Chapter 67: [67 – A New Year, A new Beginning?]
“What?” asked Elijah. He was too focused on Seraphina’s wounds that he did not listen to what Seraphina had just said. It was hard for him to get over the fact that because of his negligence, he could have almost let such brutal thing happen to his Sera.
Elijah believed that it was his fault for letting her out of his sight, for leaving her alone just to talk to an investor. He should have stayed with her or taken her along but he made a mistake and if he had not reached their in time, he would have to live with this regret that he could not save the woman he has been falling in love with.
She was quite readily becoming his everything, the reason for him to live and breathe, and to think that he would have lost that reason tonight. It shook him to the core, shattered his heart to millions of pieces causing it so much pain that it brought tears to his eyes.
Seraphina, who had already been going through a complex range of emotions, could not understand why on seeing tears in Elijah’s eyes caused a pang of pain to slice across her chest, “Why are you crying?” she changed her question, her thumb swiping across the soft skin under his eyes that felt wet to touch because of his tears.
Elijah placed his hand over hers on his cheek, pulling it away to kiss the palm of her hand before placing it back on his cheek, “I could have lost you.” he cried and Seraphina felt that twinge of pain, “I should not have left you like that. I gave them a chance to -”
“Sshh.” Seraphina raised her other hand up to Elijah’s face and placed her fingers on his lips, shushing him, “It is not your fault, not at all.” she cradled his face in her hands seeing more tears roll down his cheek, “Did you tell them to do this?” she asked.
Elijah was quick to respond by shaking his head in negative, “No, I did not! Believe me, Sera, I -” he assumed that Seraphina was doubting him that is why he started to explain himself.
“What did you do when you found out that I was gone?” she asked. Her questions were meant not only to comfort him but she also needed to know what his reaction was on not founding her around.
Elijah felt a tremor vibrate through his body as he recalled the panic that had enveloped him when he failed to find Seraphina after coming back from his brief conversation with the investor. He would never in his life the fear that had gripped his heart instead of relief when he had finally found.
He was searching for her when he heard her screaming, calling for help and hence he had found her trapped and cornered by those bastards with vile intentions.
“I, I was scared.” Elijah could not explain it in words just how scared he had felt in those moments. Tears ran unabashed down his cheeks, “When I heard you scream, it felt as if someone had stabbed me in my heart with a poisonous knife.”
Seraphina’s own eyes watered unknowingly as she continued to hold Elijah’s face in her hands, “Then how is it your fault? you had no part in this. When you found out that I was no there, you rushed to find me and saved me in time, then how could you be at fault.”
“In fact,” she sniffled, “if it had not been for you, I would have -” she could not complete the sentence as Elijah covered her mouth with his hands.
“Nothing would have happened. I wouldn’t have let anything to you.” he just was not trying to comfort her, these words a promise that he had made to himself. Elijah’s voice held such conviction that Seraphina felt it in her soul. It only acted like water to the seed of doubt that had been planted in her mind.
There was so much more to Elijah Grayson than she thought of him to be.
After all the experiences that she had in life, it was easy for Seraphina to recognize what kind of human being the other person is. But Elijah Grayson was proving to be an enigma, a mystery greater than she had thought. So complicated yet so easy to understand. It cemented Seraphina’s resolve to reinvestigate everything and in more depth than before.
“I believe you.” she said, smiling through tears, “I was and I am sure that you would save me in time and you did. So please do not think that it is your fault because it is not.”
Elijah did not say anything. He responded by leaning closer and resting his forehead against Seraphina. Closing his eyes, Elijah took a few deep breaths before finally speaking, “I cannot loose you, Sera. I just can’t.” he whispered.
Seraphina’s eyes fluttered close and she leaned closer, “You won’t. I promise.” in that moment she did not know what was she doing or what she was saying. It was as if Elijah had momentarily put her under a spell, entranced her.
“I am falling, Sera. I am falling hard and it so not in my control.” Elijah confessed. He did not want to scare her with his strong and staunch emotions and feelings. But he could not keep them to himself, not after what happened tonight, “I am not going to force you to reciprocate. I am only asking you for a chance.”
Dazed, Seraphina leaned closer, her nose rubbing against his. This was not something that she had planned, neither was it an impromptu move in her game of revenge. When Seraphina placed her lips on Elijah’s in a simple, close mouthed kiss, the only thought that was in her mind was how natural it felt.
She was lost in the moment, her heart racing as if it were trying to leap out of her chest. It was a fleeting kiss, but it carried all the emotions that words could not express.
When they pulled apart, Elijah’s eyes searched hers, filled with a mixture of hope and vulnerability. “Sera,” he murmured, his voice a soft plea.
Resting her forehead back against his, Seraphina responded with, “I might not be there where you are but I think I will be there soon.”
“Will you wait for me?” she asked to which Elijah responded with a smile that held so much warmth that it seemed to have chased away all the shadows of her past.
In the background, they could hear the loud sound of crackers and cheers, of people yelling, “Happy New Year” but in that moment, nothing else mattered.
