Chapter 56: [56 – The Fractured Reality – I]
Asher and Caroline were at the Sullivan mansion alone while William was at the office and Victoria had gone out for a lavish get together party. The siblings were the only ones present in the mansion apart from the guards that William had hired as a measure of increasing the security after his last discussion with Marcus and Daniel.
Caroline sat at the polished dining table, her eyes occasionally darting towards the television screen where a romance, drama movie was being played. Asher had chosen this move for both of them to watch while having dinner.
After the events of the past few weeks, a lingering fear had settled inside Caroline. She was still afraid that someone was watching her, that someone was out there who knew her secrets. But she was trying her best to regain her composure. Amidst this mess, it was only Asher who remained by her side.
It was only because of her brother that Caroline could finally step out of her room without fearing the unseen and unknown. Asher’s presence by her side made her feel safe, secure, and protected. It also made Caroline realize how big of mistake she had committed by pushing away Asher.
She trusted all the wrong people and hurt her brother who only wished the best for her. But fortunately, she still had the chance to make up to her brother and strengthen their relationship.
Caroline smiled and tried to focus on the movie while she waited for Asher to finish up cooking their dinner. Though they had a chef that prepared their meals for them but he was on leave and Asher wanted to make the dinner tonight as it was just two of them at home tonight.
Meanwhile, Asher was in the kitchen plating the dinner that he had made. He had chosen to prepare a classic yet luxurious combo for dinner: a perfectly seared filet mignon with a side of buttery lobster tail, accompanied by roasted asparagus and truffle mashed potatoes. The aroma alone spoke of the comfort and indulgence that Asher had prepared for the night.
Once Asher was done plating, he pulled out the bottle of capsules that he had taken out from his safety locker. He took out two capsules from the bottle. With practiced hands, he delicately twisted and opened a capsule and sprinkled its powdery contents onto Caroline’s plate. he did the same with the other capsule and added the powdery substance into her wine.
Mixing it well, Asher plates and glasses on wine on a trolley and rolled it to the dining area, “Dinner is ready!” he announced with a smile on his face, grabbing Caroline’s attention.
Caroline smiled gratefully as Asher placed a plate of food in front of her, putting the glass on wine on the side before taking a seat himself.
“It smells fantastic! Thank you, Ash.” Caroline praised while Asher still at the use of the nickname. It’s been years that someone called him using this nickname. There were only three people who were allowed to call him Ash and Caroline had been one of them.
“Don’t call me that!” he exclaimed jokingly, his lips curved up in a sheepish smile, “You know I hate it.”
“Okay, fine!” responded Caroline and took a pause of few seconds before saying, “Ash!”
Asher made a dace and flicked her forehead but it only made her laugh more. Settling down, the two of them started eating their meal while they watched the movie that Asher had chosen. Caroline’s worries seemed to be soothed by her brother’s presence as she happily enjoyed her meal unaware of the fact that this sense of safety and protection was nothing but an illusion.
From the corner of his eyes, Asher watched Caroline eat the dinner with a smirk on his face that was a reflection of his true intentions.
‘You have been a nightmare for me all my life. now, it’s your turn, dear sister.’ he thought as he waited for the medicine to start showing its affects.
On the other side, when Seraphina arrived home she found Elijah sitting on the bonnet of his car, his arms crossed in front of his chest as he glared at her for arriving late. He looked quite adorable, Seraphina admitted to herself. Perhaps this was a part of his charm that attracted women towards him.
“Why did you come so early?” questioned Elijah as he slid down the car’s bonnet, his arms still crossed in front of his chest, “You should have stayed away the whole night because, why not? I mean, it’s just me, your boyfriend, who had been waiting for you from the past hour and half in hopes of having dinner with my girlfriend.”
“No big deal, right?!” scoffed Elijah but it only made Seraphina laugh harder.
She walked up to him and pinched both of his cheeks lightly, “You are so cute!” she giggled while Elijah tried to avoid making eye contact, the tips of his ears turning pink.
She cradled his face and stood up on her toes to place a kiss on his cheek, “I am sorry.” she apologized, “I tried to leave early but there was too much work to do. I told you before, didn’t I, that this week was going to be extremely hectic for me?”
Elijah relented, his body relaxing under her touch as he bent down and pulled Seraphina in a tight hug. His arms wrapped around her shoulders as he rested his head on her shoulder and took a deep breath, inhaling the unique roses and strawberries scent that surrounded Seraphina.
“I missed you.” he muttered softly and closed his eyes when he felt Seraphina’s arms loop around his waist, hugging him back.
“We have been talking all day, Elijah. And it’s been only -” Elijah did not let Seraphina complete her sentence and added, “I don’t care. I just missed you, don’t argue.” he mumbled as the feeling of contentment washed over his heart, mind, and soul. But the same could not be said about Seraphina.
