Chapter 74: [74 – The Black Sheep]
A few seconds of silence later, Asher was the one to say, “I will gather all the information that we already have and see if we missed something. We might be able to spot a missing link or an inconsistency in those records.”
Madison and Seraphina nodded in positive, “We did not investigate deeply about Davis, believing firmly that she was a victim and was forced to recant her statement against Elijah. It could be that she was not forced to recant her statement, but was forced to give her initial statement.”
“Which could very well mean that at first she was working for the person who tried to and is still trying to trap and hurt Elijah. But then, for whatever reason, Emma must have changed sides and revealed the truth to the police?” Asher added but he was not quite sure about his statement. He still did not fully believe that Elijah was innocent but he was for sure going to give that man a benefit of doubt.
“And then, because Emma changed sides the mastermind killed her and put that blame on Elijah because obviously people would believe that Elijah killed her after he was done with her and when she was of no use to him.” added Seraphina, an indescribable feeling gripped her heart, clawing at her insides violently.
“Now that I think about it, all the other cases have been like this as well. They sprung out of nowhere, all together and at once as if someone was trying too hard to take Elijah down.” commented Madison, she could not believe that they never thought about this before. They were so consumed by their hatred that they did not check too deeply.
Elijah was the last person they checked into after searching through everybody else’s past and finding about their present. It was perhaps their hatred for his family and the people around him that they believed that Elijah was one among them.
What were the chances that he could be any different from all of his family members?
Asher agreed with Madison and truthfully, it was not a good feeling. The knowledge that Elijah could be innocent, an odd one out, an anomaly in this whole mess, did not bring them any relief. In fact, it only complicated things.
Because if Elijah wasn’t a criminal like the rest of his family, then it increased the chances of something developing between him and Seraphina. Asher had already seen how Elijah behaved around her, and though at first it made him skeptical and wary of Elijah’s advances towards Seraphina; his innocence would change everything.
It would validate Elijah’s feelings for Seraphina, and it would be his feelings for her that would complicate things. Elijah’s feelings for Seraphina would act like a double edged sword that would end up hurting both of them and causing a hinderance in their plans.
“Do you think that this Blake Anderson could be the mastermind behind this? And just why the surname Anderson seem -” Seraphina paused mid sentence, her eyes widening to the size of saucers as she must have realized something that they all had previously missed.
“Sera? What is it?” questioned Madison, her voice a mix of concern and uncertainty, and tone reflecting the horror that was slowly consuming Asher as well.
“Evelyn!” Seraphina yelled out the name, her eyes wild, and breathing shallow, “Evelyn Jones.”
“Holy shit!” Asher quickly stood up and grabbed his clothes. He needed to leave and gather every information that he could grab about Elijah’s cases, Blake Anderson and his involvement in this mess, and about Evelyn Jones – Blake’s younger sister, his cousin to be precise.
“If this is what I think it is then we need to hurry!’ he exclaimed while putting on his shoes, “Elijah might truly be the innocent one, the black sheep in this family of sinners.”
This piece of information also shocked both Madison and Seraphina to the core. They could not believe that they had overlooked such an important link during their investigation. Perhaps they were also not free from bias and judgement as they believed themselves to be.
While Asher left, Madison and Seraphina continued communicating through the video call, “If what Asher implied is true, Sera, then Elijah is in grave danger. Blake was never caught and we have no information about him. So he might still be onto something.”
“What makes you say that?” Seraphina’s heart thudded painfully, “What is it, Maddy?” she asked.
“Well, when we were in London, there been cases, I mean situations where Elijah had gotten hurt. He also got into a serious accident but -” Madison could not complete her sentence as Seraphina intervened.
“Why did you not tell me about it? Were you hurt?” she asked Madison. Seraphina could not believe that Madison would hide such information from her.
“I did not think much about it because everything seemed so accidental but now that we are on this trail, I think those were not accidents, after all!” replied Madison, she was cursing herself for not seeing this before.
But what could she do, what could they do when they were so deeply involved in their revenge that they did not think about anything else.
“I am so sorry, Sera. I did not want to hide anything from you.” explained Madison, “I wasn’t hurt in any of those incidents, but Elijah was and I really thought that all of them were plain accidents and nothing else.”
Seraphina’s heart grew heavy as the implications of what all this meant finally registered in her brain.
“It’s alright!” she said reassuringly but did not sound like it, “I do not blame you because I did not think about it as well. None of us did.” she was filled with deep regret that was clawing at her painfully, “I do not know what to do!” she cried.
“We will fix everything, Sera! Believe me we will.” said Madison. Seraphina did not how to respond to any of this. She cut the call without saying anything.
