Chapter 69: [69 – The First Crack]
Flanked by four men, Marcus stormed into the Thompson mansion where he knew Daniel was. His eyes, usually sharp and calculating, now burned with a dangerous intensity. He was enraged after knowing what Daniel had done and was appalled by his partner’s audacity to create a scene at his party.
Daniel, who had assumed that he was safe because he had paid those men enough to not reveal his name, was not prepared for Marcus who barged inside his home with his men. Daniel froze and paled slightly on seeing how furious and deadly Marcus looked in that moment.
“Marcus -” Daniel tried to say something but Marcus did not let him as he lunged at Daniel, grabbing him by the collar and slammed him against the wall.
“You thought you could undermine my party and get away with it?” Marcus’s voice was low but venomous, “I don’t care if you have plans for Seraphina or anyone else. What you tried to do was a direct threat to my family name, the Grayson family name. That is a line you do not cross!” he growled, slamming Daniel’s head against the wall.
“I -” Daniel struggled against Marcus’s hold, “I don’t know what you are talking about.” he tried to play innocent but Marcus was not the one to be fooled. Marcus left Daniel’s collar only to grasp him by his neck, choking him.
“You think you are very clever, huh, Daniel? You think that I don’t know about your ambitions?” Marcus said, his voice growing colder, “I know what you are after. But let me make this one thing crystal clear to you; if you ever, every try to bring harm to the Grayson name again. I will make sure you regret it with every breath that you take.”
Daniel tried to push Marcus away but seeing the struggle Marcus’s men came forward and held Daniel back and against the wall by his hands, “I do not care about what you want to do with Seraphina. She means nothing to me except for another pawn that might be profitable to me in the future.”
“But my family has been through enough turmoil recently. After all those scandals and incidents, I don’t want for the Grayson name to make such negative headlines again. You should not have picked tonight’s event for your so called plan, Daniel! Do you understand?” growled Marcus and slammed Daniel’s head against the wall one last time before leaving him.
Daniel slumped down on the floor, his eyes wild with a mix of fear and fury. He knew that Marcus was not someone to be trifled with and that each of his threats were very real. This was not the right time so Daniel chose to keep quiet.
Marcus looked down at him and said, “You are lucky that I am letting you go this time.” bending down to his face level, Marcus continued, “But if you make the same mistake again, I will not hesitate to destroy you, Daniel. Our years of friendship would not be able to hold me back as well. So, mark my words and stay in your limits.”
With that, Marcus turned on his heel and walked out of the Thompson mansion followed by his men while Daniel remained on the floor seething and fuming in anger.
Daniel stood up and dusted his clothes, adrenaline still coursing through his veins while his mind raced with the different ways he could have disposed of Marcus at the moment. But he did not.
“If it weren’t for the 200 billion dollars worth fortune that is in that stupid bitch’s name, I would have severed ties with both you of long ago, Marcus.” Daniel muttered to himself, his voice dripping with venom.
“I might have failed today but that Seraphina will see her end soon. She needs to be eliminated so that my daughter can become a part of the Grayson family. I will do whatever it takes to make sure that Mia becomes Elijah’s wife.” Daniel vowed to himself.

Meanwhile, after treating Seraphina’s wounds, Elijah dropped Seraphina off at her mansion. The night had been too long and filled with tension that despite Seraphina’s reassurances Elijah was reluctant to leave her alone.
He was still haunted by what could have happened to Seraphina if he had not arrived in time. Also, the tender moment that they had shared later on where he had confessed and they had kissed, made it harder for Elijah walk away. He hovered at her residence, concerned and unwilling to leave.
But Seraphina did not want him around because she needed to discuss with Asher and Madison, at the earliest and as soon as possible about her doubts regarding Elijah. He cannot be there, hovering around her like a mother hen when she needed to make sure if he was her enemy or not.
So she tried to send him away, telling him that she was fine but Elijah was just not understanding.
“Are you sure you are okay? I mean, it must be quite a trauma so it is best that I stay here, you know, in case you need something or -” Elijah offered, his voice filled with genuine worry.
Seraphina smiled faintly buts he was getting annoyed now. Only if she could tell him that nothing had happened, that those scratches were self inflicted, she had ripped her dress on her own, and that those four men did not touch her until they heard the loud banging at the door when Elijah had tried to open it.
“I really appreciate it, Elijah, but I am fine.” Seraphina placed her hand on his cheek and continued, Those criminals have been caught and they are in police custody so there is nothing to be afraid of. I am safe now, you saved me, remember.”
“You do not need to stay.” she added with a hopeful smile, hoping that he would understand and leave.
“Are you sure?” asked Elijah.
“I am!” Seraphina responded and began pushing him out of her house, laughing to make sure that her actions looked playful, “And do not worry, I would call you in case I need something, okay?!”
“Promise?” asked Elijah, letting Seraphina push him and did not protest. Perhaps, all she needed was some space to be herself so Elijah did not argue further.
“Promise.” Seraphina smiled and kissed him on the cheek and bid him goodbye before closing the door.
Elijah sighed, leaning against the closed door and smiled. He turned around to leave and it was when he was opening the door to the driver’s seat of his car that he received a message from the investigating officer whom Elijah had told to keep him updated about Seraphina’s case.
