Chapter 84: [84 – Unraveling Secrets – III]
Elijah stood up and dusted his clothes before walking back to the spot where he had parked his car. Unlocking it, he opened the door to the backseat where he had kept his cell phone and other belongings. Picking up his cell phone, he closed the door and dialed Mia’s number.
She did not answer the first time, so he tried again, and then again. Elijah kept continuously calling her despite her not answering any of the 15 calls that he made. He called her again for the last time, deciding to go see her in person if she did not answer again.
The events of the previous night kept on replaying in his mind like a relentless nightmare. He could not waste any more time in finding out if what his father said was true or not. He heaved a sigh of relief when the call got connected this time, but it was not Mia’s voice that greeted him.
“Hello?” Amelia, Mia’s mother’s voice was cold, each syllable dripping with barely contained disdain.
Elijah felt slight fear slash across his chest along wondering why was Amelia answering Mia’s phone, “Uh, hello Amelia. It’s Elijah, I need to talk to Mia.” he said, trying his best to keep his voice steady.
He heard her sigh before she informed him, “Mia is unavailable at the moment so you cannot talk to her now.” her voice was firm and curt as she continued, “And honestly, Elijah, please stay away from my daughter.”
“What?” Why?” Elijah could feel his fears turning into reality, “Listen, I really need to talk to her. It is important, I -” Elijah insisted, frustration seeping into his tone. He tried to explain his reasons behind needing to talk to Mia but Amelia was not ready to listen to any of it.
“Important?” Amelia scoffed, interrupted Elijah mid sentence, “I do not care how important this is for you. It would not matter even if it is life threatening! I do not want you to be in my daughter’s life!” Amelia yelled at him, making fear grip Elijah’s heart in a tight hold.
He could feel the panic rising at Amelia’s resistance and tried to explain things to her again but Amelia was not ready to listen to anything, “You listen to me, Elijah Grayson! You have caused enough trouble in my daughter’s life. She does not need any more from you. Just leave her alone!”
“Amelia, please.” Elijah pleaded, “I promise I would not trouble her again, I just need to make a few things clear. I promise, I would not trouble her after that, just tell me where she is.”
He did not receive any response from Amelia for a few seconds. He heard a sharp exhale of breath before Amelia revealed to him, “Elijah, Mia is in the hospital. She had a panic attack last night and hurt herself.” she informed in a soft voice, tinged with reluctance and concern.
Elijah’s heart plummeted into his stomach, “What? Which hospital?” was all that he could managed to ask. So, what his father told him yesterday was true? Elijah still hoped for a no in answer.
Amelia sighed but still informed Elijah about Mia’s whereabouts, “St. Mary’s. Room number 2305” she responded curtly and without any other word, she ended the call.
Elijah did not waste any time and immediately sat inside the car, on the driver’s seat. He drove straight to the St. Mary Hospital, crossing the speed limits and breaking almost all of the traffic rules. This was a matter of life and death and in this case, rules did not matter.
As Elijah dove towards the hospital, his mind felt like a whirl of conflicting emotions and memories of the previous night’s confrontation with his father, Marcus.

Elijah had stormed into the Grayson mansion, his face a thundercloud of anger and determination. Anger simmering just beneath his skin, he was not going to leave this place until he gets the answers that he came looking for. He found Marcus in his study, pacing like a caged animal.
“Why did you help Daniel after knowing what he did?” Elijah demanded, slamming his hand on the desk, his voice echoing off the walls.
Marcus’s expression was stern but calm, his eyes hard, “Have you lost your manner, Elijah?”
“Don’t bring manners into this, Dad. How do you expect me to react after knowing what Daniel had done with Seraphina. Do you not know that he was the one who sent those men after Seraphina and what he had told them to do to her?” Elijah’s voice grew louder and louder, reflecting his pain and anger at the situation.
Marcus let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose, his voice calm yet it had a cold tinge to it as he replied, “Not everything is black and white, Elijah. Reality is all about -”
“I am not here for a lecture on human psychology. I need answers!” Elijah exclaimed, slamming both of his hands on the desk, staring directly into Marcus’s eyes.
“I am answering, Elijah! You just do not have the patience to listen.” Marcus growled in anger, glaring back at his son, “Daniel did what he thought was justifiable for what his daughter did because of you, Elijah! He was swayed by his love for her.”
“What are you trying to say? Stop talking in riddles!” Elijah fumed, his nostrils flaring in anger.
Marcus sighed, willing himself to calm down as he tried to explain the whole situation to Elijah, “I am not sure if you know or not but Mia is in love with you, Elijah.”
“What?” that was not what he was expecting.
“Yes. Mia is in love with you but when she saw you and Seraphina together, she could not handle it. She could not bear seeing you and Seraphina together and so much in love so she tried to commit suicide but was saved by Daniel in time.” Marcus explained.
“What? What the hell are you saying? There is no way that -” Elijah could not believe that his best friend was in love with him. He never felt anything from her.
“It is true, Elijah.” Marcus’s voice broke slightly, clearly pained by Mia’s condition, “Daniel could not see his daughter in so much pain and sadness. This is why he made a stupid decision, swayed by his love for his daughter.”
Elijah fumbled slightly but, “That does not justify his crimes! Do you know that he planned on having Seraphina gang raped and the killed as well?” questioned Elijah.

Marcus stared at his son, his gaze unwavering, “Firstly, I know that what Daniel did cannot be justified. Secondly, he only told those men to just scare Seraphina, those bastards acted on their own and they lied to the police. It was because their statements were proven incorrect later on, this is why it was easy for us to get Daniel out of the jail. Do you think that if those statements and confessions were true, would the police have released Daniel like that?”
Elijah shook his head, disbelief etched on his face. He plopped down on a chair, unable to believe any of what Marcus had just revealed to him, “I cannot believe this.” he exclaimed.
Marcus remained adamant, his voice steady and stern, “It is the truth, Elijah, Whether you believe it or not.”

Elijah reached the hospital, and hastily parked his car in the first available spot in the parking lot. His mind was still reeling from the revelations from the confrontation with Marcus. He rushed up to the VIP floor where the receptionist confirmed that Mia’s room was.
He found Amelia standing outside the room, talking to someone on the phone, her face drawn with worry as she spotted him.
Elijah ran up to her, “Amelia,” he called out her name, breathless from his sprint, “What happened? Where is Mia?”
Amelia looked up at him, her eyes red-rimmed from crying, “After finding out what Daniel did for her and his arrest, Mia had a panic attack. I was so lost in my own misery that I did not notice my daughter’s suffering. It was only when I heard a loud thud noise that I turned and saw her lying down on the floor, bleeding and unconscious.”
“She had hurt her forehead pretty bad, and she still had not gained consciousness. I don’t know what to do.” cried Amelia.
Elijah’s heart ached with guilt and sorrow, “Is she okay?” he questioned.
Amelia nodded in positive and said, “She’s stable now, but Elijah, after her attempt at suicide, the doctor’s said that she lacks the will to live so perhaps she might not wake up.” Amelia admitted, shedding tears, her voice heavy with sorrow.
“Perhaps this is her punishment for falling in love with you.” Amelia covered her face with her hands and burst into loud sobs.
Elijah felt a wave of guilt wash over him, his knees nearly buckling under the weight of it, “I never wanted to hurt her. I didn’t know.” he muttered to himself.
Amelia’s expression softened slightly, seeing the genuine remorse on his face, “I know, Elijah. But intentions don’t always matter, do they? The damage is done. Now only the God can save my child.”
