[51 – The Calm before the Storm]
When Seraphina arrived at her company, the reporters that had been waiting for her immediately surrounded her car making it difficult for them to go inside. The security guards had to forcefully push them away so as to let Seraphina’s car go inside the company premises.
Ignoring the whispering hushed voices, Seraphina went straight to her cabin followed by Gina. Knowing her boss well, Gina had already pushed back all of Seraphina’s appointments because she knew of Seraphina’s plans.
All of them.
Leaning back on the chair, Seraphina started filing her nails while she waited for Elijah’s call which she had been expecting. She did not have to wait for too long as only after 15 minutes of her arriving at the office, she received his call.
“Hello.” she answered the call, her voice low and soft.
“Sera -” Elijah breathed. He was afraid that Seraphina might be upset with him because of the latest news articles about them. That’s why his first concern was her, “Are you okay?” he asked.
Seraphina smiled, “Why would I not be?” she questioned, “If you think that those news articles and photographs can have any negative affect on me then you are wrong.”
Elijah exhaled the breath that he did not realize he had been holding while Seraphina continued, “I am not the one to be easily swayed or be made upset by such things, Elijah, so just relax. Okay?”
Relief spread through his nerves, “I was worried.”
“I can tell.” she smiled, “And Elijah, if you want to deny these -” Elijah did not let her complete her sentence. Exactly as she had expected him to do.
“There is nothing to deny about, Sera.” Elijah was quick to say, “You are not my dirty secret, alright. I like you, you are my girlfriend, and I have no problem in telling the entire world about what you mean to me.”
Tapping her fingernails against her desk, Seraphina responded, “Well,” she paused for a few seconds, “Thank you.” Elijah could hear the hints of happiness in her voice and was sure that she must be smiling at the moment.
And indeed, Seraphina was smiling but the reason behind her smile was different from what Elijah had assumed to be.
“There is nothing for you to be thankful about.” said Elijah, his tone soft and steady, “Just remember this Sera, you and I, both of us being together is what makes this a relationship. And in this relationship, we both are equals. You deserve all the respect, recognition, and love. So don’t ever think that I am going to hide our relationship or keep you a secret or anything else.”
“Understood?” he asked.
“Very well.” responded Seraphina and did the thumbs up gesture to Gina.
“Oh, by the way. I wanted to ask you about something.” Elijah began, “My parents want to meet you.”
Seraphina opened her mouth to say something but was interrupted by Elijah’s rant, “I know, I know that this is too early for you to be meeting my parents. I mean, it has not even been 24 hours since we actually became a couple and now I am telling you that parents want to see you. It must be daunting for you, I can understand and if you do not want to meet them yet, that is understandable as well.”
“Elijah -” he did not let Seraphina speak and continued, “You don’t have to apologize for this, either. I mean, it’s totally fine if you are not ready yet. But they just want to meet you. You know, like a casual meet up. But it is absolutely up to you. If you want to meet them then it’s okay, and if you don’t -”
“ELIJAH GRAYSON! Will you keep quiet for a moment?” Seraphina yelled into the cell phone. She did not know that Elijah could speak so much in such a short amount of time.
After this, Elijah became silent. He did not speak and Seraphina decided to wait for 30 seconds to see if he was going to start a rant again.
When he did not, Seraphina complimented him for listening to her, “Good boy!” her tone tinkling with laughter as she continued, “Now, listen, and listen quietly.”
“I would love to meet your parents.” she said, “Just as you said, Mr. Boyfriend, this is our relationship and there is nothing wrong about it, there is nothing for either of us to hide about it.”
Seraphina leaned forward on her desk and began playing with the paperweight, “I am not going to run away at the idea of meeting your parents, Elijah.”
“They are your parents and not some kind of monsters who would eat me alive, right?” her tone sounded as if she was joking, her choice of words making Elijah laugh, “I would love to meet them, just tell me where and when.”
Elijah’s heart fluttered happily on hearing her response, “I am glad.” he replied before adding, “Today wouldn’t be possible, how about tomorrow?”
Seraphina shook her head in negative, tomorrow was not the right day, “I would not be able to make it for tomorrow, Elijah. In fact, this whole week is extremely busy for us.”
“Hhmm, then how about this -” he began, “Like every year, my family is going to organize a huge New Year’s party on 31st of December. I think that would be a perfect setting for you to meet my parents. What do you think? You aren’t busy on 31st as well, right?” he asked.
“Nah!” chuckled Seraphina, “Let’s go with what you just suggested. The New Year’s party sounds good.”
“Okay!” he smiled, “I will be waiting for you at your place with the invitation card in my hand. How does that sound?”

“Elijah -” Seraphina chuckled, “What? You promised me yesterday that we would meet again today. I am coming to meet you by myself, so what is the reason behind this objection?” Elijah was being childish, he knew that but he had realized it very quickly and within the first few hours of them being in a relationship that he enjoyed being so childish around her and be pampered by her.
All his life he had been the sweet, kind, and mature eldest son of the Grayson family. Perhaps, it was his introvert nature that he never truly expressed his real feelings in front of anybody and everyone simply assumed that he was strong and mature.
But with her, he felt that he was free to let down his guard and reveal to the softer, more vulnerable side of himself that only his closed ones knew about. Elijah had this feeling that Seraphina would never judge him for it. In fact, she seemed to relish the opportunity to pamper him. With her, he felt like he could be himself, wholly and completely.
“Okay, fine!” exclaimed Seraphina, “See you in the evening. Bye!” she added followed by a giggle.
“Bye!” responded Elijah before ending the call.
