Chapter 55 : [55 – Tangled Emotions]
Back at the Grayson mansion, Elijah could not shake off the feeling of guilt that gnawed at him for not being able to keep the promise he had made to Mia. She was his best friend, the only other person he could share everything with apart from his family and Seraphina.

He recalled how happy Mia had been at the thought of spending a day out with him, she must have something exciting to tell him about but Elijah ended up ruining all of her plans. He was not able to forget the sad smile on her face that he saw before she left to meet up with her college friend.

Wanting to redeem his mistake, Elijah picked up his cell phone and quickly dialed Mia’s number. She did not answer at first and Elijah grew worried thinking that he might have made her too upset so he kept on trying. He called her again, and then a third time. This time, she finally answered the call.

“What is it, Elijah? I was driving so I could not take your call.” she sounded a little upset and angry making Elijah feel guiltier than he already was.

“Hey, Mia.” he began hesitantly, “I just wanted to apologize to you for not being able to keep my promise. I was -”

Mia did not let him finish the sentence and said, “There is no need to apologize again, Elijah. I am not mad at you. We can go out some other day. It’s no big deal!” though she said she was not mad at him but she definitely sounded upset.

Even her voice sounded thick with emotions as if she had been crying. Elijah shook that though off his mind because he could understand Mia being upset but this was not something someone would cry about.

“I understand but I was thinking that you could join me and Seraphina for dinner tonight after spending some quality time with your college friend.” he offered hesitantly, “I mean, the three of us can have dinner together and that way I can introduce Seraphina to you.”

“I am sorry, Elijah, but that isn’t possible for today. I have already committed to my friend, so I have to go.” she replied while trying hard to hold back her tears, “Maybe next time.” she managed to add.

“Okay.” Elijah responded, “That’s fine but you -” he wanted to ask her one more time if she was okay but Mia did not wish to continue this conversation so she made an excuse to end the call.

“Uumm, Elijah, I am driving okay, I have to end the call. We’ll talk later, okay? Bye!” she ended the call without listening to Elijah’s response.

Elijah did not think about it much and decided to talk to Mia later and apologize to her as well. He knew how to pacify her and get her forgiveness. So he quickly placed an order for a massive box of assorted chocolates that he knew Mia loved.

Meanwhile, Mia drove aimlessly through the city, her mind a storm of emotions. She had thought that she could win Elijah over by taking things slow, by giving him the time to realize and accept that she loved him. She had hoped that he would see the love and care she has for him, one day or the other.

But she had not thought that keeping her feelings to herself would result in this. That she would inadvertently end up pushing Elijah in the arms of another woman. Mia had always believed that there was no way Elijah could fall in love with anybody else because he always maintained respectful distance from women and was only comfortable around her.

But she had been wrong.

She had been absofuckinglutely wrong to believe that.

All this while she had been living in this happy bubble hoping that Elijah would notice her some day but reality burst her bubble. It shattered every hope, every dream of hers that involved Elijah. As the wright of her heartbreak pressed down on her, her gaze blurred with tears, Mia could not continue driving like this.

She pulled over to the side of the road and let herself break down. Her petite body shook hard with uncontrollable sobs as the sound of her anguish echoed inside the car.

On the other hand, back at The Seraphina Atelier, Seraphina was preparing for the New Year’s part. She meticulously picked out the best outfits that she had in her collection, that would be perfect for the event.

She placed them on the clothing rack before taking out the jewelry pieces that would go perfectly with the dresses that she had selected. Afterwards, she did the same with her footwear and all the other accessories that she would need to complete the ensemble.

Seraphina wanted to look her best. She wanted to be the most stunning person at the party, not for Elijah, not to impress his parents either. She wanted to stand out because she had her own plans for that evening.

After all, this was supposed to be her grand return in the lives of her enemies so it was a must for her to make her mark and leave an impact on them all. She wanted her appearance to become just as memorable for them as this event is going to be.

Chuckling, Seraphina arranged everything meticulously before trying on each and every outfit to see which one looks the best. The sound of a notification alert on her phone distracted her from her thoughts.

Seraphina unlocked her phone and checked the message that she had just received from Elijah;

What would like to have for dinner? he had asked.

Feeling mischievous in that moment, Seraphina replied to Elijah’s message with just one word, ‘You.’

She smirked knowing what his reaction to this might be. Seraphina believed that Elijah would reply to her message with some kind of corny, flirtatious message but he took her by surprise when he responded with;

‘What are you saying? 😳’ Seraphina frowned in confusion, this was not what she had expected. She could not understand what Elijah wanted to say, so she messaged him back.

‘Do you really not understand what I said?’ she thought that maybe she was not clear enough.

‘I did. I mean, I think I did. But sweetheart, isn’t that too early?’ responded Elijah. Seraphina’s frown deepened in confusion for she had expected a variety of responses but not this.

‘Are you being shy, Mr. Grayson?’ she teased him in hopes that he would say something that she had assumed he would.

‘What? Me, shy? Nah!’ responded Elijah easing the frown marring between her brows.

‘You are.’ Seraphina messaged back, her lips curling upwards slowly.

‘I am not! 😤’ came Elijah’s response. She could imagine the indignant look on his face and could not help but chuckle.

‘You are! Admit it. 😜’ the smile on Seraphina’s face continued to widen, brightening up her mood.

‘I am not okay! I am just being considerate. Also, we just started dating, I want to know you before I get acquainted with your body.’ now that response from Elijah knocked the wind out of her body.

This was not something that Seraphina ever thought that Elijah would say. She had expected a lot of things but not this, definitely not this. This unforeseen response caused Seraphina to freeze up while her heart rate spiked, often skipping a beat or two. She did not ponder it over too much. There was no way she was going to believe anything that he said.

‘Oh, my! ❤️’ was all she could write in response as she wondered if this was how Elijah lured other girls into his trap.
