Chapter 71: [71 – Shadows of Uncertainty]
Once Elijah was gone, Seraphina immediately messaged Asher and Madison for an urgent meeting. She needed to discuss her growing doubts about Elijah and her decision to reinvestigate all the cases involving him. She was determined to eradicate the uncertainty that had taken root in her mind because she had vowed to herself never to harm an innocent person on her path to revenge.
Seraphina knew she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if Elijah turned out to be innocent in all this mess. That is why she needed to get her doubts resolved as soon as possible so that she could continue with her plans without being distracted.
Within the next 45 minutes, both Asher and Madison were at Seraphina’s place. It was quite late in the night so Seraphina prepared hot chocolate for the three of them with different toppings. Grabbing their mugs, the three of them sat together in they sat together in the cozy living room.
“I know that it is going to sound a little crazy but over the past few days that I had spent with Elijah, observing him closely, I could not help but start doubting if he truly is what we think that he is like.” Seraphina began, her voice steady but laced with anxiousness.
Asher frowned and leaned forward, Madison mirroring his concern and confusion, “What are you talking about?” questioned Madison.
“I don’t know!” Seraphina confessed. She really did not know from where these doubts started disrupting her plans but after spending the time that she had with Elijah and the way he was behaving around her after tonight’s incident, it confused her and also gave rise to suspicion.
“What do you mean you don’t know?” asked Asher, his voice laced with concern and confusion, “What happened, Sera?”
Seraphina pulled up her legs on the couch and sat crossed legs while taking a sip of her hot chocolate, “Well,” she sighed, “It’s just that something feels off. I cannot put my finger on it, but there is this nagging feeling that Elijah might not be the monster we think he is.”
“Sera -” Madison gave her that weird look as if suggesting that Seraphina was probably getting tricked. It annoyed Seraphina that Madison believed her to be so stupid to fall for some guy’s charms.
“Don’t you dare!” she warned, her tone pointed, “You have been working for Elijah from the past few years, right? Tell me, did you see him doing something illegal or misused his position and power, or misbehaved with you or any other woman?”
Seraphina did not know why she was being so defensive. Was it because of the accusatory way Madison had looked at her or was it because she had actually started to believe that Elijah was innocent.
Asher glanced between the two women, ready to intervene if necessary, “Listen, I get it that anybody from the Grayson, Sullivan, and Thompson family is not trustworthy, at least not for us after all that happened. But what about Ash, and Mia?”
Madison remained quiet and so did Asher but Seraphina continued, “It Ash hadn’t been there, I would have died then you wouldn’t have know what actually happened with my family and I!”
Seraphina knew that she was being too harsh about this but she had to do it to put forth her point and make sure that it is understood, “Mia is also unaware of what her parents are like even when she has been living with them since she was born. But Elijah, he had been living with his grandfather all this while and who knows, he might as well be unaware of what his family is truly like!”
Madison did not want to believe what Seraphina was suggesting but she was right about this one particular point that since she had started working with Elijah closely, there had never been any moment where he misbehaved with her. She had always seen him being a gentleman and so far she had not been able to find any proof that could cement their believes that Elijah was like his father.
Even Asher was left tongue tied. Though he had not spent enough time with Elijah but he still agreed that Seraphina did have a point.
Brows furrowing, Madison took a sip of her hot chocolate and said, “You are saying that you think we might have been wrong about him all this time?”
Seraphina sighed, willing herself to relax, “Yes.” she responded, “I know that after all that we have been through it is really difficult to believe this but I need to be sure before we take any further steps. I do not want to hurt him only to find out later that he had been innocent all along.”
Asher set his mug down on the table, confusion evident in his eyes, “What about all those evidences that we had gathered. There’s been proofs that -”
“Innocent until proven guilty.” Madison commented, interrupting Asher. She was beginning to realize that they might have made a mistake. Though she was not sure but she could deny the possibility of it, “And in every case that he had been involved in, Elijah was let go not because there weren’t enough proofs to prosecute him, punish him.”
“But that does not mean -” this time Seraphina interrupted Asher and said, “I am not saying that it’s all wrong. If he was suspected to be the main culprit in all these case there must be a reason behind it.”
“But what if there’s another layer to all off this that we missed or perhaps we are not seeing?” she questioned.
Sighing, Madison asked, “So what do you want us to do?”
“Let’s reinvestigate everything. Go through all the cases involving Elijah, looking for anything that might indicate that we have been misled and that Elijah is innocent, or a concrete proof to condemn him.” suggested Seraphina.
Asher and Madison looked at each other before shifting their gaze to Seraphina, “Fine! Let’s do this!” exclaimed Madison.
“It’s better to clear the doubts sooner than later.” Asher leaned back on the sofa chair and closed his eyes, “But you know that it would change nothing right?”
“What do you mean?” asked Seraphina.
“Even if Elijah is found to be innocent, he might not be your enemy any longer but you, you are still going to be his enemy, perhaps for forever?” commented Asher looking directly into Seraphina’s eyes.
