I am fully aware of what I am doing and what I have planned to do. Just trust me on this.” Seraphina smiled hoping to ease some of Madison’s worries about her.

The next morning, Marcus was at the dining table having eating breakfast with his wife. Chloe had left early for office while Ethan was still locked up in his room. As for Elijah, it was surprising for both Marcus and Katherine that Elijah did not join them for breakfast.
Marcus had just sliced a piece of his pancake when he received a call from his secretary, “Hello.” he said answering the call.
“Sir, there has been a problem.” his secretary, Christina responded making him frown, “What problem?”
“Sir, a new scandal has surfaced regarding your son -” Marcus did not let her complete her sentence and instantly started cursing.
He ended the call and walked towards Ethan’s room, assuming that Ethan was behind this new mess as well. Unlocking the door, Marcus entered his son’s room, his assumption transforming into conformation when he could not find Ethan in his room.
“Ethan!” Marcus growled in anger and was about to leave but stopped when he heard Ethan say, “Dad? What are you doing here?”
Marcus turned around and found Ethan standing in front of the washroom door. He looked like he had just showered. “What did you do now?” questioned Marcus, his tone reflecting the anger that was simmering just beneath the surface.
“Nothing, Dad! I swear I didn’t do a thing to upset you anymore.” Ethan tried to defend himself. He truly had not done a thing because he was afraid to evoke Marcus’s anger. “Also, I have been locked up here and you have got all of my electronic devices so there is nothing that I could do other than watch television and play video games.”
“Then what -” he stopped when his cell phone started ringing again. It was his secretary’s call, “What? What is this scandal that were just telling me about? Tell me, what did Ethan do now?” he asked while glaring at Ethan who just stood there silently.
“Sir, it isn’t about Mr. Ethan.” Christina informed him, “This time, it’s about Mr. Elijah. The media is talking about Mr. Elijah’s relationship with the renowned fashion designer, Miss Seraphina Vale. I have emailed you the articles and photographs that have been made public.”
Marcus could not believe his ears. He would have expected a situation like this from Ethan and Chloe but Elijah, he never thought that Elijah would one day drag him into such a scandal.
Taking a deep breath, Marcus sat down and opened the email that Christina had sent while still bein on call with her. It was at the top of his inbox and was marked as urgent. Clicking on it, Marcus checked all the links and photographs that Christina had shared with him, each article’s headline more sensation than the last.
“Heir Apparent Elijah Grayson’s Secret Romance with Fashion Icon Seraphina Vale Revealed!”
“Behind the Glamour: Elijah and Seraphina’s Hidden Affair!”
The photographs showed Elijah and Seraphina in various settings, there were some photographs that showed Elijah carrying Seraphina in his arms, some were of him holding onto her while she was being treated at the hospital, of Seraphina snuggling up against Elijah and so much more.
Though Marcus absolutely hated the idea of his and his family’s name being brought up in the media but he was felt a little proud as well on seeing his son with someone so accomplished and admired.
Seraphina Vale was indeed a good candidate to be Elijah’s wife and his eldest daughter-in-law. She was the owner and chief designer of the world renowned fashion designing company. If Elijah is actually interested in Seraphina then it’s a good thing.
Christina’s voice broke through his thoughts, “Sir, the board is already asking questions. They want to know how this will impact the company’s image.”
Marcus rubbed his temples. He wasn’t upset at all about Elijah’s choice but the timing was not right. They had just gotten out of the mess that Ethan had created and the board members were already annoyed, and now things may get worse if not handled properly.
But first, he needed to talk to Elijah about this.
