[53 – The Heartbreaking Revelation]
Mia was panicking.
She had woken up that morning, happy and excited to spend the whole day with Elijah, her best friend for whom she had deep, romantic feelings. She woke up earlier than usual that day and spent the next three hours getting ready for her day long date with Elijah while imagining about the things that she wanted to do with Elijah.
She had a whole list of things that she wanted to do but all her plans were shattered the moment she received that message from her best friend Anya, the only person other than her Dad who knew about her feelings for Elijah.
M! Did you see this? Is this true?

Anya had sent a hyperlink along with the message whose URL address was enough to make Mia frown, a sense of dread settling in her heart. With slightly shaky hands, Mia clicked on the link and waited anxiously for the webpage to load.
Her worst fears were confirmed to be true as she scrolled through the content of the webpage. There were a number of photos that feature Elijah carrying a woman in his arms, of him looking at her with such raw emotions that she had never seen Elijah express before.
She recognized the clothes that Elijah was wearing after all she had picked those out for him for the press conference. So this was the urgent work that Elijah had told her about.
Mia sniffled, tears blurring her gaze as she started reading the article. Pain slashed across her heart as if someone had stabbed her with a dagger, piercing through all of her hopes and dreams that she had centered around Elijah.
The pain in her heart became unbearable but Mia wanted to confirm the news before doing anything. So she quickly wiped away her tears and corrected her makeup before rushing out of her house. She drove herself to the Grayson mansion hoping to find Elijah there so that she could get the answers from him that she was looking for.
Mia’s heart raced as she walked inside the Grayson mansion but she tried her best to not let her inner turmoil reflect on her face. She greeted everybody with a polite smile before going towards Elijah’s room.
She hesitated for a moment and tried her best to calm her racing heart before she raised her hand to knock at the door. Se waited for him to open the door but when after a few seconds he did not, so Mia knocked at the door again. This time harder than before.
On getting no response again, Mia was about to knock at the door again but stopped mid way when finally, Elijah opened the door for her.
“Oh, hey, Mia! What are you doing here?” that was the first thing that he said on seeing her.
She opened her mouth to reply but it seemed like Elijah did not want to listen to her answer as he turned around and went to sit on his bed. Mia noticed that his complete focus was on his cell phone. He was perhaps texting someone.
“Elijah?’ Mia called out his name loudly.
“Huh?” he finally looked up from his phone’s screen, “What happened?”
“That is what I wanted to ask.” Mia chuckled mirthlessly, “What happened to you? Did you forget about your promise?” she questioned while sitting beside him on the bed.
“What -” she saw the realization dawn upon him, “Oh, I am sorry I completely forgot about that.” he apologized, “It’s just -”
Elijah was once again distracted by his cell phone that pinged with the sound of notification alert. His eyes lit up, his entire being seemed to have brightened up as he read the message that he had just received.
Mia was left utterly astonished when she saw Elijah’s lips curved upwards in a rare smile that Mia had never seen before. The emotions that were being reflected on his face were so raw, unadulterated, that he was literally radiating with happiness and joy.
She had an inkling that she was in for a heartbreak. Elijah’s reactions and actions were enough for her to realize that she had lost even before she could try.
Taking a deep breath, Mia tried to gather all the courage that she could find inside her and asked, “Elijah? Is it true?”
“Huh?” Elijah shifted his gaze from his phone’s screen to her, “What did you ask?”
Mia repeated her question, “I was asking if the news about you and Seraphina, is that true?”
Only her name was enough for Elijah to turn into a bright tomato. His gaze softened as he met her eyes, “Yes,” he admitted genuinely, his voice tinged with both excitement and giddiness, “It’s true.”
Mia felt like someone had injected her with the world’s deadliest, slow poison. She did her best to maintain her composure but the pain was becoming unbearable by every passing second, killing her slowly.
Oblivious to his best friend’s emotions, Elijah began sharing with her the details of his relationship with Seraphina. Even his voice sounded different when he talked about her.
“You must be surprised right!” Elijah placed his cell phone aside and grabbed her hands in his, “I know! I am not able to believe this as well. I mean, it’s just so movie like, so dramatic yet so good!”
“You know, I met Seraphina 4 years ago but at that time we did not get to talk much. We only spent about 40 to 55 minutes together before going our separate ways. But perhaps, it was written in our fates that we would meet again.” Elijah smiled fondly while Mia listened to him intently despite the pain that slashed across her chest.

“We met again, 4 years later and guess what, she turned out be Chloe’s boss!” Elijah then told her in brief details his and Seraphina journey of becoming friends and then ultimately being a couple.
Mia fought hard to keep her emotions in check while she continued to listen to Elijah’s tale. His happiness was palpable, his eyes bright with a joy that pierced Mia’s heart like a poison laced arrow. Mia let him complete his story and when it ended, all she could say in response was, “I am happy for you.” her voice trembling slightly.
What else could she say to the man she loved, when he had someone else in his heart.
“By the way, I am really sorry for forgetting about my promise to you.” Elijah felt guilt claw at his insides for not remembering about the promise that he made to his best friend.
“It’s okay.” Mia smiled despite her pain, “Actually, I came here to inform you that I would not be able to go out with you today. My friend from college is in the city for just one day, so I was thinking to spend the day with her. I hope you understand.”
“Oh, that’s totally fine!” Elijah responded with a grin stretched across his lips, “Enjoy!” he wished unaware of how his revelations had just shattered Mia’s heart to multiple pieces.
