Chapter 85: [85 – Lies and Deception]
With a heavy, guilt laden heart, Elijah walked into Mia’s hospital room, his heart breaking at the sigh of her unconscious form. She had bandage wrapped around her forehead. Tears welled up in his eyes as he approach her bedside.
Elijah could not help but feel partially responsible for Mia’s state. How could he not realize that she had feelings for him? How could he not think of her when he claims that she is his best friend.
“I am so sorry, Mia.” he whispered, his voice breaking as he felt choked up with emotions, “I did not know.” he pulled the stool and sat on it, taking Mia’s hand in his.
“I really did not know about your feelings for me, I swear I never meant for any of this to happen.” even though he knew that Mia would not be able to hear him but still Elijah wanted to apologize for unintentionally breaking her heart.
“I know that I have hurt you but you know right that it was not my intention to do so.” he really wished that she did, “I really did not know. You should have told me, Mia, we could have talked about this and -” Elijah stopped mid sentence because he knew that even if they had talked about it, even if Mia had confessed, nothing would have changed.
He did not love her and could not ever because in his eyes she was his best friend, at most she was like a younger sister to him but never more than that.
He sat there for a few moments, saying nothing else, overwhelmed with guilt and sorrow. Spending a few minutes in silence, he placed Mia’s hand back on the bed and said, “Just get well soon, okay. We will talk about this later.”
That was all he said before quietly leaving the room, with tears in his eyes. He walked down the sterile, brightly lit corridor, feeling a hollow ache in his chest.
As he exited the hospital, he found himself replaying the conversation with Marcus in his mind. The disbelief, the anger, the confusion. How could things have gone so wrong? Elijah could not believe about how in a few days his life had become such a mess.

After Elijah left, Amelia entered the room, her eyes softening as she looked at her unconscious daughter. She looked worried and concerned for her daughter. Amelia brushed a strand of hair from Mia’s face and sat down beside her, on the stool that Elijah had sat on earlier.
She held Mia’s hand in hers and said, “Everything is going to be okay, Mia.” she whispered, her voice breaking, “But darling, you cannot be with Elijah. I cannot let that happen.”
Amelia looked guilty as she squeezed an unconscious’s Mia’s hand lightly, “I cannot tell you or anybody else about this, can’t let this truth to be revealed. So, honey, you have to just understand and accept, alright?”
“I know that you would.” she kissed the back of Mia’s hand and continued, “I promise to find a very suitable match for you. But that cannot be Elijah. I know my sweet child would understand that.” she caressed Mia’s bandaged forehead with a smile on her face but the guilty of keeping such a secret was eating her up from the inside.
Amelia let out a sigh, her mind drifting to the conversation that she had with Marcus last night. She was sleeping when Marcus had called her to inform her that Daniel would be coming back home the next day. But that was not the only thing he had wanted to say.
“Listen, you know that Elijah knows nothing about the truth. He is oblivious to our works and he should remain that way. Which is why when he came to confront me about why I helped Daniel out, I had to lie to him.” Marcus explained, she could hear the strain in his voice.
“What is it, Marcus? What did you say to him?” asked Amelia, sitting up on the bed.
“You need to lie to Elijah about Mia,” Marcus had said in a firm voice, “he needs to believe that she tried commit suicide.”
“What?” Amelia had yelled, “Why would I do that? Amelia did not -”
“I know that she did nothing of sorts.” said Marcus, completing Amelia’s sentence, “But you have to lie to Elijah about this for him to believe that what Daniel did was just because he could not see his daughter being so depressed. I have told Elijah that Daniel stopped Amelia before she could do anything so there is no reason to actually get her hurt or something to prove it.”
“He needs to believe she tried to commit suicide. For his own good and Mia’s.” explained Marcus much to Amelia’s disbelief.
Amelia had remained silent for a minute, feeling incredulous, “You want me to lie about something so serious? Why? Considering how Elijah is, this lie would make him feel guilty and what would we do if -” she did not dare complete that sentence.
“Do you think I would let that happen? You don’t have to fear about anything Amelia. Just do as I said and I will handle the rest.” Marcus had replied.
Amelia had reluctantly agreed to do so. While she was in her room talking to Marcus, she did not notice that Mia had hurt herself after she got to know about Daniel being in jail and the reasons for his arrest. She did have a panic attack and ended up hurting her forehead but she did not try to commit suicide.
In fact, the wound on her forehead was not that deep, and Mia was only unconscious because of the affect of medicines. Amelie had lied about the doctors telling her that Mia have lost the will to live.
But now, the lie weighed heavily on her heart. The burden of this deception gnawed at her as she watched over her daughter, hoping for a brighter future amidst the chaos. She hoped that the God would not punish Mia for the mistakes that her parents did, for the crimes that her father committed.

Elijah wandered at the hospital grounds. He still had not left. He just could not leave, not before knowing that Mia was safe and was conscious. The turbulent storm within him would only rest after knowing the Mia was out of danger.
He chose to sit in the hospital garden, remembering the times he and Mia had shared their laughter, their dreams, their bond. She was quite young when he left, their friendship grew in time whenever he used to come visit home for a few days, and they become the best of friends when he finally came to live with his family a few years ago.
Seeing her in that condition, pained his heart so much that it brought tears to his eyes. Elijah sat there, alone, and in guilt for hours without moving. It was not until he received a call from Seraphina that he finally came out of his thoughts.

“Hello, Elijah?” he could hear the panic and worry in her voice, “Where are you? You said that you would come in the afternoon but it late evening now. I am worried for you, sweetie.”
His heart fluttered at the endearment, and a small smile curved upon his lips, “It’s alright if you cannot come. Just tell me are you alright or is there some problem?” she asked, her voice kind and sweet, just like her.
Elijah sighed deeply, air whooshing out of his body causing his shoulders to slump as his heart ached. How could he explain any of this to her? How could he face her after learning the truth about why she had been targeted?
“Elijah? Please tell me what is it? I feel like you are hurting.” Seraphina’s voice was so soft that it brought tears to his eyes. He could not hide anything from her but he feared she would dislike him after knowing the truth.
Taking a deep breath, he wiped away the tears that had rolled down his cheeks and managed to speak, “I’m at the hospital.”
“What? Why? Did something happen? Are you hurt? Where are you?” Elijah heard some other noises as well that he could not pin point but in the moment he did not care. All that mattered was Seraphina and she was talking to him, concerned for him.
“I am fine.” Elijah told her gently, “It’s not me, Sera, do not worry!”
“Then why are you at the hospital?” she asked, a lot calmer than before.
“Actually, Mia had an accident. When I got to know about it I came to meet her here. She has not gained consciousness yet, so I am worried that -” he could not complete his sentence without breaking down into sobs.
“Eli -” he was in so much pain that he did not notice that Seraphina had called him by a nickname, “Just tell me where you are.”
“St. Mary’s.” Elijah managed to say through tears as guilt of being the reason for both Mia and Seraphina’s problems clawed at him.
“Just stay where you are right now. I will be there soon, okay. Just wait for a while.” she told him and he followed.
