Chapter 81: [81 – Cracks in the Facade]
After having a hearty dinner, Elijah went back to the guestroom to freshen up and have a relaxing shower before going to bed while Seraphina cleaned the dishes in the kitchen. As Elijah did not have spare clothes to wear so he picked up his cell phone to call back home and get someone deliver his clothes to Seraphina’s place.
As Elijah unlocked his cell phone, he noticed the multiple missed calls from the same police officer that he had been in contact with for Seraphina’s case. Lines of worry creased his forehead as he wondered what must have been so urgent and important that the officer called him so many times.
He was about to call him back but stopped when noticed that the officer had sent him a message. Elijah dreaded opening it but did so nonetheless. The message that he had received caused panic to flood into his veins and fear to grip his heart in its painfully tight, poisonous hold.
I just wanted to inform you that Mr. Daniel Thompson has been released from the jail and is freed of all the allegations that were reported against him.
The feelings of anger and fear twisted inside him causing his heart to pound in his chest. Elijah immediately called the police officer to ask him about how did Daniel managed to walk free. He was reminded of all that Daniel had said to him at that time when he had gone to confront him.
Elijah felt a chill ran down his spine, his panic rising to an all new level with every passing second that he had to wait for the officer to answer the call. After what felt like an eternity, the officer answered the call, “Hello, Mr. Grayson?”
“Officer, I apologize for not answering your calls earlier, I was busy with something else. But I just read your message and I am unable to understand as to how did Daniel Thompson managed to be freed of all the charges against him. Weren’t you the one who told me, assured me that you guys had enough proofs to prosecute that man and have him live the rest of his life in jail, then how?”
Elijah’s voice grew louder and louder with each sentence that he spoke, “Then how is that possible that that criminal managed to escape the law and is now free to commit more such crimes? Will your law not take any action until and unless something really serious happens?”
“Mr. Grayson -” the officer tried to say something but Elijah was in no mood to listen. Angrily, he slammed his fist against the wall and continued, “Is this how law enforcements work now, officer?” he spoke through gritted teeth, “Answer me, damnit!” he shouted in such loud voice that even Seraphina could hear it from the kitchen.
Worried, she rushed to check on Elijah and found him standing there, talking on phone while slamming his fist into the wall again and again.
She had an inkling that it could be about Daniel. Seraphina also knew that Daniel was not going to stay in jail for long and would be freed within few hours. Neither he was going to stay idle and get punished nor Marcus and William were going to let him stay there because those two were afraid that Daniel would open up all their secrets about their illegal business and every crime that they had committed so far.
Her doubt was confirmed when she head Elijah yell again, “Tell me, how did Daniel Thompson managed to get out?”
Seraphina stepped behind and hid on the side, eavesdropping on the conversation. Though she was almost certain that Elijah was innocent but the fear of betrayal still did not let her completely accept the fact. She had witnessed with her own eyes how her father had been betrayed by those whom he treated like his brothers.
And after that horrible death that her father suffered at the hands of his so called brothers and partners, Seraphina had no plan on trusting anybody blindly. She was no going to make the same mistake that her father did.
No matter what how nice Elijah was, Seraphina could never trust him completely. Of course, his presence now felt very calming and she often smiled genuine smiles in his presence but that is a completely separate thing and she cannot base her trust just on that fact alone.
Perhaps one day she would be able to trust him completely but maybe by then he would no longer trust her. Shaking off her thoughts, Seraphina focused on listening to Elijah’s conversation with whomsoever he was on phone with.
Meanwhile, Elijah was facing another harsh truth as after listening to him yell and complaint about the law enforcements, the police officer that he had been talking to could not reign in his anger and snapped, “Mind your language, Mr. Grayson. I am not someone you can talk to in this tone.”
“Instead of questioning me, you should question your father!” the officer spoke angrily, “We did not let him leave, your father, Mr. Marcus Grayson sent the country’s top most criminal lawyer for Mr. Daniel Thompson. The lawyer who was sent by your father made the criminal walk out of jail and us to drop all the charges against him.”
“What?” Elijah could not believe that it was his father who was behind Daniel getting released from jail and not face any punishment, “What are you saying?”
“I am speaking the truth, Mr. Elijah Grayson. Your father is responsible for this so go question him instead.” and with that the officer ended the call.
The phone fell down from Elijah’s hands and landed on the floor with a sharp thud. Elijah could not believe what he had just heard. His father, his own father, the man whom he respected and loved so much, the man whom he knew never tolerated any crime against anybody, that man was responsible for freeing that criminal who had made such a disgusting plan against Seraphina.
Elijah stumbled and fell down on the floor, his face reflecting the disbelief that he was feeling at the moment. His heart cracked painfully at the thought of Marcus helping Daniel, the man who planned to not only have Seraphina gang raped but also murder her.
‘How could his father do this?’ he questioned to himself but could not find any answer.
Tears clouded his vision as various negative thoughts consumed his mind. Tremors shook his body, not just of disbelief and sadness but also because of anger. The revelation about his father’s involvement in the case evoked and provoked a raging fire inside him causing his blood to boil.
He needed answers.
Right now.
Elijah wiped the tears away and stood up, consumed by the urge to get answers to all the questions that were swirling inside his mind. He wanted to know just why his father helped Daniel out. Was it because Daniel was his old friend and business partner, or did Marcus was hiding something as well.
He picked up his belongings and began wearing his shoes. This was the time when Seraphina left her hiding spot and entered the guestroom, “Elijah?” she acted as if she did not know about anything.
“Are you going somewhere?” she asked making Elijah to look up at her, his eyes rimmed red and face a mask of fury.
When Elijah did not respond and continued to tie his shoe laces, Seraphina stepped forward and placed her hand on his shoulder, “Is everything alright?” she asked even when she knew that from now on things for Elijah were never going to be alright.

Elijah exhaled deeply, willing himself to relax as he placed his hand over Seraphina, pulled it away from his shoulder and grabbed it between both of his hands, “Something really important and urgent came up, Sera. I need to go and attend to this matter.”
He forced a smile on his face but Seraphina could easily detect how fake it was. This also made her realize the difference between how Elijah looked when he smiled genuinely and when his smile was forced and fake.
“Oh, so we have already onto that stage in our relationship where you had begun lying to me?” Seraphina pouted and crossed her arms in front of her chest as she looked at Elijah with complaining eyes.
Elijah shook his head, he smile turning a bit sad as he replied, “I am not lying, Sera. I really have to attend to this matter. It’s about a very important deal that I am working on. Some complications came up and I need answers about that. So I have to go.”
Though he tried to not let his true feelings show but Elijah could not hide his pain from Seraphina who had a deep relationship with that feeling. There was no one else who understood this pain any better.
Taking a seat beside him, Seraphina laid her head on his shoulder and said, “Okay fine, go. I am not going to stop you but -”
“But?” asked Elijah as he rested his head against Seraphina, “But will you please come back here tonight? I want you to be here with me, you make me feel safe.” she replied softly but this was not the truth.
The reason that Seraphina wanted him around her was because of the new variable in this equation of revenge. The man named Blake Anderson who was after Elijah.
